“Who is it, Jan?”
I took a big swig of water and looked with determination. “That would be the guy who was in the room. And I am going to find out who he is!”
“Maybe I should call the cops? I mean he could be dangerous!”
“No. I just want to talk to him.”
I got up and walked over to him. He was wearing a business suit. His short neck-length hair was slicked back. He was staring at his smartphone as I approached him. The bartender stared at me as he handed a sandwich over to the man. I gulped harshly and cleared my throat.
“Hey, remember me?”
The man turned. He was gorgeous. His dark green eyes stared at me as he spoke with that strange accent.
“No. Can I help you?”
I stared in silence for a moment and then I proceeded to ask him if he was staying at the hotel called Vikings Inn. He stopped just before taking a bite. He stared and then asked me.
“Who are you? What do you want?”
“I am Jan. I woke up in your room after being drugged at this bar. Who are you?”
He turned in his barstool and looked into my eyes. He knew I wasn’t lying.
“I am Richard Klaus. I am on a business trip for my father’s company. I do not know why you were in my room. But I assure you that I have never seen you before in my life. Were you hurt in any way?”
I noticed that he was very cautious and spoke with soft words. He seemed worried himself. I asked if anyone else had access to his room. He sat and thought for a moment. Then he said something I never wanted to hear.
“Max Rivera.”
My heart fell to my stomach. I turned to Rachel at our table and asked Mr. Klaus to join our table. He walked over and Rachel’s jaw dropped at his appearance. She introduced herself and we sat down. I told Rachel what I had just learned. Her face turned red with anger. I asked Mr. Klaus how he knew Max.
“Max was a new employee for a division building we are placing in the town next to this one. He was going to work as my assistant. Now he is fired.”
That wasn’t good enough for me. I wanted Max.
