Chapter 18: The Exit
Sofia Sanders didn’t sleep.
Not after everything Adrian said.
Not after the way he looked at her—like she was no longer just part of a contract… but part of something much bigger.
Something she didn’t understand.
And something she didn’t want to be part of anymore.
The room felt suffocating.
The walls too close.
The air too heavy.
She sat at the edge of the bed, her hands clenched tightly together, her thoughts racing endlessly.
I’m leaving.
The decision echoed clearly in her mind.
For the first time since she entered the mansion…
She meant it.
This wasn’t fear talking anymore.
It wasn’t confusion.
It was instinct.
And her instinct was screaming at her to get out.
Now.
Sofia stood up abruptly, her heart pounding.
She didn’t need to pack much.
She hadn’t brought anything important with her anyway.
This place had never felt like home.
Just a cage disguised as luxury.
She moved quickly, grabbing her phone, her bag, anything she could carry.
Her hands trembled slightly, but she forced herself to stay focused.
Don’t think. Just go.
The moment she reached the door, she paused.
Her chest tightened.
What if he’s out there?
What if he stops me?
She swallowed hard.
“No…” she whispered. “I’m not staying here anymore.”
With that, she opened the door.
The hallway was quiet.
Too quiet.
But this time, she didn’t hesitate.
She stepped out and began walking—fast.
Her footsteps echoed against the polished floor as she made her way down the corridor.
Left.
Then right.
Then straight toward the main staircase.
Her heart raced faster with every step.
Freedom.
She was so close to it.
She could almost feel it.
The front doors came into view.
Tall.
Massive.
Beautiful.
And finally—
Within reach.
Relief flooded her chest.
She hurried forward, her breathing uneven as she grabbed the handle and pulled.
Nothing happened.
Her brows furrowed.
She pulled again.
Harder this time.
Still nothing.
“No…”
Her grip tightened as panic began to creep in.
She pushed.
Pulled.
Twisted the handle again.
Locked.
Her heart dropped.
“Why is it locked?” she whispered, her voice shaking.
That didn’t make sense.
This was the main entrance.
It shouldn’t be locked from the inside.
Should it?
Her breathing quickened as she stepped back, her eyes scanning the door.
“There has to be another way…”
She turned quickly, heading toward the side hallway.
There had to be another exit.
A back door.
Something.
Anything.
She moved faster now, her steps uneven, her mind racing.
But as she turned the corner—
She froze.
Adrian stood there.
Waiting.
Her breath caught instantly.
“How long have you been standing there?” she asked, her voice barely steady.
He didn’t answer.
He just watched her.
Calm.
Unreadable.
Like he had expected this.
Like he knew she would try.
Sofia’s chest tightened.
“I’m leaving,” she said, forcing strength into her voice.
Still, he didn’t respond.
Her frustration flared.
“Did you hear me?” she demanded. “I said I’m leaving.”
Adrian finally moved.
One slow step forward.
Then another.
Each step made her heart pound harder.
“You can’t leave,” he said quietly.
The words hit like ice.
“Watch me,” she snapped.
She tried to move past him, but he blocked her instantly.
Effortless.
Like she was never a threat to begin with.
“Move,” she said, her voice sharper now.
“No.”
Her hands clenched.
“This isn’t part of the contract,” she said. “You can’t keep me here.”
Adrian’s gaze darkened slightly.
“You think this is about a contract?”
Her breath caught.
“Then what is it about?”
Silence.
That silence again.
It was starting to suffocate her.
“Answer me!” she snapped.
Adrian stepped closer.
Too close.
Sofia’s heart raced, but she stood her ground this time.
“I told you already,” he said quietly. “You don’t get to choose anymore.”
Fear crept into her chest again.
Stronger this time.
“That’s not your decision,” she whispered.
His eyes locked onto hers.
Cold.
Certain.
“It already is.”
Her pulse pounded in her ears.
“No…” she shook her head. “No, I won’t accept this.”
She turned abruptly, trying to head in another direction—but once again, he was there.
Blocking her.
Every move.
Every path.
It was like he already knew what she would do before she did it.
Her breathing became uneven.
“You locked the doors,” she said slowly.
It wasn’t a question.
Adrian didn’t deny it.
Something inside her cracked.
“You had no right!” she snapped.
“I had every right.”
Her eyes widened.
“That’s insane.”
“No,” he said calmly. “It’s necessary.”
Her stomach dropped.
Necessary?
“What is wrong with you?” she whispered.
For a moment…
Something shifted in his expression.
Something almost human.
Almost… conflicted.
But it disappeared too quickly for her to be sure.
“You think I’m the danger here,” he said quietly.
A chill ran through her.
“You just threatened me,” she shot back.
“And I’m trying to keep you alive.”
Her breath caught.
The words didn’t make sense.
None of this made sense.
“From what?” she asked.
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
His gaze moved briefly down the hallway…
Toward the west wing.
Sofia noticed.
Her heart skipped.
“That room…” she whispered.
His eyes snapped back to hers instantly.
“Don’t.”
The warning came sharp.
Immediate.
But it was too late.
“You’re hiding something in there,” she said.
His jaw tightened.
“You already know that.”
“Then tell me what it is!”
“No.”
Frustration burned through her.
“You expect me to just stay here? To trust you after everything?”
“Yes.”
The answer came without hesitation.
That only made it worse.
Sofia let out a shaky breath, running a hand through her hair.
“This is crazy…” she murmured.
Her chest rose and fell rapidly as she looked around.
The mansion suddenly felt different.
Not grand.
Not luxurious.
But trapped.
Closed in.
Like every wall was watching her.
“You can’t keep me here forever,” she said quietly.
Adrian’s gaze didn’t waver.
“I don’t have to.”
Her heart skipped.
“What does that mean?”
Silence.
Then—
A sound.
Soft.
Faint.
But unmistakable.
Both of them froze.
Sofia’s breath caught as her eyes moved slowly toward the hallway behind Adrian.
Toward the west wing.
The sound came again.
A creak.
Like something moving.
Her chest tightened instantly.
“You heard that,” she whispered.
Adrian didn’t respond.
But the tension in his body said enough.
Her fear spiked.
“That’s what you’re talking about, isn’t it?” she said, her voice shaking.
Still no answer.
“Adrian…”
Her voice broke slightly.
“What is in this house?”
For the first time…
He didn’t look in control.
Not completely.
And that terrified her even more.
Because if Adrian—
Cold, controlled, dangerous Adrian—
Wasn’t in control…
Then who was?
The sound came again.
Louder this time.
Closer.
Sofia instinctively stepped back—
And without thinking—
She grabbed onto him.
Her fingers clutching his arm tightly.
Adrian stilled.
For a brief moment…
Neither of them moved.
Then slowly…
His hand came up.
Resting lightly on hers.
Not pushing her away.
Not pulling her closer.
Just… there.
“You still want to leave?” he asked quietly.
Her heart pounded violently.
Her eyes fixed on the dark hallway.
The unknown.
The danger.
The truth waiting for her.
And for the first time…
Sofia hesitated.
