Chapter 21: What Was Watching
Sofia shouldn’t have taken that step.
She knew it the moment her foot moved forward.
The moment the air changed.
The moment the silence inside that room felt… wrong.
“Sofia.”
Adrian’s voice was low.
Warning.
But it was already too late.
Because something inside the darkness moved.
Not a shadow.
Not a trick of the light.
Something real.
Sofia froze.
Her breath caught in her throat as her eyes strained against the darkness.
“What… is that?” she whispered.
Her voice barely made it out.
Adrian didn’t answer.
She felt him move slightly in front of her—subtle, controlled—but enough to block more of her view.
Protecting her.
Or hiding something.
She wasn’t sure anymore.
The darkness inside the room seemed to shift again.
Slow.
Unnatural.
Like it wasn’t bound by the same rules as everything else.
Her heart pounded violently.
“Adrian… I can see it,” she said, her voice trembling.
“Don’t look at it.”
The response came instantly.
Sharp.
Serious.
Her brows furrowed.
“What do you mean don’t look at it? It’s right there!”
“I said don’t look.”
Something in his tone made her chest tighten.
Not anger.
Not control.
Fear.
That realization hit her harder than anything else.
Adrian was afraid.
And if he was afraid—
Then whatever was in that room…
Was worse than she imagined.
The air grew colder.
The temperature dropped so suddenly that goosebumps rose along her arms.
Her breath became visible.
Thin.
Uneven.
“What is happening…” she whispered.
The thing inside the room shifted again.
Closer this time.
Sofia’s fingers instinctively grabbed onto Adrian’s shirt from behind.
She didn’t even realize she had moved closer.
Her body reacted before her mind could.
“Stay behind me,” he said quietly.
This time, she didn’t argue.
She couldn’t.
Fear had settled too deeply in her chest.
Adrian took a slow step forward.
The floor creaked beneath his weight.
The sound echoed louder than it should have.
Everything felt amplified.
Every movement.
Every breath.
Every second.
Then—
A shape began to form.
Sofia’s eyes widened.
It wasn’t clear.
Not fully.
But it was enough.
Enough to know…
Something was there.
Tall.
Still.
Watching.
Her breath hitched sharply.
“Adrian…” she whispered.
He didn’t respond.
His entire focus was locked on the figure.
The thing tilted slightly.
Just enough to feel deliberate.
Aware.
Sofia’s stomach twisted.
“It knows we’re here,” she said.
“Yes.”
The answer came quietly.
Calm.
Too calm.
Her grip tightened.
“What does it want?”
A pause.
Then—
“You.”
Her heart stopped.
“What?”
Before she could process it—
The lights flickered violently again.
Once.
Twice.
Then—
Darkness.
Complete.
Sofia gasped, her fingers digging into Adrian’s shirt.
“Adrian!”
“I’m here.”
His voice was closer now.
Steady.
But lower than before.
Focused.
The darkness felt thicker this time.
Heavier.
Like it wasn’t just the absence of light—
But something else entirely.
Something alive.
Sofia’s breathing became uneven.
“I can’t see anything…” she whispered.
“Don’t move.”
Her chest tightened.
“I think it’s closer.”
Silence.
Then—
A sound.
Right in front of her.
Not footsteps.
Not breathing.
Something else.
A soft… dragging sound.
Slow.
Intentional.
Sofia’s heart slammed violently.
“It’s right there,” she whispered.
She could feel it.
Not see it.
But feel it.
A presence.
Cold.
Heavy.
Too close.
Her instincts screamed at her to run.
But her body refused.
She couldn’t move.
Couldn’t think.
Couldn’t breathe properly.
Then—
Something brushed past her.
Sofia gasped sharply, her entire body tensing.
“Did you feel that?”
“Yes.”
Adrian’s voice was different now.
Lower.
Controlled.
But there was something underneath it.
Something dangerous.
The lights flickered again—
And came back on.
Sofia blinked rapidly, her eyes adjusting.
The room was empty.
Completely.
No figure.
No shadow.
Nothing.
Her chest rose and fell quickly as she looked around.
“That’s not possible…” she whispered.
She knew what she saw.
What she felt.
Adrian didn’t move immediately.
His gaze swept the room slowly, carefully.
Checking.
Confirming.
Then finally—
He stepped back.
Putting distance between them and the doorway.
“Close it,” he said.
Sofia hesitated.
“You want me to—”
“Close it.”
This time, she didn’t argue.
She stepped forward slowly, her hands trembling as she reached for the door.
Her heart pounded louder with every inch it moved.
As the door began to close—
She felt it again.
That presence.
Right behind it.
Watching.
Waiting.
Her breath hitched.
Then—
The door shut.
The moment it clicked—
The pressure lifted.
Slightly.
Not completely.
But enough for her to breathe again.
Sofia stepped back quickly, her hands shaking.
“What was that?” she asked.
Adrian finally looked at her.
Really looked at her.
And for the first time—
There was no hiding it.
No control.
No distance.
Just truth.
“That,” he said quietly,
“is why you can’t leave.”
Her heart pounded.
“That doesn’t make sense,” she whispered.
“It will.”
His gaze hardened slightly.
“Because it’s not just in this house.”
A chill ran down her spine.
“What do you mean?”
Silence.
Again.
But this time…
It felt different.
He wasn’t avoiding the truth.
He was choosing how much to reveal.
Slowly.
Carefully.
And that terrified her even more.
“Adrian…” she said softly.
“If I leave… will it follow me?”
A long pause.
Then—
“Yes.”
The word landed like a weight in her chest.
Heavy.
Final.
Her breath caught.
“Why?”
His gaze locked onto hers.
Dark.
Unreadable.
“Because it already knows who you are.”
Her heart skipped.
Cold fear spread through her veins.
“What does that mean?”
But deep down…
She already knew.
This wasn’t random.
This wasn’t coincidence.
This wasn’t just a haunted house.
This was something else.
Something connected to her.
Something that had been waiting—
Long before she ever stepped into that mansion.
And now…
It wasn’t hiding anymore.
