Aurora
I’m fuming when I hang up the phone with Leah covered in a sense of urgency to get down to the police station so I can rip Steele a new one and retrieve Kane out of lockup. In my sudden haste, I knock over a glass of wine when reaching for my keys, just when I’m about to run out the door so frantically I throw on a pair of jeans and a buttoned down blouse, that I don’t bother finishing to button up. I make it to my compact Toyota Corolla speeding off towards town well exceeding the speed limit. I’ve only made it half a block away from my house when the sound of police sirens ring in my ears. Looking back into my rear view mirror, I see I’m being pulled over by Chase Richardson, one of Steele’s police buddies. Immediately, I’m fully aware that Chase didn’t just pull me over by chance. Steele knew I was going to come as soon as word got out about his juvenile actions. He sent Chase to distract me so he could continue with his further harassment towards Kane without me impeding on his assailment.
I pull over to the side of the road, jumping out of my driver's seat, slamming the car door behind me and start stomping my way towards Chase, “Just mail me the f*****g ticket Chase! I don’t have time to bullshit with you.” There’s no way in hell I’m letting Chase hold me up because Steele has already filled his head with lies.
Chase gets out of his car, making his way to me, “Aurora, Steele sent me here to take you back home. He knows what he’s doing. He just wants to protect you from that stranger.” His broad stiff shoulders tightening together with his approach, a hint of disapproval towards me seething from his remarks.
“Steele’s biggest concern is getting c**k blocked. He doesn’t own me like he thinks just because I let him stick his d**k in me. I know Steele well enough to know Kane didn’t do anything wrong to get himself thrown in jail. Everybody in this town is f****d up and ignorant to the fact that if you’re not from here you could still be a decent person. I don’t need protection, I can take care of myself. I may not know Kane, but I like the guy and I’m willing to give him a chance. That doesn’t mean I’m ready to ride his d**k into the sunset like Steele is probably worried about.” I turn around heading back to my car, ” I’m getting Kane. Try to f*****g stop me.” I defiantly protest. I’m so sick of this town and its negative attitude towards the unknown. Okay, yes, I am attracted to Kane, but everyone deserves a chance which no one but Leah, Jonah, and myself are willing to give.
I hear Chase coming up from behind me. Trying to walk in closer, stop me from leaving. His hand grabs my arm swinging me around so we are face to face, “As much as your unfiltered candor amuses me, you're fully aware I should still hold you up for speeding right?”
“You know I could tell everyone how you ate your sister's s**t out of her potty when you guys were kids, right? Oh, yeah, Lauren told me,” I smirk with the knowledge that I should shut him up.
“I was two!” Chase spurts, halting him in his place dumbfounded. The embarrassing childhood occurrence is something I’m sure he doesn’t want shared throughout the town.
“That’s what I thought,” I chuckle, placing my back to him once more, grabbing the handle of my car door.
I’m able to make it back into my driver’s seat, the window fully down. Chase gets to the window, leaning in with his hands firmly pressing down at the bottom of the sill, "You know I still need to give you a ticket?"
“You know I don’t give a f**k,” I smile a huge devious grin. “You also know I’m headed to the station. If you want, you can try to lock me up once I get there.” I tease, knowing Chase really isn’t going to do anything. Like everyone else in this town, I’ve known him since we were kids. He doesn’t have the guts to to try and stop me when I’m this roweled up. I’m a force to be reckoned with when you set me off. He is also fully aware that I will tell everyone about that incident that Lauren, his older sister, shared with me.
I restart my car, Chase releasing his grip from my vehicle, taking a step back once I turn the key, igniting the engine. I begin to drive, only making it a couple of feet away, “You’re digging your own grave Aurora,” Chase yells out.
I throw my arm out of the window, gesturing the finger, “Eat s**t Chase.” I yell out, mocking him for his childhood indiscretions. I can’t help but chuckle to myself at the easy burn.
I take off like a bolt of lighting, once again exceeding the speed limit without care. I don’t bother to see if Chase is still behind me, I have bigger concerns dancing through my head.
It’s not long before I’m parking my car in front of Clyde’s Bank’s precinct. My sense of exigency getting me there in a quick fast. I race through the front door, storming in like a bat out of hell within seconds of my arrival.
I make sure to bypass the main entrance, easily gaining access to the holding cells. Everyone knows me, knowing to make way and clear a path.
There’s only five cells because this town is so small and isn't prone to much criminal activity that I easily find Kane, the only one in lockup. He doesn’t notice me at first, his form lying back on the minute cot staring at the ceiling.
“Kane, get up. You’re getting out of here,” I call over to him. The sounds of my voice register without delay, Kane immediately contorting his head to look my way behind the confining bars.
