The last time she sleepwalked, Scott’s dad was the one to find Stiles. But this time, no one is looking for her, because it’s the dead of night and as far as all her friends know, she’s still tucked up in bed. And Melissa is out on a sleepover date, so not even she knows of her “guest’s” late night walkabout.
Except – not that she has the conscious functions to realise – Stiles isn’t alone now. There are two following her, one leading and unseen to the other (or to any other that isn’t her), while the other follows carefully at a watchful distance as not to crowd her.
And while Stiles is unconscious, the nogitsune doesn’t even give the wolf a second glance. The nogitsune only sees Stiles right now, and the wolf would not be a threat to him, even if they did see one another.
He leads to her to nemeton, and she goes beautifully, no questions asked. That is, until she’s finally standing before it with her hand half raised above it.
“Can’t... I can’t...”
“Yes, you can.” The nogitsune tells her.
Derek scowls as he watches her closed eyes screw even tighter shut and her head shaking furiously as she trembles slightly.
He keeps back for the moment, doesn’t know whether to try to wake her or not. He really wants to, because he can feel how terrified she is, but he also knows how disorientated he could make her, how much worse he could make things altogether. He simply continues to watch her.
“You’re the only one strong enough.” The nogitsune tries to sweet talk her.
“I won’t.” Stiles grits out, and Derek feels her anger – is proud because he feels her resistance.
The nogitsune scoffs, almost sounds annoyed, but seems to cover it with amusement. “You will.” He tells her, more promising than threatening, “Or I will just keep killing until I am free again.”
Stiles shivers, recoils from the voice.
Derek takes a step forward when he hears her whimpers, but stops himself from taking any more.
The nogitsune sighs, relents only very slightly as he tells her, “It’s just one little spell to set me free now, and I promise, I will spare your beloved pack...”
Stiles almost believes him, almost f*****g agrees to help him... again! But no, the anger she suddenly feels with herself is enough for her to finally wake up.
Derek is frozen in both awe and a little fear when Stiles’ eyes snap open, and instead of seeing those lovely amber eyes of hers, he sees her eyes glowing brightly with the palest blue light. He takes another step forward, stops when he sense she’s in no danger, instead, feels the raw power emanating from her entire body.
“No.” Stiles grits out, glaring at her own pale face as Void Stiles glares back at her from across the nematon. She keeps her eyes on his, narrows them in defiance as she slowly lifts both her hands over the tree stump.
“Don’t!” The nogitsune snarls angrily, eyes widening for a split second.
Stiles notices, smirks dangerously at him.
As Derek’s own eyes burn golden, he uses the sight of his wolf half to see the glowing pale blue aura around Stiles’ form. Like a moth to flame, he feels drawn, simply can’t look away at the beauty of it; at the beauty of her. She really is, he thinks, the most perfect creature he’s ever laid eyes on.
“You’re done with your chaos, bitch.” Stiles tells him before she’s placing both her open palms down onto the nematon.
Derek’s blazing eyes widen as her aura brightens along with the flames now engulfing the rest of the nematon tree. He almost has to look away, feels his own eyes burning at the brightness, but he doesn’t care and doesn’t look away, because he’ll just heal later anyway... and that power he feels from her... he’s never felt anything like it. He could happily drown in the feeling.
Stiles watches the nematon quickly disintegrating into nothing but black ash, smiles triumphantly to herself as she watches that ash sail off into the cool night’s breeze.
However, her smile drops instantly when she looks up to see the nogitsune still standing there, still wearing her face, and now, grinning gleefully from ear to ear.
“What the f**k?” Stiles mumbles, heart feeling like it’s slowly sinking down into her stomach as her brain tries to tell her that she’s f****d up before she’s even realised it.
Derek’s eyes return to normal as he watches Stiles’ own eyes do the same, sees those lovely amber eyes now staring in horror in front of her. “Stiles?” He finally walks up to her, is slow and careful in his movements, doesn’t want to startle her.
“Chaos is never done. You’re a smart cookie, Stiles, but did you forget that I’m still a trickster?” Void Stiles taunts, slowly walks up to Stiles, stares right at her, their identical heights levelling their almost identical eyes – the nogitsune’s being a little... darker.
