Chapter 1

1900 Words
Sophie, you have to tell them soon. I transmitted softly. Ava, l can't! They'll go crazy! Imagine how made Keefe would be or how angry Fitz would get! I can't afford to make mistakes that would make them turn against me. I already feel bad for how many secrets I've kept from them. They barely know a thing about my personal life or my past. Sophie's reply seemed hushed. Almost like a whisper, but scared. Worried. Always on edge. I wished so hard that l could telepathically reach out to hug my sister. She was so worried all the time. Worried that someone would hurt her or that she would do something wrong. She didn't show her fear, so nobody knew. Except me. She worried that she had to be perfect all the time, no matter what. Sophie, you don't have to be perfect okay? Just because we aren't humans doesn't mean we don't have flaws. Everyone makes mistakes and nobody is perfect, even if Elves come pretty close. I could imagine Sophie having a thin crinkle above her brow. Sophie relax! Everything is going to be fine. I assured her But it's not! Sophie mentally cried. I want to show them to you, l want them to know who you are and what you are to me! I want them to know that l have a sister. A sister like me. With 5 special abilities and brown eyes. A sister who isn't just my sister but my best friend and twin! I just want them to know that l have another side that I'm not complete without. Another side that l need with me. Another half that l can't manage without. The pain in my heart almost made me faint. I knew what l had to do. Sophie, I'm coming. I told her firmly. Wait not yet! I need to get to our meeting point first! Sophie exclaimed nervously. Ah yes, our meeting point. Same with me. I'll tell my parents that I'm going to a sleepover for a few days with one of my imaginary friends l told them existed. I got up from my bed and slipped on my shoes. Like Sophie, l had always had trouble making friends. Sophie was the only one that l had. But when the Black Swan took her to the Lost Cities without warning l was terrified. I didn't know what l was going to do. I flinched as a vivid memory flashed through my head. Sophie is on the ground, blood coming from her head. The pain had knocked me over. And l watched in shock as an ambulance pulled up, and the neighbor, Mr. Forkle had ran to Sophie so fast, l didn't think it was possible. I remember the ear-shattering scream of her mother when she saw Sophie lying unconscious and her ghost pale sister, Amy, as she saw her big sister being lifted off of the ground and onto a stretcher. I remember sneaking to the hospital, just wanting to catch one glimpse of Sophie. To make sure that she was okay. And then one day when everyone was gone and l was sitting on the outside window sill, the neighbor walked in. Mr. Forkle was his name. He had sat at Sophie's bedside and placed his chubby hands on her forehead. He wore a pained expression and when he closed his eyes a headache spiked so hard, it almost knocked all the air out of me. I didn't know what had happened, but as l got up and regained my strength l realized. Mr. Forkle had triggered Sophie's first ability. Which meant that he had triggered mine. You're thinking about the memory again, aren't you? Sophie transmitted quietly. Her voice echoed through my head. I'm going to our meeting spot. I told her, avoiding the question. I'm almost there Ava, make sure you come first. I don't want to be there alone. My heart shattered for Sophie. I had almost forgotten about her k********g. I clenched my fist tight and bit my lip. Hard. I'm coming right now Sophie And with that l climbed out of my window and messaged my parents telling them I'd be out for a few days. Then l looked to the sun and raised my dark brown leaping crystal to the light. Time to go to the Wandering Woods. *** I arrived at Sophie's tree and closed my eyes to clear the head rush. Like Sophie, l was consistently battling headaches and had never been good at light leaping. I had never faced the Neverseen before, but that was probably because they had no idea that l existed. If they did, l would be dead by now. Thunder cracked in the sky and my head snapped out of the daze. "Ava?" A soft, gentle voice called quietly. I whipped around like a maniac and ran forward embracing my sister in a tight hug. She grunted from the pain but hugged me back. When l finally pulled away l decided to study her. Sophie's blonde hair was still the same length as mine and her shiny brown eyes were still lighter than my dark ones. She was wearing a deep red tunic with black pants. She had a jeweled comb in her hair and a dark black