Chapter 10: The Pull

821 Words
Chapter 10: The Pull Curiosity was becoming a problem. I knew it. But knowing it didn’t stop her. It only made it worse. That night, she found herself standing in the hallway again. The west wing. The same place she told herself she would avoid. The same place Adrian warned her about. And yet… Here she was. Her steps were slower this time. More careful. Like she was afraid the house itself might notice her. The lights above flickered faintly, casting long shadows across the walls. Everything felt… different. Not empty. Not quiet. But watchful. I stopped a few feet away from the door. Her eyes locked onto it instantly. Closed. Still. Unchanged. But she knew better now. Things didn’t have to move to feel alive. Her heart began to beat faster. That word from before echoed in her mind. Leave. She swallowed hard. “I should go back…” she whispered. But her feet didn’t move. Instead, she stepped closer. Again. And again. Until she was standing right in front of it. Her fingers twitched at her sides. She wanted to touch it. Just once. Just to know. But something stopped her. Not fear. Not completely. Something deeper. Like an instinct warning her that once she crossed that line… There would be no going back. A soft sound broke the silence. I froze. Her eyes darted down the hallway. Nothing. But she could feel it again. That presence. That strange, unsettling feeling. Like she was being watched. Her chest tightened. “Who’s there?” she asked quietly. No answer. Only silence. Heavy. Pressing against her. Her gaze slowly returned to the door. And that’s when she noticed it. The handle. It moved. Just slightly my breath caught. “No…” she whispered. She hadn’t touched it. She was sure of it. Her heart pounded violently in her chest as she took a step back. Then— It stopped. Completely still again. Like nothing had happened. Like she imagined it. Her hands began to shake. “This place…” she murmured. “…what is wrong with this place?” Before she could think any further— “Enjoying the view?” The voice came from behind her. Calm. Cold. Too familiar. Sofia spun around sharply. Adrian stood there. Watching her. His expression unreadable. But his eyes— They weren’t calm. They were sharp. Focused. Almost like he had been there longer than she realized. “I wasn’t—” she started quickly. “Don’t lie.” The words cut through her instantly. Her breath caught. “I told you to stay away from this part of the house,” he continued, stepping closer. Each step made her heart race faster. “I didn’t open it,” she said. That much was true. His gaze flicked briefly to the door… then back to her. “Not yet,” he said. A chill ran down her spine.I swallowed hard. “Why?” she asked quietly. “Why is this door so important?” Silence. Adrian stopped in front of her. Close enough to make her breath uneven. “You don’t need to know.” “That’s not an answer.” His eyes darkened slightly. “And you’re asking questions you shouldn’t be asking.” Her chest tightened. “Maybe if you told me the truth—” “The truth,” he interrupted, his voice low, “wouldn’t change anything.” Her heart skipped. “It would change everything,” she whispered. For a moment… Something shifted in his expression. Something softer. More human. But it disappeared just as quickly. Adrian reached out suddenly, his fingers brushing lightly against her wrist. I froze. The touch wasn’t rough. But it wasn’t gentle either. It was… controlled. “You’re standing too close to something you don’t understand,” he said quietly. Her pulse raced. “Then make me understand,” she said. His grip tightened slightly. Just enough. “No.” The word was final. But his hand didn’t let go. And for some reason… She didn’t pull away. The silence between them grew heavier. Charged. Different. Sofia’s heart beat faster—not just from fear now. Something else was there. Something dangerous. Something she didn’t want to name. Adrian’s gaze dropped briefly to her lips… Then back to her eyes. And for a second— Just one second— The world felt like it stopped. Then he stepped back. Just like that. The moment broke. “Go back to your room,” he said. Her chest rose and fell unevenly. “You keep saying that,” she murmured. “And you keep ignoring it.” A faint smirk touched his lips. But his eyes remained cold. I turned slowly, forcing herself to walk away. But even as she left… She could feel it. The pull. The door. The truth waiting behind it. And Adrian. Standing between her… And everything she wasn’t supposed to know.
