Reflections of Pain

1086 Words
The candlelight flickers against the tall mirror in my suite. I stand before it, wrapped loosely in my robe, staring at the reflection that feels both familiar and strange. My fingers trace the line along my ribs, over the faint scars that mar my skin. Memories rise unbidden. These scars… they were given to me by Damian’s brother, Alexander Blackwood. His rage, his cruelty—it left marks I carry every day. And yet, tonight, the mansion feels colder, darker, as though those marks are being watched. I take a deep breath, trying to steady myself. The bracelet from the garden glints faintly on the dresser. Someone is still out there. Someone is watching. I begin to change into a simpler gown for dinner, moving slowly, aware of every sound in the quiet mansion. Then I hear it—a soft creak from the hallway. My heart hammers. Someone is there. I freeze, ears straining. The sound comes again, closer this time. Panic rises, sharp and unrelenting. My instincts scream at me to run, but curiosity pushes me forward. I slip silently through the suite, toward the source of the noise. A shadow flickers past the doorway. I follow, heart pounding. The figure is quick, deliberate, almost inhuman. Before I can get closer, a hand clamps over my mouth, spinning me around. “Ah!” I scream silently, trying to push away. The figure is tall, strong, and masked, dressed entirely in black. My pulse races. I struggle, kicking, flailing—but they are too strong. “Shh… quiet,” the masked figure hisses, gripping me tighter. The masked figure tightens his grip, his breath cold against my ear. “You should not be with him,” he whispers, voice low, distorted. “You don’t know what he is. What he’s capable of. Leave him… before it’s too late.” My stomach twists. Terror mixes with confusion. “W‑Who are you?” I try to speak through his hand, trembling violently. He chuckles darkly. “You don’t need to know who I am. Just know this—Damian won’t save you. He never will.” His fingers slide along my arm, rough, warning, threatening. Something snaps inside me. I open my mouth and bite his forearm as hard as I can. He hisses in pain. “You little—” I scream—this time loud enough for the whole mansion to hear. “DAMIAN!” Before the masked man can silence me again, footsteps thunder down the corridor like a storm breaking. Then— Damian appears. Not calm. Not controlled. But furious. His jaw is clenched, eyes blazing with a deadly fire I have never seen before. “Get your hands off her.” The masked man shoves me aside and Damian lunges. Their bodies collide violently. A fist slams into the intruder’s jaw. Another blow meets Damian’s ribs—but he doesn’t even flinch. He fights like a man possessed. The stranger swings a knife—Damian dodges, grabs the attacker’s wrist, twists it with brutal precision until the mask man screams. The knife clatters to the floor. “You think you can come into my house?” Damian growls, slamming the man against the wall so hard the plaster cracks. “You think you can touch what’s mine?” The intruder kicks Damian back just enough to break free. He stumbles, then rushes toward the window. Damian dives to grab him, fingers brushing the man’s clothes— But the masked stranger slips away, crashing through the window, rolling onto the garden path, and disappearing into the darkness. I stand frozen, shaking, breath shallow. Damian turns to me immediately. “Elena,” he breathes, rushing forward. His hands cradle my face, his fingers trembling. “Are you hurt? Did he touch you? Are you bleeding? Tell me.” His voice—rough, desperate—pulls tears to my eyes. “I—I’m fine. He didn’t—Damian, I…” My robe slips slightly. That’s when he sees them. The scars. His entire expression changes. The fury melts. Something raw replaces it—pain, guilt, something deeper. Slowly, gently, he reaches out and touches one scar with the back of his fingers. Almost like he’s afraid it will burn him. “Elena…” His voice breaks. “Who did this to you?” I swallow hard. “Alexander.” Damian freezes. I continue, voice trembling. “He… he always doubted me. Even when I did nothing. He was always suspicious, always angry. One night—he said I lied to him. But I didn’t. He didn’t care. He just—he just wanted to hurt someone. And I was there.” Damian’s jaw clenches so hard I hear his teeth grind. “He hurt you…” he whispers, more to himself than to me. “My brother touched you… like this?” I nod slowly. A tear—an actual tear—slides from the corner of his eye, but he quickly blinks it away. “Elena,” he says, voice low and shaking, “if I had known… I would have destroyed him.” His fingers trace the scars again, soft, reverent. His touch almost feels like an apology. I breathe shakily. “Damian… why do you care?” His gaze snaps to mine—intense, molten, impossible to look away from. “Because,” he whispers, stepping closer, “you’re mine.” My breath catches. His hand slides to the back of my neck, pulling me gently—not forcing, not demanding, but slowly—toward him. His forehead brushes mine. For a moment, everything stops. Then his lips touch mine. Soft at first. Testing. Almost unsure. But when I don’t pull away, his kiss deepens—slow, desperate, protective… possessive. His hand moves to my waist, fingers tracing the scars like he’s memorizing them, promising something wordless. I lean into him, my heart racing. The kiss is warm and terrifying all at once. When he finally pulls away, his breath is uneven. “You’re safe with me,” he murmurs. “No one will touch you again.” But behind him—through the broken window— I see movement. A silhouette. A presence. Watching. Still watching. A cold shiver runs down my spine. The masked man is gone… But the feeling remains. Someone is out there. Someone who doesn’t want me with Damian. Someone who knows more than they should. And they’re not finished with me. Not yet.
