Chapter 7: The Message

Chapter 7: The Message (Rewritten Version) I didn’t know when fear turned into curiosity. But it did. And that was the problem. That night, I couldn’t stay in my room. Not after everything Adrian said. Not after the way he looked at me… like I had already crossed a line I didn’t fully understand. The mansion was quiet again. Too quiet. Like it was hiding something. I stepped into the hallway slowly, my footsteps light against the polished floor. Every sound echoed. Every movement felt louder than it should be. I told myself I was just walking. Just clearing my head. But deep down… I knew exactly where I was going. The west wing. My heart started racing the moment I saw it. That hallway again. That door. Closed. Still. Waiting. “Don’t go there.” His voice echoed in my mind. I stopped a few steps away, my breath uneven. This was a bad idea. A terrible idea. I shouldn’t even be here. But something felt different tonight. The air was colder. Heavier. Like the house itself was watching me. I stepped closer. One step. Then another. Until I was standing right in front of the door. My hand lifted slowly. Hovering over the handle. I didn’t touch it. I couldn’t. Not after his warning. Not after the way he said it. But then… I noticed something. My eyes narrowed slightly. There was something on the door. Faint. Barely visible. I leaned closer, my heart pounding. At first, it looked like nothing. Just smudges. Marks left behind over time. But as I stared harder… They began to form something. Words. My breath caught. No… That wasn’t possible. My fingers trembled as I reached out slightly— Not touching the door… Just close enough to see clearly. And then— I read it. “LEAVE.” My heart skipped. The word was faint. Uneven. Like it had been written in a hurry. Or scratched in desperation. A cold chill ran down my spine. “That wasn’t here before…” I whispered. I was sure of it. I would have noticed. Wouldn’t I? My breathing became shallow. Uneven. “Leave…” The word echoed in my head. A warning. A message. But from who? And why here? My eyes moved slowly across the door. And that’s when I saw it. A mark. Right beside the word. At first, I didn’t understand what it was. Then it clicked. A handprint. My stomach dropped. It was faint… But clear enough. Pressed against the surface like someone had tried to push the door open— Or keep it closed. I stepped back immediately. “No…” I whispered. This didn’t make sense. No one comes here. No one is allowed here. So who— A sound cut through my thoughts. Soft. Right behind me. My body went rigid. I stopped breathing. Slowly… I turned around. The hallway was empty. But the feeling— The feeling that I wasn’t alone— It was stronger now. Heavier. Closer. My heart pounded violently in my chest. “I need to go…” I murmured. This was wrong. Everything about this was wrong. I took a step back. Then another. My eyes flicked back to the door one last time. The word was still there. “LEAVE.” And for the first time… I felt like it wasn’t just a warning. It was a choice. One I might not get to make again. I turned quickly and walked away, my steps faster now, my breathing uneven. But even as I left… I could feel it. That door. That message. Following me. Burning in my mind. Because deep down… I knew something now. Something I couldn’t ignore. Whatever was behind that door— Didn’t want me here.
