Chapter 3 Adams pov The smell hit me first, sweet, warm, and strangely different. It wrapped around my senses like a forbidden spell, soft but maddening, pulling something deep inside me that I didn’t even know existed. For a moment, I stood frozen in the middle of the room, my fingers tightening against my palm as my wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin. “Mate…” The word slipped from my lips before I could stop it. It wasn’t possible, at least, that was what my mind told me. I had walked past hundreds of women in my life, noble Lycans, strong she-wolves, even the daughters of powerful Alphas and never once had my body reacted this way. Her scent rushed through me again, sweeter this time, intoxicating. And then it hit me. She was the same woman from the hospital. The same one who had fallen to her knees, begging me to spare her mother’s life. What kind of cruel joke was this? I hissed loudly. The Moon Goddess couldn’t possibly think this was funny. Out of all the women in the world, she made her my mate? I tried to steady my breath, but the pull was unbearable. The more I looked at her, the more my chest tightened. My wolf clawed against my insides, desperate to touch her, to claim what was his. My body reacted on instinct before my mind could catch up. When she turned to leave, she moved muttering something under her breath, I reached out and grabbed her arm. Her skin burned against mine, sending an electric shock up my veins. The moment our eyes met, everything else disappeared. “Stay calm and stop acting like a child,” I whispered, though my voice was rough, trembling slightly. I didn’t even recognize myself. I inhaled deeply, her scent wrapping around me, drowning me. The wolf inside me growled with hunger. My eyes glowed faintly as I muttered the word that sealed my fate “Mate.” a smile escaped my lips. But the reaction cut deeper than I expected. She jerked her arm, glaring up at me with a mix of fear and disgust. “What did you just call me? That thing you just called me isn’t my name, and I won’t tolerate it if you call me names, do you understand me?” She was fire—stubborn, furious, and painfully human. Every word from her lips made me want to either silence her or pull her closer. “You’re my mate,” I said softly, more to myself than to her, my eyes trailing down her neck as if my soul had already chosen her. Before I could stop myself, my instincts took over. My hand reached behind her neck, tilting her head slightly as my fangs slid out. My wolf was in control now. He’d waited centuries for this, for her. The moment my fangs pierced her skin, I felt her body jolt violently. Her scream tore through the room like lightning, raw and agonizing. Her blood flooded my senses, warm, fragile, and then the bond ignited. Fire coursed through me. bright and wild, filling every corner of my soul. But then… something went wrong. The mark, our sacred symbol, began to fade. The glow that usually spread beneath the skin vanished before my eyes. Her body went limp, collapsing to the floor as I stumbled back in confusion. “What the hell…” I muttered, staring at my own hands. My fangs retracted, trembling as I wiped the blood from my lips. The connection I expected to feel strong, deep, eternal, was barely there. It was weak and almost nonexistent. My wolf whimpered inside me, restless and confused. Why isn’t it working? Her voice broke through my thoughts. “What did you do to me? Is this how much you hate me?” She looked so fragile, her voice cracked, her eyes filled with tears and terror. I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. The shame hit me like a wave. For the first time in years, I had no words. I just stood there, frozen, watching the girl who was supposed to be mine fall apart because of me. When she said it—“So, the rumors about your family being Lycans are true?” I felt my chest tighten. She knew, I thought mom said it's a secret, how comes the humans knew about it. The secret we had guarded for centuries was laid bare before a human. My human. Her hand clutched at the bite on her neck, her body trembling, yet she still glared at me with defiance. “Stay away from me, you monster,” she whispered. “You’re human,” I finally said, realizing it fully as I slumped into the nearest chair. My heart pounded heavily in my chest, the truth crashing into me all at once. The reason the mark vanished, the reason the bond felt incomplete,it was because she wasn’t one of us. I had just marked a human. The room went silent except for the sound of her ragged breathing. She backed away, her eyes wide and terrified. “And you’re a monster! A dog!” she shouted, pointing at me like I was something filthy. I stared at her for a long time, my mind racing. I didn’t feel anger, not anymore. Just confusion… and something else, fear. Not even a fear of her, but of what I’d done and the anxiety of how my mom would feel kept haunting me. A Lycan king marking a human,it was forbidden. Abominable. A sin against our very laws. My entire life had been built around those traditions, those rules, and in one impulsive moment, I had shattered them all. I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply, trying to calm the chaos inside me. My wolf whined, restless, torn between pride and guilt. She was still sitting on the floor, her body trembling, clutching her neck. Blood stained her fingers. The sight made something twist painfully inside me. Against my will, I found myself stepping closer. “Don’t touch me,” she whispered, inching backward until her back hit the wall. I stopped. My throat tightened as I forced the words out. “You should rest.” “Rest?” She laughed bitterly, her voice trembling. “You bit me like some animal, and you’re telling me to rest?” I turned away, fists clenched at my sides, her words hit me sharp like a blade, I tried to steady the growl threatening to break free. “Enough,” I muttered to myself, forcing my tone calm. I couldn’t let my emotions spiral, not here, not in front of her. I signaled one of the guards standing at the doorway. “Take her to the guest room,” I ordered, my voice low but firm. “Make sure she’s comfortable. And no one goes near her without my permission.” The guard hesitated, glancing at her before nodding. She looked at me with disbelief. “You can’t just lock me up!” she shouted, struggling against the guard’s grip. But I didn’t look back, I couldn’t, If I did, I might break. I walked sluggishly towards gbe window, cracking my bones, with anger surging through. As soon as she was gone, the silence hit me again, heavy, suffocating. I pressed a hand to my chest, trying to make sense of the chaos inside me. My wolf growled slowly. She’s ours. “She’s human,” I muttered aloud, pacing across the room. She’s still ours, the voice echoed in my head. I stopped in front of the window, staring out at the buildings beyond the mansion. A sudden memory of my mother’s words echoed faintly in my memory: A Lycan’s mark binds two souls, unless one of them doesn’t belong to our world. That was it. That was why the mark disappeared. She didn’t belong to my world. But if that was true… Why could I still feel her? My wolf stirred again, restless. I could feel her fear from across the house, the way her heartbeat raced, the faint tremor in her breath. Even if she was human, our connection wasn’t completely broken. Something had been forged between us. I ran a hand through my hair, frustration boiling beneath my skin. How was I supposed to explain this to my people? To my mother? The Lycan council would see it as weakness,an insult to our kind. They would demand her execution. “No,” I whispered to myself. The word felt strange on my tongue, but I meant it. “I won’t let anyone touch her.” I left the window and walked back to the couch, laying there for hours, lustily looking at the ceiling. Hours passed before I finally gathered the courage to go check on her. The guest room was quiet when I entered, except for the faint sound of her breathing. She was curled up on the bed, her face turned toward the wall. Her skin looked pale, and the bite mark on her neck had faded almost completely, leaving only a faint scar. I stood there, staring at her, my chest tightening again. She turned immediately, staring at me peacefully, too innocent to be harmed. I stepped closer, carefully, my hand hovered above her cheek but didn’t touch. The urge to reach out was unbearable, but I stopped myself. “You don’t even know what you’ve done to me,” I muttered softly, staring at the faint mark on her neck. “And I don’t know what I’ve done to you.” I felt a sense of adrenaline cursing through my vein, I turned to leave but paused at the door, my heart heavy. “Stay here, and don't let anyone take you away from this room, do you understand?” I commanded without looking at her. I stood there waiting for her to respond but I got no response instead.