sash. She was wearing dark red gloves to block her enchanting, and for her shoes, she had kept them simple. Sturdy black boots. I looked down at my outfit, which of course was the exact same, except my gloves were black. Man, enhancing was a pain. "Ava? You there?" Sophie's voice made my head snap up. "Yes, Sophie I'm here." I laughed lightly and she hugged me again. "I missed you so much you know that?" She said, her voice thick. "The Neverseen have attacked 7 times and we lost every single battle." Sophie's voice wavered. She was scared of them. And she wasn't alone. I was scared for her. What could l do to make her forget... Then l remembered! My gift! I hugged her tighter and slipped a clip into her hand. She stepped back and opened her palm. "What is it, Ava?" She asked curiously. "It's like your panic switch," I explained, pointing at her gloved finger, then to mine. "If you're ever in danger and need my help, all you have to do is press that jewel in the middle and my comb lights up and creates a beam that allows me to leap to wherever you are." I took my clip out of my pocket to show her. "The beam is also un-trackable, so people like Lady Gisela, Tinker, and even Dex can't find who created the source or what it leads to." Sophie raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure you're not a Technopath?" She joked. "Yes, I'm sure!" I laughed. "I used a crystal-making kit that l stole from the ogres that time l was here." I shrugged. Sophie's eyes looked like they were going to pop out of their sockets. "You visited the ogre capital?!" She shrieked waving her arms like an octopus. "Yeah?" "Why didn't you tell me?!! You could've been caught Ava, and I wouldn't have known!!" Sophie moaned. "Well, l wasn't caught." I pointed out, cringing as Sophie narrowed her eyes. "Fineeee, l promise not to go anywhere else without my overprotective twin sister who knows 100,000 ways to mentally and physically kill me." I even raised my right hand to make it seem more realistic. Of course, that didn't work. Sophie's imparter flashed. She was getting a call. Sophie was about to answer the call but first, she looked at me. She pointed to her Imparter, which read the words, Magnate Leto, in bold writing. My mind immediately flashed. Magnate Leto = Mr. Forkle = Black Swan. I needed to hide. I ran behind Sophie's Wandering tree and waited as she took her call. My hands toyed with the brown flowers on the pale yellow-colored branches of Sophie's tree. Next to it was Dex's Wanderling which had periwinkle flowers and strawberry red berries. "Ava?" Sophie called. I walked out from behind the tree. "I have to go," Sophie said. Even though l wasn't an Empath l could clearly sense some sad moods. That was my queue. I grabbed Sophie's hands and waited for her to look at me. "I'll see you again soon, okay? Just....contact me after you're done the Black Swans assignment?" I asked hopefully. "Of course Ava." Sophie hugged me tightly. "Oh! Let me put the clip for you!" I exclaimed excitedly suddenly remembering. I can't believe l had forgotten about it! Sophie laughed as she placed the cool metal object in my palm. I opened the tip and clasped it onto her hair. When l was done she reached for mine and did the same. We both reached up to touch our matching objects and looked at each other. I ran my hand across the "S" initial on the clip, which stood for Sophie. Sophie's clip had an A engraved on hers. "When will l see you again?" Sophie asked softly. "Whenever you want" I blinked my eyes as my eyes started to water and my vision started to blur. l reached into my pocket and took out a light blue crystal. Then l raised my hands to the light and let the warm feather tingle my brain and carry me away. "I love you, Ava!" Was the last thing l heard before the Lost Cities and Sophie disappeared. *** When l arrived home l went straight to my room and jumped into bed clutching Elly, my blue elephant. Sophie had a matching one. Sophie. I got up and started pacing. I wonder what the Black Swan needed her for. They had put enough pressure on her before, what did they need now? Was she going somewhere? I heard a soft beeping sound and reached for my Imparter excitedly. She was already done?! It must've been a quick assignment! I had only been home for 15 minutes. I walked to my desk and opened a drawer pulling out my Imparter. I frowned when l saw that it was blank. There were no missed calls? What was the vibrating then? I froze and slowly raised my hand to reach for my clip. To my horror, it was buzzing. And when l pressed on the flashing blue stone there was a bright glowing path in front of me. A leaping beam.
