.Chapter 11 — The Night of the Fire “He was there that night.” The realization hit Amara so hard she could barely breathe. The underground room suddenly felt smaller. Colder. Too quiet. Her eyes locked onto Lucian. Waiting. Demanding. “What is he talking about?” she whispered again. Lucian didn’t answer immediately. Outside the metal door, her father remained silent now. Listening. Waiting. Like he already knew the damage had already been done. Lucian slowly lowered the gun. Not because the danger was gone. Because something else had become more dangerous. The truth. His jaw tightened before he finally spoke. “I carried you out of the fire.” The words hit her like a physical blow. Amara stared at him. “What?” “You were bleeding,” Lucian said quietly. “The house was collapsing. I got you out before the second explosion.” Her pulse became uneven. “You were there.” “Yes.” “You knew me before all this?” “Yes.” Every answer cracked something open beneath her feet. Amara shook her head. “No… that doesn’t make sense.” “It doesn’t have to,” Lucian replied darkly. Anger flared instantly. “Stop deciding what I can handle!” The words echoed sharply through the room. Lucian went still. Then softer— “I’m trying to keep you alive.” “That’s all you ever say.” “Because it’s all that matters.” “No,” she snapped. “It matters to you.” Silence. Heavy silence. Because she was right. Lucian looked away first, dragging a hand across his jaw in frustration. Outside the room, her father laughed quietly. “There it is.” Lucian’s expression hardened instantly. “Shut up.” “You can threaten me later,” her father replied calmly. “Right now she deserves the truth.” Amara looked back at Lucian. “You’ve been lying to me since the beginning.” “Yes.” The honesty hurt worse than excuses. Her chest tightened painfully. “Why?” Lucian finally met her eyes again. And something in his expression shifted. Not cold. Not distant. Raw. “Because the second you remembered me,” he said quietly, “everything would change.” Her heartbeat stumbled. “Remembered you?” “You knew me before the fire.” The room fell silent. “No.” “Yes.” “That’s impossible.” Lucian stepped closer slowly. “You were seventeen.” Something flickered in her mind instantly. Rain. Dark eyes. A voice she couldn’t fully hear. Amara pressed a hand against her temple sharply. Lucian noticed immediately. “Amara.” The sound of her name in his voice felt different now. Careful. Almost afraid. “You remember something?” “I—” Another flash hit her. Music. A black car. A pair of hands catching hers before she slipped. Amara inhaled sharply. Lucian moved toward her instantly. “Easy.” His hand touched her waist gently. And suddenly another memory slammed into her. A younger version of Lucian standing beneath city lights while she laughed at something he said. The memory disappeared as quickly as it came. But it was enough. Amara looked at him in shock. “You knew me.” Lucian’s jaw tightened. “Yes.” Outside the door, her father spoke quietly. “He was never supposed to meet you.” Lucian’s expression darkened instantly. “You should leave.” “But he did,” her father continued. “And that’s where everything started going wrong.” Amara looked between them desperately. “What happened?” Lucian stepped back again, distance returning. “You don’t need the full story tonight.” “I’m tired of you deciding that!” Her voice cracked this time. Emotion slipping through. Lucian’s eyes softened briefly. And somehow that made everything worse. Because even now— Even after the lies— Part of her still reacted to him. Still felt safer when he was close. “You said I knew you,” she whispered. “How?” Lucian hesitated. Then finally— “You saved my life once.” Silence. Amara blinked. “What?” “You found me after a deal went wrong.” Another flicker crossed her memory. Blood. Rain. A man collapsed beside an alley wall. Dark eyes watching her through pain. Her breath caught sharply. Lucian noticed immediately. “You remember.” “I don’t know.” But she did. Not fully. Enough. Pieces. The strange familiarity she had felt since meeting him suddenly made horrifying sense. Her father’s voice lowered outside the room. “You became attached.” Lucian’s expression turned lethal. “That’s enough.” “No,” her father replied calmly. “Tell her.” Amara’s pulse raced. “Tell me what?” Lucian looked at her for a long moment. Then— “I kept seeing you after that night.” Her heartbeat stopped. “What?” “You weren’t supposed to matter,” he admitted quietly. “But you did.” The confession settled heavily between them. Real. Dangerously real. Amara stared at him. And suddenly every strange feeling between them made sense. The tension. The familiarity. The awareness she could never explain. They had known each other before. Before the fire. Before everything broke apart. “Did I know what you were?” Lucian gave a faint humorless smile. “You knew I was dangerous.” Another memory flickered. A younger version of herself standing too close to him while he warned her to stay away. And ignoring him anyway. Her stomach