Chapter Six: The Betrayal
Amelia stared at the bloody key in her palm.
For a moment, she forgot how to breathe.
“Eve?”
No answer.
The corridor was empty.
Damian rushed toward her, his gun raised.
“Where did she go?”
“I don't know.”
He looked at the key.
“Did she give you that?”
Amelia nodded.
“She told me to trust her.”
Damian’s eyes hardened.
“That could be exactly what Victor wants.”
“She’s my sister.”
“We don't know her.”
“I know enough.”
“And I've spent my entire life not knowing she existed.”
Her voice cracked.
“I won't abandon her.”
Damian looked at her for a long moment.
Then he lowered his gun.
“Fine. We find her.”
A sudden beep came from the key.
Amelia nearly dropped it.
The tiny metal head had begun glowing.
“What is that?”
Damian took it carefully.
A blue light appeared on the wall.
Then a hidden door slid open.
Amelia stared.
“Victor's estate is full of surprises.”
Damian stepped inside.
“Stay behind me.”
They entered a narrow room.
Unlike the archive, this place was clean and modern.
A single computer sat on a desk.
Its screen displayed one message.
WELCOME, AMELIA.
Her stomach twisted.
“It's waiting for me.”
Damian moved toward the computer.
“Don't touch anything.”
Too late.
The screen changed.
A video began playing.
Amelia’s mother appeared.
She looked younger, frightened, and exhausted.
“Amelia, if you're watching this, Victor failed to keep you away.”
Amelia covered her mouth.
“Mom.”
Her mother's eyes filled with tears.
“I need you to understand something. I never abandoned you.”
Amelia's eyes burned.
“I was forced to choose between you and Eve.”
Damian stood silently beside her.
“I chose you because I believed I could return for Eve.”
Her mother looked down.
“I was wrong.”
The video continued.
“Victor discovered that Eve had survived the procedure. He became obsessed with her because she had something you didn't.”
“What?” Amelia whispered.
The woman on the screen answered as if she could hear her.
“Memory.”
Amelia frowned.
“Eve remembered everything.”
Her mother continued.
“She remembered the laboratory. She remembered Victor. She remembered Damian.”
Damian stiffened.
Amelia turned toward him.
“You knew her.”
“I told you I didn't.”
The screen went black.
Amelia turned to Damian.
“You forgot her.”
“I was drugged.”
“What?”
“My father had doctors erase the memories.”
“Why?”
“Because I tried to expose him.”
Amelia stared at him.
A metallic click sounded behind them.
They spun around.
Eve stood in the doorway.
She was holding a knife.
Damian raised his gun.
“Put it down.”
Eve shook her head.
“You can't trust him.”
Amelia stepped between them.
“Eve, wait.”
“He doesn't know what Victor did to him.”
Damian’s expression darkened.
“Your baby isn't the only thing Victor wants.”
Amelia's hand moved to her stomach.
“Then what?”
“Damian.”
He went still.
“Your father put something inside you.”
Silence.
Amelia looked at Damian.
“What does that mean?”
Eve lowered the knife.
“Your brother was the first attempt.”
Damian's face changed.
“I don't have a brother.”
“You did.”
Amelia's breath caught.
Eve continued.
“He died before you were born.”
Damian stared at her.
“That's impossible.”
“Victor lied.”
Eve walked closer.
“He took your brother's cells and used them to create you.”
Damian looked sick.
“So I'm an experiment too.”
“Yes.”
Amelia reached for his hand.
He didn't pull away.
For once, the ruthless billionaire looked completely lost.
“What does my baby have to do with that?” he asked.
Eve looked at Amelia.
“Everything.”
She took the key from Amelia's hand and turned it over.
A tiny compartment opened.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
Amelia unfolded it.
Three words were written in black ink.
TRUST NO ONE.
Below them was a name.
LILY.
Amelia's heart stopped.
“My sister?”
Eve nodded.
“Lily works for Victor.”
“No.”
“I saw her talking to him.”
“You're lying.”
“She helped bring you here.”
Amelia shook her head.
“Lily saved me.”
“She saved you because Victor needed you alive.”
Damian looked at Eve.
“Why should we believe you?”
“Because I have proof.”
Eve pulled a second photograph from her pocket.
It showed Lily standing beside Victor.
Amelia stared at it.
“No.”
Amelia’s world began collapsing.
“She wouldn't.”
Eve's voice softened.
“People do terrible things when they believe they're protecting someone.”
Her stomach twisted.
“Then why help me?”
“Because I'm tired of watching Victor control everyone's lives.”
A loud alarm suddenly sounded.
Eve's face changed.
“They found us.”
Damian grabbed Amelia's hand.
“How many?”
“Enough.”
Footsteps thundered through the corridor.
Amelia looked at Eve.
“What do we do?”
Eve opened a hidden panel.
“There is one way out.”
Damian pulled Amelia toward it.
“Go.”
Eve stayed behind.
Amelia stopped.
“You're coming with us.”
“I can't.”
“Yes, you can.”
“If I leave, they'll follow.”
“Then we'll face them together.”
Eve smiled sadly.
“You really are my sister.”
Gunfire erupted nearby.
Eve pushed Amelia through the opening.
“Go!”
Damian pulled her after him.
The panel slammed shut.
Amelia heard Eve scream.
She turned back.
“Eve!”
Damian held her tightly.
“We have to move.”
“No!”
“We'll come back.”
“You promise?”
He looked into her eyes.
“I promise.”
They ran through the tunnel until they reached an underground garage.
A black SUV waited with its engine running.
Damian opened the door.
Amelia climbed inside.
Then she saw someone sitting in the driver's seat.
Lily.
Amelia froze.
Lily slowly turned around.
Her face was wet with tears.
“I can explain.”
Damian raised his gun.
Amelia stared at her sister.
“Tell me the truth.”
Lily looked at her stomach.
Then she whispered,
“Victor isn't the one who wants your baby.”
Amelia's blood ran cold.
“Then who does?”
Lily's eyes filled with fear.
“The person who ordered your kidnapping.”
She swallowed.
“It was Damian.”
Amelia turned toward him.
And for the first time, Damian had no answer.