“You should never trust a single word a trickster says. And the best part about all of this? If you had just continued to ignore me, eventually, I would have withered away forever.” Void Stiles grins as Stiles starts to hyperventilate. “You think about that...”
Stiles watches the nogitsune’s form shimmering out existence, disappearing out of thin air, but is still left with the lingering words of, “...while I’m brutally murdering all of your friends...”
“No... NO! f**k!”
“Stiles?”
“Holy mother of God!” Stiles jumps about three foot in the air when a large hand is placed on her shoulder. She swirls around, eyes wide until they land on the familiar face, her hands clasped over her mouth at her outburst. She narrows her eyes when she sees the corner of his pretty lips twitch briefly upwards. She pulls her hands down to hiss at him. “Where the hell did you come from?!”
“I saw everything, Stiles.” Derek tells her, points to where the nematon stump once stood, not but a few moments ago.
“I’m sorry.” Stiles whispers, bottom lip trembling and eyes brimming before she can even begin to stop it. “I know how sacred it was, but I couldn’t...” She grits her teeth and lets out an angry snarl – and Derek is forced to internally scold himself for finding that noise arousing, only succeeds because of how upset she suddenly is. “It doesn’t even matter, because I was wrong.”
Derek’s heart aches when she stares miserably up at him. “What’re you talking about? The nematon isn’t the only one of its kind.” He adds the last part in hopes of making her feel better. She smiles slightly, but it doesn’t reach her lovely eyes and clearly doesn’t seem to work by the way she answers him.
“Yeah, thanks, but even if that did make things better, it still doesn’t matter, because I set him set. I... I f*****g f****d up!”
“Stop that.” Derek gently grabs her wrists when she lifts both hands to tug a little too hard on those wonderful long thick locks of hers. He holds her wrists in his hands, tells her to, “Look at me.” He fights back a smile when she does just that, almost instantly, instead, simply tells her to, “Breath.”
Stiles takes slow and deep breaths, slowly starts to feel her jittery limbs calming some, along with her mind.
“I’ll take you home.” Derek tells her when she’s finally relaxed enough.
###
Derek doesn’t know if he would have truly left her on her own if she hadn’t of invited him in for a beer while they go over their next move – while they try to figure out the nogitsune’s next move. Derek probably would have shifted into his full wolf form and lingered outside... but like, in a protecting the pack kind of way... totally not in a creepy sort of way... no matter how creepy it still feels to him.
“Melissa working?” Derek asks, smiles to himself when Stiles laughs and shakes her head as she sips at her second beer.
“Actually, she’s on a date. She’s trying the dating app thing.” Stiles shakes her head, but is serious as she leans forward – and Derek has to hold his breath to not so blatantly breath in her almost intoxicating scent – and with a devilish grin, tells him, “I totally may have put a secret location tracking spell on her... and maybe also a spell to tell me if she’s afraid at any point...”
Derek chuckles. “You know she will kill you if she finds out?”
“Well, she’s not gonna find out.” Stiles snootily states, eyes then narrowing at him as she asks, “Is she?”
Derek smirks, but holds up a hand and crosses his fingers. “To the grave.”
“Good boy.” Stiles grins happily before downing the rest of her beer and rising to fetch another.
Derek has to take a moment to breathe after hearing those words come out of her mouth... hearing them directed at him... He really is pathetic, no matter how much his twitching c**k disagrees.
“Pop it for me?”
“I – what...??” Derek clears his throat when he glances up to see her holding out a beer bottle to him.
Thankfully for him, he’s a werewolf, and a pretty skilled one at that, so he has no trouble forcing the flushing of his cheeks back down to hell where it belongs. He truly marvels at how easily this woman has always reduced him to a ridiculous mess of a man without her ever even noticing.
Stiles arches a brow, looks slightly confused for a second, then, motions to the bottle in her hand. “The cap.” She elaborates simply.
“Oh. Right.” Derek nods, lifts a hand, wraps it around the neck of the bottle and pops the metal cap off with a simple flick of his thumb.
Stiles chuckles as she watches it go flying, watches him easily catch it in his other hand. “That will never not be awesome. You and Kira are the best at it.” She grins when he rolls his eyes, sees him trying not to smile.