twisted. “Why can’t I remember properly?” Neither man answered. That silence terrified her. “What happened to me?” Her father finally spoke. “The fire wasn’t an accident.” Cold spread through her chest. “No.” “You were targeted.” Lucian closed his eyes briefly, like he already knew where this conversation was heading. Amara’s pulse quickened. “What do you mean?” “We’re done talking about this tonight,” Lucian said sharply. “You don’t control this anymore.” His eyes darkened instantly. “No,” he said quietly. “You do.” The words hit harder than they should have. Because despite everything— He meant them. Lucian stepped closer again. Too close. The tension between them thickened instantly. “You want the truth?” he asked softly. “Yes.” “The people hunting you now started hunting you long before the fire.” Amara’s breathing became uneven. “Why?” Lucian hesitated. “Because of your family.” Outside the room, her father laughed quietly. “That’s one way to simplify it.” Amara noticed the warning that crossed Lucian’s face. “There’s more.” Silence. Then finally— “Yes.” Frustration exploded through her. “Stop protecting me from information!” “I’m protecting you from what happens after.” The intensity in his voice froze her. Because suddenly— He didn’t sound afraid for himself. He sounded afraid for her. Lucian stepped even closer. Close enough that she could feel his warmth. “You remember pieces of me,” he said quietly. Amara swallowed hard. “Yes.” His gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. “And that’s dangerous.” Her breath caught. “Why?” Lucian’s expression darkened. “Because once you remember everything…” He paused. Then softer— “You won’t look at me the same way.” The words hurt unexpectedly. Outside the room, her father spoke again. “She already is.” Silence crashed through the room. Amara’s heart pounded violently. Because her father was right. She was looking at Lucian differently now. Not just fear. Not just distrust. Something warmer. Something dangerous. And judging by the way Lucian stared at her— He saw it too. A loud explosion suddenly shook the tunnel outside. Dust fell from the ceiling. Voices shouted in the distance. The enemies had found them again. Lucian reacted instantly, grabbing his gun. “We move now.” Her father spoke sharply from outside. “They’re closing both exits.” Lucian cursed under his breath. “How do we get out?” Amara asked. Silence. Then her father answered quietly— “There’s one way left.” Something about his tone made Amara’s stomach tighten. Lucian noticed too. His expression darkened instantly. “No.” “You don’t have another option.” Amara looked between them. “What aren’t you saying?” Lucian ignored the question completely. Instead he moved toward her quickly, gripping her shoulders firmly. His eyes locked onto hers. “Whatever happens next, stay beside me.” The intensity in his voice made her heartbeat stumble. “Lucian—” “Promise me.” The words came out rougher this time. More emotional. More real. Amara nodded slowly. “Okay.” Lucian stared at her for one long second, like he wanted to say something else. Instead, his hand lifted slowly to her face. Gentle. Careful. His thumb brushed lightly across her cheek. Heat rushed through her instantly. Both of them felt it. The air changed immediately. Thicker. More intimate. Amara’s breathing slowed. Lucian’s gaze dropped briefly to her mouth again. And this time— He didn’t look away immediately. The tension between them became unbearable. One step closer and— A loud bang slammed against the metal door. Reality crashed back instantly. Lucian pulled away sharply. “Stay behind me.” Another bang shook the door harder. Metal groaned loudly. “They’re here,” her father warned. Lucian raised his gun immediately. The third hit nearly tore the door off its hinges. Voices echoed outside. Armed men. Too many. The metal door burst open. Gunfire exploded instantly. Lucian fired first. Precise. Deadly. One man dropped immediately. Another followed. Chaos swallowed the room. Her father’s men returned fire from the opposite side of the corridor. Lucian grabbed Amara’s hand hard. “Run!” They moved through smoke and gunfire while bullets shattered the walls around them. Amara’s heart slammed wildly against her chest. Lucian never let go of her hand. Not once. They reached the far tunnel just as another explosion ripped through the corridor behind them. The blast knocked Amara off balance. Lucian caught her instantly, pulling her tightly against him. Their bodies collided hard. And for one breathless second— Everything stopped again. The noise. The chaos. The world. Lucian’s face hovered inches from hers. Dark eyes locked onto hers completely. Amara’s breathing faltered. His hand tightened against her waist. Then— Lucian whispered something that shattered whatever control remained between them. “I tried to stay away from you.” Her breath caught instantly. Because he sounded like a man confessing a sin. Then gunfire erupted again behind them. And Lucian pulled her deeper into the darkness.