He jumps up from the bed with the revelation that I have arrived. Excitement and relief flushes over him as he brings himself to the door of his detainment, his fingers lacing on to the metal bars, “You don’t know how glad I am to see you.”
“You have nothing to worry about. I’ll clean up this whole mess.” I place my hands over his, needing to give him comfort, me needing to feel his touch once more. The time has been brief since our last encounter, but I can’t seem to not be longing for the welcoming response his small afflictions gifts me. The goosebumps form again, a tingling warmth fills me with the contact.
“Aurora, get the hell out of here!” Steele’s voice bellows in the background. I look over my shoulder to see him approaching me disgruntled. I could give two shits.
I ignore his outburst. Stiiding past him, I approach Jimmy who is sitting in the corner with the cell keys chained to his belt , “Give me the keys now!” Steele only stands a few feet away.
Jimmy glances over to Steele looking for a response, looking for answers because he doesn’t know if he should listen to me or wait for Steele to give a command.
Before I can get Jimmy to hand me the keys, Steele replies with a stern look, “Don’t give them to her Jimmy. He’s a criminal. He broke the law and then tried to assault me.”
“You busted my f*****g tail light and then tried to give me a ticket! All I did was try to walk away.” Kane yells out from his cell in defense.
Jimmy sits there bewildered, confused as to how to react. His head just makes way glancing back and forth between me and Steele, waiting for one of us to give him a definitive resolution.
I already knew the arrest had to be bogus. Kane confirming that with his explanation as to what aspired, so I reach down to Jimmy’s waist and snatch the keys off of his small clip that attaches them to his belt.
“Aurora, your breasts are hanging out! They were all up in Jimmy’s face when you leaned over. Button your f*****g shirt!” Steele’s overbearing obsession clouds everything else that is occurring around him.
“That’s because my big ass boobies are trying to break free just busting out on their own!” You should know better than anyone else here that these suckers can’t be contained as many times you've had your face buried in them.” I fire back holding nothing in, making sure I rattle him some more, throw him off his game. I can’t remember the last time I had been this angry, Steele hitting every nerve possible within me. There’s nothing I won’t say, nothing I won’t do to eradicate this f****d up situation.
For a second, I only hear the sounds of laughter echoing in the room. Both Kane and Jimmy are cackling in the background, amused by my boldness. Steele is not so easily entertained as he attempts to retrieve the keys from my grasp.
Steele takes my hand, tugging away, but not without a fight in an attempt to get the keys out of my possession. I've completely humiliated him, among exposing myself to another man. It only makes Steele's temper escalate more.
I fight back, throwing in my other hand, almost faltering to the floor, trying to maintain my grip on the one thing that can free Kane. My feet that were once planted securely on the ground begin to slide with the rest of my body as I fight to not let go.
“Give them to me! You're out of control Aurora!” Steele struggles to pry them from my grips, his enraging anger can be felt along with his forcing tugs, fuming like a madman. A villainous aura surrounds him. At that moment I see it. I see that Steele truly is lost, the good I thought he held was just an illusion. His father’s abuse has taken its toll, it has changed him. There is no decency left in him, he’s not human anymore, he’s become a monster.
“Get off of her, you’re going to hurt her!” Kane screams out, rattling the bars with his hands, trying to be heard, desperate to save me. It’s Kane that is my security, my protector, not Steele I’m suddenly learning.
Steele is so much stronger than me, the keys almost in his possession no matter how hard I attempt to fight back with all my might. I’m about to lose them in our game of tug of war, but then Mr. Anderson enters the room and intervenes.
“Steele, let her go! Let them both go.” Mr. Anderson authoritatively calls out. Causing both of us to freeze, to end our entanglement.
I fall back onto the floor, keys still in tact. Steele promptly redirecting his attention to his father. Steele is showing signs of fear, his tense body falling into a slight shiver from the appearance of his former abuser. Even though Steele can now overpower the man physically, Steele has never fully stopped being apprehensive in Mr. Andrerson’s company.
“But Dad....,” Steele cries out.
“Jonah called me. He showed me the video footage from the bar. I know what you’ve done and be well aware I don’t approve. I may not be the chief anymore, but the law is the law.” Assertively Mr. Anderson speaks, not letting Steele finish his sentence.
Mr. Anderson may not be the best man to enforce the law considering the lines he’s crossed, but he does have some morals.
“Go,” Steele shakes his head, looking to me in chagrin.
I lift up off the dirty flooring. Finding my feet, I walk over to Kane’s cell, freeing him, taking his hand and escort him out of the police station to my car in silence covered by everyone's stares as we make way past the entire force.
