A Date with Danger

267 Words
The rest of the day blurred. Annie’s glares burned into Alex’s back, but she ignored them. She had bigger things to worry about—like her unexpected date with Lucas. After classes, Luna helped her get ready. “You’re stunning,” she gushed, hands on Alex’s shoulders. Alex smiled at her reflection—a pink satin dress hugging her curves, her hair swept up in a delicate bun. “I feel like a princess,” she whispered. “You are,” Luna said. But when Alex reached the garden, it wasn’t Lucas waiting. “Jesse?” she gasped. He leaned against a tree, a dangerous smile on his lips. “Lucas won’t make it.” Alex backed away. “What do you mean?” “He’s busy,” Jesse purred. “But I wouldn’t leave you alone on a night like this.” Alex’s heart twisted. She’d felt something for him, but she’d chosen Lucas. “I have to go,” she whispered. He moved like a shadow, pressing a finger to her lips. “Don’t pretend, love. We both know you wanted that kiss.” She shivered at his touch. “Jesse—” He leaned in. She tried to pull away but desire anchored her feet. His lips met hers, soft and electric. Alex melted against him. Then a scream ripped from her throat. A body—a mundane—hung in the garden, blood dripping. Letters scrawled across the wall: ALEXANDRIA VLADIMIR, TRAITOR! Her heart stopped as Jesse’s arms circled her. “Looks like you’ve got more enemies than you thought,” he whispered.
