After officially joining up, Jean’s excitement only increased. She and Joe had registered as Mr. and Mrs. Bateman – a foot soldier and wife – and Jean’s duty was simply to assist the cook in dispensing her own duties. Jean and Steve-e-Joe did everything ‘Uncle Johnny,’ asked. She called him Uncle Johnny in front of everyone they met and he later confirmed to them that they’d be staying in his tent, due to the shortage of tents.
Jean and Steve were shown around the campsite during a detailed orientation exercise but soon it was night time and they both walked over to the tent they were to share with Sergeant Brown. They met him engaged in an argument with Sergeant Morris.
