12 The fine weather gave way to a rainy period and the flow of customers became sporadic. We were still busy serving morning coffees, and had periods of hectic activity around teatime, but otherwise we were fairly quiet. By midday the café was usually empty. If Poppy wasn’t at Jane’s house, I would take her for a walk before sitting with Hannah over a mug of steaming hot chocolate, while my little dog dozed in the corner. During my chats with Hannah, I kept quiet about my suspicions of Alice and her letters, instead focusing on more mundane matters.
