Rachel and I rushed out of the car towards the yellow tape around the front door.
Officer Jim stopped us immediately. Jim Holland is Rachel's father and a good friend of my father.
"Whoa kids, sorry but this is a crime scene."
"Crime scene!" Rachel said in hysterics.
"Rachel, honey. Please go over to the deputy."
I couldn't stop myself. I asked Officer Holland, "Where is Max? Is he okay?"
Rachel and I stared at her dad's face. He had that same face when he told me that Rachel's mother had passed away. My stomach fell to the ground. Rachel screeched in hysterical tears. The deputy rushed over and took Rachel away, comforting her.
"I am sorry Jan. Max was found dead in his room."
I managed to look at Jim's face. "Suicide?"
"No, we found the backdoor forced open. It might be breaking gone wrong."
I thought the worst. Did Mr. Klaus do this? Why?
Jim grabbed my shoulder and walked me off to the side. "Jan, your father called me earlier about a k********g? Are you okay?"
I looked over at Rachel and we both went downtown.
In Jim's office, I told him everything about the club. Jim sent me to the clinic in the back to get my blood drawn. I continued my story with Jim as the doctor ran their tests. I told him about meeting Mr. Klaus and Jim went pale.
"Klaus? As in Demitri Klaus?"
"No. Richard Klaus. Who is Demitri?"
"Never mind that. Then what?"
I continued to the part about Max and I went silent. I looked up at Jim and asked, "Do you think Mr. Klaus could have done this?"
Jim sat in silence. Then my parents went in with the doctor. It was my father's friend, Dr. Blackhard.
"Hello Jan, how are you feeling?"
"Fine sir. What did you find out?"
The doctor looked over at Jim. "It appears that the same substance they found in Max's home is the same as the one in Jan's blood. Jan, I am going to send you over to the hospital. "
"What?!" Now I am hysterical.
My father gently pasted my shoulder. "He just wants to flush your system. Nothing terrible."
I reluctantly agreed and Rachel rode with me in the ambulance. She sat there in silence. I knew she was very angry. I tired to comfort her, but she only sat there quietly.
