You and Your Brother

252 Words
You are an eight-year-old and you are enjoying a picnic with your maturing older brother. It’s just an average day. Suddenly, in the middle of the meal, he announces, “Welp, it’s time”. Your bro walks around to find a “good spot” and rips out of his skin to reveal somewhat of a fleshy sphere surrounding him. He starts shaping the odd lump, writhing around and moving various parts with his hands and mouth. Over the next few days, the lump that is your brother becomes transparent, allowing you to see everything. He spits everywhere and slowly turns to goo, with only a few solid parts remaining. All you do is to watch with a mixture of fascination and horror. Then about two weeks later, he busts out, looking new, improved, and more mature. You stare at the majestic man in front of you and say, “Brother? WHAT WAS THAT? Do you remember what just happened?”. “You mean when I made a cocooon, digested myself and turned into goo, and popped out better than before? Yeah.” You scream for you know you’re next. While it’s not so much as an ability as growing up, when caterpillars go into their cocoons, they spit enzymes on their body, breaking themselves down. Only a few key parts remain solid. From there, they form their butterfly bodies. The worst part? Afterwards, the poor creatures remember turning themselves into goop.
