Mark Olson smiled proudly when he saw his girlfriend, Gwen Hughes, on the stage receiving an award for being chosen as the campus queen. Mark waved several times, but this time, Gwen's attitude was different; she looked at Mark coldly, not returning his greeting at all. Indeed, their relationship was not known to many people; only Gwen's close friends knew because Gwen often cried when she saw Mark being ostracized when he was close to her. However, based on her promise, Gwen wanted to announce their relationship if she were elected campus queen to prove her love for Mark, who had sacrificed much for her.
Mark couldn't wait to hear the announcement. His hopes were getting bigger, even though he had to listen to some sneers that pierced his ears.
“Why was this trash allowed into the building? He should be in the restroom cleaning department. How he lived on a scholarship on campus his whole life makes me sick, and now he dares to attend this event. Oh, how shameless!"
"Yep, the name of this campus is tarnished because of his presence. I don't want to be in the same frame with him, or it will be a joke for the rest of my life."
Mark chose to remain silent; he had been used to it since the first year he came to this campus, when he received a lot of insults and ridicule. His days were filled with humiliation just because he entered Crownford University, which contained the children of prominent people or famous influencers.
Mark refocused on Gwen, and she started to give her short speech, the victory speech.
"I thank everyone who supported me, my closest friends, my mom and dad, and Gerald Thomson, who has always been faithful by my side, accompanying me in joy and sorrow. I love you, Gerald."
Mark's heart cracked; he didn't expect Gwen to say that, the person he had been fighting for the past three years. Mark, who made assignments for her, obeyed all her wishes and worked extra hours to buy the things Gwen wanted. The time, energy, and trust he gave her became a joke.
Mark stepped forward and approached the stairs to the stage, not accepting that he was not recognized. Gwen's friends, who always got a share every time Mark gave money or goods to Gwen, also looked down on him—ignoring him, even looking at him with a mocking gaze.
Gerald came closer, nudging Mark's body so hard that Mark fell to the floor.
Mark watched his lover embrace another man intimately. Gerald's hands hugged Gwen's waist. They kissed on the stage, looking intimate and passionate.
Mark clenched his fists, exited the floor, and climbed the stairs. He swatted Gerald's hand away and punched him.
"Don't touch Gwen!"
"You're the one who can't touch me, Mark! You're not a friend or anyone to me!" Gwen's voice made Mark's body instantly stop moving.
Mark looked at Gwen questioningly, "What do you mean? You've been my girlfriend for three years now! Why are you acting like we're not even close?"
Gerald and everyone laughed. Gerald grabbed Mark by the collar. "You're a loser who can't have your dreams. Should Gwen Hughes date a useless person like you? Gwen would lose her mind if that happened. Now get out of here before I destroy you!”
Mark fought back. "You're the one who influenced Gwen. You're the one who threatened her to say this. Leave her alone!"
"No one threatened me! Gerald is the one who supported me in taking many personality classes and also additional classes to support my success in this event. So don't embarrass yourself!”
Mark shook his head. "You must be under pressure, right? Gwen, you must know, he's not a loyal man. He slept with many girls. He's setting a trap for you, don't fall for that jerk!"
Slap!
Gwen slapped Mark's right cheek hard.
"Stop it! How dare you insult my boyfriend!”
Everyone exclaimed, treating him as a 'loser’. Mark gritted his teeth. He looked at Gwen, who was mocking him.
Gerald approached him and squeezed the collar of Mark's shirt so tightly that Mark lifted slightly, his feet on tiptoe to keep his footing.
"You are a scumbag! You tarnished the name of the college! Get out of here and never interfere with my relationship with Gwen, or you will regret it!" Gerald pushed Mark to the ground.
Mark's head hit the floor. Dizziness came over his head. His vision was blurry, but he tried to stay strong. Slowly, Mark got up and wanted to return to the stage, but Gerald called his friends, Jovan and Kyle, two big men who looked like bodyguards, to Gerald.
They dragged Mark out of the venue. No one dared to go against the decision of Gerald Woods, the son of the richest billionaire in Stone City, who poured a lot of money into this campus. His words could not be denied, even if it meant sacrificing someone.
Gerald, Gwen, and everyone there followed Mark, who was dragged away.
Outside, Mark was beaten so much that he was bleeding from his mouth. He had to lie face down to protect his front body. Kicks and punches continued to land relentlessly until Gwen's voice stopped everything.
"Leave him alone. That's enough, Gerald. You don't need to sacrifice your good reputation on this campus to fight a poor guy like him. Let's go inside and continue the party."
Gwen wrapped her hand around Gerald's arm tightly because Gerald wanted to punch Mark again, who was still trying to get up despite being covered in blood.
Mark continued to stare at them. He could only clench his fists to hold back all the anger that came so quickly.
He had always tried his best to make Gwen smile happily. He even ate only a piece of bread for dinner to save up and buy a ring for Gwen. The ring was still in his pocket. His heart ached, and Gwen's ever-present smile was fake.
Kyle and Jovan stopped as Gerald raised his hand to signal them.
Gerald crouched down and looked at Mark, who was staring at him sharply. "All right, this is Gwen's request. You are still alive, Mark. You should know, you could have died today, but I'm still thinking about my girlfriend. Don't you use her kindness for your crazy desires!"
Gerald pushed Mark's head with his forefinger using considerable force. Mark fell on his back again. This time, he couldn't get up.
He could only look at the taunts and curses from everyone, then stare at the night sky without stars. Even nature rejected him.
Because he was poor, luck seemed to mock and humiliate him.
Mark gasped for air, his body shaking without being able to get up again. The pain radiated from his toes to his head. His eyes began to blur. His breathing was labored, like he was going to die. Just as his mind was about to sink into despair, a cold, mechanical sound echoed in his head.
