Epilogue One Saturday morning, my windows vibrated and looking out I saw a lorry pulling up. Slipping on my shoes, I went outside to investigate what it was doing there. It was a bright mild spring morning, and as I opened the front door, birdsong greeted me. The first buds were beginning to break through in my garden, and along the street trees were in leaf. A large removal van had parked next door, and two burly men in blue overalls jumped out of it. An elegant young woman was standing on the pavement, her hair neatly tied in a low ponytail at the nape of her neck. When she half turned towards me, I saw that her make-up was impeccable.
