The morning sunlight shone through the hospital window. I blinked awake and gazed around the room. Get-well gifts, including flowers and balloons, were on the table underneath the television. It's a nice feeling that you are thought of often. The boxes ranged in size. I smiled at myself and looked over at my nightstand.
There were a bunch of cards stacked side-by-side. I recognized one card's handwriting. It was my boss. I was grateful that he said that I was not fired. He wanted me to vacation since I saved many vacation hours for a year. This is a polite way of giving me a break. This will allow me to discover what happened to Max and what he did to Richard Klaus. Also, why did he go after me? No offense to Rachel, but why did Max not go after her?
I picked up the next card. My father left me a note saying he was making a room for me and my mother back at his house. This made me think of Claire. Did she know what Max was planning? Did she want me out of the way?
I stared at the ceiling, thinking about all the possible reasons why this happened to me. There weren't many logical reasons why. But there must be something. As I lay there in my bed, I had no idea someone had come into my hospital room. The voice startled me so much that I thought I would jump through the ceiling.
It was Rachel. She brought me a blonde teddy bear with a band-aid over his heart. She was wearing a gray polo shirt and tan khakis. Her hair was in a tight braid. She has been crying, but she seems better. She smiled and pulled up a chair next to my bed.
"How are you feeling, Jan?"
"Tired, but I feel better than yesterday."
"I'm glad. I learned my father knew about Max being involved in a rival company against Klaus Corporation. "
"Really? I thought Richard said that he hired Max. "
"I guess Max was double-dipping. "
Jan looked at Rachel's attire and smiled. " How was it at work? Did you have fun? "
She looked at herself. " Oh yeah, I am actually on a break. I'll have to get back soon. "
I couldn't help but smile at her success. After talking for a few minutes, the nurse came in to take me for a CAT scan. Rachel kissed my forehead and left. The nurse took me down, which gave me time to think about everything I had learned. Only one thing came to mind. A rival company must have approached Max. The rival company must have wanted a scandal to ruin Klaus's company. By the time all the tests were completed, it was late evening. The doctor came in.
"Hello, Jean. How are you feeling? Any better? "
"Yes, thank you. "
"Well, I have some good news. Your tests came back fine. So, you are welcome to be discharged. "
I didn't hesitate. I checked myself out and went down to the lobby. I finally realized that I didn't have my phone. The reception desk was empty. I went outside and was greeted by a familiar face.
Richard Klaus was exiting his fancy Mustang and turned to go inside. Our eyes met, and I felt glad to see him. I wanted to talk to him about Max. I waved at Richard, and Richard waved back. He walked over to me.
