Ayla's POV Someone echoed. “Welcome, ma'am.” The same maid from the other day, stood at the entrance of a door, a smile on her countenance. “Welcome to The Pack Varondale. The guards will handle your luggage. Come with me.” What about the Alpha? I thought. Shouldn't he be here to take me with him? Maybe announce to the other members of the Pack that I was his Surrogate mother? Well, why did I care? We had seen each other twice in one week. The first time was when he offered a contract and the second time was when the papers were signed. Life was not good. This wasn't my plan for myself. “Are you okay, ma'am?” “Yes. Yes. Thank you.” It was a long walk, into the living room, past the living room and even a large kitchen. The largest I would ever see. Then myself and the woman walked right into a hallway, one filled with many artworks on the wall—with many fine stones made into art that hung on certain walls. “My name is Margaret.” Just what I wanted to ask. “Margaret. Thank you. For assisting me to my room.” We stopped at the door of a room, a beautiful one at that. For the first time since my arrival, I smiled. “This is your room, ma'am.” With my own hand, I pushed the door open. Glancing around, I stepped in. “Thank you.” I looked at Margaret who bowed. The door made a creaky sound and when I looked, there were two men with my boxes, pushing through. “Thank you, gentlemen but I'd like to be alone. You must give me some time.” As they walked away, my eyes had tears in them. I wished this phase of my life was a dream, but it wasn't. The other day, I checked Caleb's social media and he was there, as usual, with a woman, another woman who wasn't me. How didn't I know he was this way? Why did it take so long to realize? While I was thinking, the door flung open, and a man I recognized walked in, his countenance undefined. “Are you comfortable?” “My Lord.” I wiped my face. “Yes. Thank you.” “Wipe your tears—” he turned and headed out. Then he stopped and turned to look at me. “I'm not shocked. You're a weak Omega wolf.” It was obvious he hated me more than anything. Maybe not, and I still didn't care. I hated him too. All I cared about was being paid monthly as agreed, and of course, by the time the child would come, I would be gone from his sight. His life. His pack. Life may, or may not become good. But I would be more than rich, able to afford anything at all. Relieved, I relaxed on the large bed. The next time I opened my eyes, it was late in the evening. I sat up, looked around, and got up. What was I supposed to do next? Take a bath. I caught up with the closet, discovering also the need to arrange my clothes in the closet. I would be here for a long time, eight months and even more, depending on when the child would come out. “Ma'am?” Someone knocked on the door. “Yes? Come on.” I didn't lock the door, after all. When the door pushed open, Margaret walked in. “What would you like to have for dinner?” I thought about it. I hadn't felt hungry since I stepped into the Pack. Or maybe I was but was too overwhelmed to think of it. “I don't know. Anything is fine.” “I'm afraid you cannot ask for just anything.” “Wh—what do you mean?” “Alpha Lukas has asked me to watch after you. While you're in the pack, I shall be your maid. He's also asked that you be specific with what you want to eat. This way, we can keep track and record of your meals, and know how the baby is doing.” Oh. I thought it was me he cared about. It was the baby he wanted, after all. “I—I don't know what I would love to have. What is available?” “Head of the maids made soup a while ago.” “Soup is good for me then. I'll have soup.” The door opened and shut a while later. While Margaret was busy getting my meal, I got busy in the bathroom, washing myself for the night. In the tub where I lay, I thought about a lot. Especially how to walk in front of the wolves of this Pack. I didn't know anyone here, although I didn't know a lot of people, except for Caleb who now was my ex. It was a weird feeling, moving into a pack, with a man who wasn't my husband or boyfriend. “Ma'am? Your meal has been served.” “Thank you!” I snapped out of my thoughts. “Thank you and have a good night.” “That's not all.” It seemed like she was standing close to the bathroom door because of how her voice echoed. “The Alpha wants you to join him and the council members at the table tomorrow.” “Table?” “Yes, my lady. The dining hall.” “I—” I yanked the towel off the hangar. “One moment—” I was wrapping it around me and reaching the door the next moment. “What am I supposed to do there with the council members?” “I don't know, my lady. I'm sure the Alpha wants to introduce you to them and them to you.” It made sense now, but did I want it? Was it even in my place to refuse? “Okay. Thank you. Will you take me there?” “Yes, yes. I'm your maid. The Alpha says but you can choose to have another if I don't meet up with your needs. Just talk to him about it.” “Thank you, Margaret. That should be all.” She bowed and walked to the door. “There's a guard at your door. If you need something, just snap your fingers and he'll show up. Is there something you need me to assist you with?” “Thank you again, Margaret.” Alone, I became. Many more thoughts raced in my head, I wondered what the conversation would be. Even though at some point, I wanted him to introduce me to the wolves and members of the Pack and now that I think of it, I wasn't sure if I wanted it again. I would love to be alone. By myself. Think about my life and draft a plan for when all of these would come to an end. The next morning came and I was the first to come awake. To test what Margaret talked about, I snapped my fingers at such an early hour in the morning. To my surprise, the door pushed open and a guard stepped in. “Good morning, my lady.” “Good morning.” He walked further into the room. “What can I offer you? Would you like some water?” An option, indeed. That wasn't why I called, but he could do it. “Yes. A bottle of water, please. Thank you.” In a very short while, the day broke. I was ready—more than ready for what would happen. That was what I thought until the door opened and Margaret stepped in. “Good morning.” “Good morning, Margaret.” “Did you sleep well?” I jumped off the bed and gave her a nod. “I came to remind you.” “Remind me?” I made my bed and looked her way. “I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean. Do you want to explain to me?” “A date with the Alpha at the dining hall.” Oh, s**t.
