Chapter Eight

401 Words
For the first time in a long while, Mina felt like she could breathe. BECE was still important. She still studied. She still revised. She still wanted to do well. But the fear was different now. Before, she had worried about what would happen if her results weren’t enough. Now, she knew she had a place waiting for her. The scholarship had given her something she hadn’t had in a long time. Security. A reminder that her future wasn’t completely uncertain. When the final exams ended, Mina said goodbye to Junior High School. She looked around the school that had held so many memories. The girl who had entered JHS afraid of being recognized was leaving as someone different. Not completely confident. Not completely healed. But different. She had made friends. She had survived moments she thought she couldn’t. And she had achieved something she never imagined. Two weeks later, a new chapter began. The international school was unlike anything Mina had known before. The classrooms were different. The resources were better. Everything felt bigger. Even the food surprised her. It was a place full of opportunities. But there was one thing that didn’t change. Starting over was still hard. On her first day, Mina walked into her new classroom and looked around. There were only a few students. Four people. That was all. The class was small enough that everyone noticed everyone. At her old school, Mina could disappear into a crowd. Here, there was nowhere to hide. She quietly took her seat and listened as the others introduced themselves. They seemed friendly. They seemed comfortable. But Mina still felt that familiar hesitation. How do you start a conversation with someone you’ve never met? How do you become friends with people who already seem confident? The same questions followed her into this new chapter. A new school. A new environment. A new opportunity. But the same Mina. Then, months later, the BECE results were released. Mina checked her results with a nervous heart. She already had a scholarship. But she still wanted to know how she had performed. When she saw the grades, she smiled. Eight 1s out of nine subjects. She had done it. The girl who once doubted herself had achieved something incredible. But Mina didn’t know that this was only the beginning. Because success could open doors… But it couldn’t teach her how to walk through them.
