12 Jean awoke to the sound of someone shouting, “Make camp here! Make camp here!” She looked around and found she had fallen asleep at the back of the cook’s wagon; they had been on the move. She couldn’t remember packing up and breaking camp and she was wondering where they were when she heard her friend, Meg the head cook, say, “I hope they don’t expect us to cook for this multitude.” Jean turned around to see Meg sitting with the driver. She climbed over the pots, pans and all the other stuff that filled the wagon to see what Meg meant by ‘multitude’. “Oh my God, look at that lot!” she exclaimed when she saw them. There were tents filling the three fields with campfires lit all around. Jean had never seen so many people, even when she was in the last camp. This one had to be twice
