Chapter 11 - The dress

“I can almost understand him not telling me. He’s a man and they don’t think. But youuuu...” I turned my narrowed eyes to Meg “We spoke every week! Why didn’t you tell me that something was going on” Meg flopped backwards on my bed where we were throwing various dresses and outfits that I could wear to Garrets and Elise’s engagement party. “Im sorry Elle. Things have been tense between me and Garret and I was hoping it would just, I don’t know, go away” she looked at me upside down from her position on the bed and with an almost pleading look in her eyes stuck her bottom lip out in an exaggerated pout. “You didn’t tell me that either! What else have you been keeping secret from me, Megan Hughes hmm” I placed my hands on my hips and raised an eyebrow at her. She laughed and swatted me with a pillow. “Nothing. But I am glad to have my best friend back” “And I am glad that you are glad that I am back” I smirked. “Now tell me why you and Garret are fighting and help me find something to wear” She picked up a form fitting deep red knee length dress with spaghetti straps and a lace detail around the bust “This will look bomb with that new hair cut”  “That’s too much” I laughed hanging it back in the wardrobe “You’re killing all my Jessica Rabbit fantasies right now Elle”  I flopped down belly first on the bed next to her and looked at her seriously “Don’t ignore me, what’s been going on with you and Garret” I probed.  “Ugh nothing really, just some stuff went down while you were gone and we had a disagreement in how things should be dealt with and obviously I’m always right but he refused to admit it so that’s all there is to it. Honestly it’s no big deal” “If you say so! But when you want to tell what happened I’m all ears. What time is Cheryl getting here, I’m starving” The door bell rang as if on cue and we raced passed each other down the stairs to find Cheryl, Megs long term girlfriend, standing on the door step holding up boxes of steaming pizza!  A few hours later the 3 of us stepped out of the cab in the freezing January weather “I can’t believe you both talked me into this dress” I grumbled as I pulled my coat tighter around myself in an attempt to keep warm.  I walked into the Roadhouse and was pushed into a queue by Meg where Garret and Elise were greeting their guests. Just as the couple before me was finishing their hellos and well wishes, Meg snatched the coat off my shoulders “Let me take that for you” she said in a devilish tone and shoved me forward as her and Cheryl made a quick getaway.  And there I stood in front of Garret and his new fiancé Elise, in the most daring outfit I own. What was I doing.  Garrets eyes went wide and he cleared his throat awkwardly.  “Elise it’s lovely to see you again” I turned my attention to the tall blonde before me as my cheeks went pink at the look on his face. “And congratulations on your engagement. I’m pleased I made it back in time for the celebrations” I kissed her cheek politely then chanced a glance at Garret who still hadn’t said a word.  “Thank you Elle” I heard Elise respond but I couldn’t look at her. I offered Garret a smile and disappeared into the crowd.