She plonks back down on the couch beside him, and Derek is silently grateful to her for not bringing up his odd (pathetic) behaviour. “Your eyes –“ He tells her, can’t help looking slightly impressed. “Are you aware they can glow? And I’m not talking like any other supernatural I’ve ever seen. They were glowing like you had a damn star inside your head.”
“Oh, yeah.” Stiles waves a hand, casually explains, “That only happens when I’m in, uh... I dunno ‘full mode’, shall we say?” She shrugs, but looks thoughtful as she says, “Whenever I use magic, it feels like I’m tapping into something more than just magic itself.”
Derek shakes his head with a grin. “How are you so knowledgeable about everything else, but not about what you are?”
Stiles doesn’t know whether to feel insulted or not as she scowls back at him. “You don’t think I did my research?” She scoffs, snootily tells him, “I did the research and there is absolutely next to nothing known about stupid sparks.”
“You could have asked me.” Derek smirks when she glares at him, sees the slow realisation in her lovely amber eyes.
“I... did not think of that.” Stiles gives him a thoughtful look this time. “You do always seem to know a lot about supernatural beasties.” She huffs, hisses, “God damn it, it’s been almost 10 years and I could’ve –“ She takes a deep breath to calm herself. “Y’know what? Whatever. I’m over it.”
Derek snorts quietly, holds his hands up surrender when she shoots him another pretty glare.
“There are three different kinds of sparks. In order of power from lowest to highest? The orange flame first, then, the white flame, and then, most powerful of all, the blue flame. ” He begins to tell her, heart panging fondly as those large doll like eyes stare back at him in wonder and waiting. “The word ‘spark’ is just a slang term for you. Really, you are ‘The Flames of Life.’” He smirks when she chuckles, because he knows how ridiculous that sounds. “It’s not the magic of witchcraft connecting you to the earth’s energy, instead, you tap into the force of the universe itself. That’s what you’re feeling when you said you can feel the magic itself, it’s where all magic originated from, just like everything else.”
“But... I’m a blue flame then...??” Stiles doesn’t know if she likes the sound of that or not. “I’m not sure I’m comfortable being more powerful than just setting stuff on fire and doing shitty little locator spells...”
Derek wonders if he’s told her too much too soon, even when he knows she can more than handle the truth, now that he knows she’s been looking for it for so long. He hopes he hasn’t fricking scarred her as he takes in her slightly wary look.
“Do I, like, need to practice with my powers more so that I don’t end up hurting anyone? ...again?”
Derek shakes his head, smiles, because – “That’s what you’re worried about? I’m really gonna have to give Deacon a piece of my mind.” He chuckles at her adorably confused look, tells her, “You don’t have to worry about anything like that. Witchcraft comes at a price. Flame or spark energy is shared. Think of it like... I dunno, Venom and Eddie’s relationship?”
Stiles sputters for a moment, eyes wide as she stares at him for another moment before calmly asking, “Venom and Eddie, as in Venom the Symbiote and Eddie Brock from Marvel comics?”
Derek stares back at her in slight confusion, but nods and simply replies with, “Yeah.”
Stiles’ mouth drops open, her eyes widening in excitement. Seriously, how the f**k has she just fallen even more in love with this man – this man wolf – ugh! “Oh, my God. You read Venom comic books?! You read Marvel comic books?! You read comic books?!”
Derek stares back at her, trying with all his might to bite back an amused smirk. Still, he’s slightly insulted. So, when she’s done roasting his age again, he scoffs and tells her, again, “I’m only 6 years older than you. And I have hobbies and interests.”
Stiles chuckles at his snooty tone.
“And I also like watching Friends.” Derek tells her, just for good measure, just to prove a point.
“No.” Stiles shakes her head, holds up a dismissive hand. “This is too much. I can’t.”
Derek glares at her.
Stiles chuckles again, points at his sweet furbrows as she tells him, “See, that grumpy sour wolf face is the reason I don’t accept any of what you just told me.”
Derek sighs, places his empty beer bottle down on the coffee table, slowly rises from the couch. “Well, I think it’s safe to say you’re OK and you don’t need me to keep you company anymore.”
Stiles lifts her free hand, wriggles her fingers and chuckles as she watches the wolf being shoved back down onto the couch by “an unseen force”.
Derek scoffs as he looks back at her. “Rude... Cute. But rude.”
