I felt heat rising to my cheeks as I quickened my pace to follow Garret and heard Derek laughing a little as I walked through the door.
“This is the office”
Garret pointed to a door on the left then moved toward another
“This door leads down to the cellar where all the barrels and booze are stored”
We got to a staircase leading up
“It’s a 2 bed apartment and you’ll be sharing it with Meg one of our other full timers”
He knocked and a few moments later the door opened revealing a tall girl a little older than me with short jet black hair.
“Meg this is Elle, our newbie and your new roommate”
He handed me a set of keys.
“Take tonight to get settled and come see me in the office in the morning. We’ll go through the role and work out a rota”
“Thank you Garret”
I turned to Meg
“It’s nice to meet you”
At once I was enveloped into a hug.
“You’re adorable and so tiny! Is that your natural hair colour? I love your accent! Where are you from?”
I ducked my head tugging on a strand of my auburn hair, a little embarrassed at my meagre 5ft height as she ushered me inside.
“London, I just moved here a week ago”
She looked at my hands
“Where’s all your stuff?”
“Oh still at the motel I was staying at, I should probably go grab it and check out”
Before I had even finished my sentence she had snatched up a set of car keys
“Come on, I’ll drive you. Me and you are going to be best friends Elle, I have a 6th sense about these things”
As we drove toward the motel I had been staying in Meg gave me the run down of what it was like working at the Roadhouse and gave me the gossip on all the other staff members
I asked questions about the hours and the pay. She told me the best ways to get the big tips which was a weird concept to me as tipping wasn’t really a thing in the UK. Especially for bar staff.
“So why’d you pick Maine?”
“I didn’t pick it really” I admitted. “I didn’t know what to do with myself when I finished University so when my visa came through I found the cheapest flight I could and it brought me here”
“What did you study?”
“Criminology and forensics” I shrugged. It had been my fathers choice. He was the top most rated forensic psychologist in England but I wasn’t keen on following in his foot steps which is how I found myself in America in the first place.
The rest of the night was spent getting to know each better and unpacking my things into what was now my home. It felt good to be out on my own away from pushy parents and 4 older brothers who all were shining examples of what their parents expected of them.
*Meanwhile as Garret and Derek get ready for the evening rush*
“She’s cute... and feisty” Garret said while flipping bar stools over off the bar and standing them upright.
“Yep and that accent whooo, the customers are gonna love her” Derek agreed
“I wonder if she’s seeing anyone ‘cause if not I’d definitely be interested in filling that position”
“Ha I doubt she’d be interested in some skinny ass bar manager” Derek teased
“Hey I’m not skinny, I’m lean! And is that a bet I hear”
“Sure I bet you.... my prized guitar I can get Elle on a date before you”
“The bets a bet” Garret nodded smirking
They shook hands.
