I paid for our breakfast, and thanked Charlie before we left. I dropped the twins to school, then headed to the gym.
Leg day. My favourite. I decided to warm up, and get some steps in on the treadmill, and give myself some time to think.
Rory and I had both been born into wealthy families, and had both planned out our own careers before life threw us a series of curve balls. We had met on my 19th birthday, at a bodybuilding competition. I had set my sights high, to train and compete at an international level. Rory was 24, and had just finished his law degree. His plan was to compete, and travel, and had only gone to university to placate his father, who was a renowned medical malpractice lawyer, and wanted his only son to follow in his footsteps.
It was about three months after we met, that Rory found a lump in his groin. A whirlwind of testing followed, and after two weeks Rory was diagnosed with stage II testicular cancer. I remember sitting next to him, and holding his hand so tightly as they broke the news to us.
They explained that the treatment could permanently impact his fertility, and that we would need to make decisions about starting a family immediately. I left the ball entirely in Rory’s court, and told him that I would support him in whatever he needed. He chose to freeze his sperm, and asked if I would be willing to go through IVF, so that we could freeze an embryo.
My thoughts moved to the day I was due to start injections. I received a frantic phone call from my obstetrician. I assumed that he was just going to tell me I was at the wrong point in my cycle, but he was calling with completely different news!
“Piper, Don’t start the injections! I’ll need to see you this week, your blood tests are showing that you are pregnant.” That couldn’t be right, Rory and I had only met months earlier. Hundreds of images of us f*****g flashed through my mind, I thought I knew my cycle well enough to avoid this… apparently not.
From that moment onwards, our life was a whirlwind. Rory was lucky enough to make a full recovery with surgery, and a short period of chemo. He got the all clear when I was about 20 weeks into my pregnancy. I was doing my best to manage his care, and grow my babies, and continue training to the best of my abilities.
The second his treatment was finished, his libido bounced back tenfold. I was lucky to have a relatively small belly, considering I was 5 foot 2, and having twins! I think he made up for 4 months of abstinence in the 8 weeks we had before the twins arrived.
He was a good man, a kind man. It was only fair that he struggles with his feelings sometimes, he does so much for us. And god, the s*x was still great after all this time.
I thought back to the night before, when he picked me up and threw me on the bed. He would always take his time, kissing and caressing every part of my body, making sure I knew he thought I was the most beautiful creature on earth. I was grateful for the extra soundproofing we put in our bedroom, I didn’t have to hold back when we had s*x. Maybe it was because he was away so often for work that we had never lost that spark, or maybe it was because I was 26 and still had a high s*x drive.
I was deep in thought about my husband railing me when a familiar voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I just about jumped out of my skin I was so surprised.
“Leg day today?” Said Rory with a huge smile on his face “Why aren’t you at work?!” I exclaimed - I know he has been working on a huge case, preparing for a deposition to a children’s hospital. “I left early, I could t stand the idea of getting wrapped up in what I was doing and missing Ella’s recital again.”
I bit my lip, desire coursing through my veins. He was listening to me last night. “God it’s hot when you talk shared parental responsibility to me” I said with a hint of sarcasm in my voice. He leant over a little and dropped his voice so nobody overheard us “from the look on your face you think it’s very, very hot when I talk parental responsibility to you. You want to go to the stretching area and finish warming up?”
I looked around, and saw the young receptionist was flirting with the only personal trainer out on the gym floor. We wouldn’t be missed. “Sure, let me grab my foam roller from the change room, want to come with me?”
He hit the pause button on my treadmill, and followed me toward the change room. It had a communal space for bags, and individual locker rooms for changing and showering. I grabbed my bag, and nodded my head toward one of the locked rooms. He gladly lead the way, and locked the door behind us with a smirk on his face.
