Chapter 5: The Locked Door
I noticed the door on my third day in the mansion.
It wasn’t obvious.
In fact, it was placed so perfectly along the hallway that anyone could easily walk past it without thinking twice.
But I wasn’t just anyone.
Something about it felt… off.
The hallway itself was quiet, lined with tall windows that let in just enough light to soften the cold atmosphere of the mansion. Every other door I had seen was polished, slightly open, or at least clearly part of the house.
This one wasn’t.
It stood at the far end.
Closed.
Still.
Silent.
Like it didn’t belong.
I slowed my steps as I approached it, my heartbeat picking up without any clear reason.
Why does this feel wrong?
I stopped a few feet away, staring at the handle.
It looked normal.
Too normal.
No signs. No markings. No warnings.
And yet…
Adrian’s voice echoed in my head.
“There are parts of this house you are not to enter.”
A chill ran down my spine.
“This must be one of them…” I whispered.
I should walk away.
I knew that.
But curiosity…
Curiosity is a dangerous thing.
My hand lifted slowly, almost as if it had a mind of its own.
Just one touch.
Just to see.
My fingers hovered over the handle.
So close.
And then—
“Don’t.”
The voice came from behind me.
Cold.
Sharp.
Commanding.
I froze instantly.
My heart jumped into my throat as I slowly turned around.
Adrian stood a few steps away, his eyes locked on mine.
Dark.
Unreadable.
Dangerous.
“I wasn’t going to open it,” I said quickly, lowering my hand.
A lie.
And he knew it.
His gaze flicked briefly to the door… then back to me.
“That door,” he said slowly, “does not concern you.”
Something in his tone made my chest tighten.
Not just authority.
Warning.
“I was just curious,” I admitted quietly.
His expression didn’t soften.
“If you want to survive in this house,” he said, stepping closer, “you need to learn the difference between curiosity… and stupidity.”
The words hit harder than they should have.
I swallowed.
“I didn’t think it was that serious,” I said, trying to steady my voice.
Adrian stopped in front of me.
Too close.
“It is,” he said simply.
Silence fell between us.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
But there was something else beneath it.
Something I couldn’t quite name.
“Why?” I asked before I could stop myself.
His eyes darkened slightly.
“You ask too many questions.”
“Maybe you don’t give enough answers,” I shot back.
The moment the words left my mouth, I regretted them.
Adrian’s gaze sharpened.
For a second, I thought I had crossed a line.
Then—
A faint smirk touched his lips.
Dangerous.
Amused.
“You’re either very brave,” he said, “or very reckless.”
My heart pounded.
“Maybe both,” I replied.
Something shifted in his expression.
Something subtle.
But real.
Then it disappeared just as quickly.
“Stay away from this door” he said quietly.
The way he said it sent a strange feeling through me.
Not warmth.
Not fear.
Something in between.
“Or what?” I asked softly.
His gaze held mine for a long moment.
Long enough to make my pulse race.
Then he leaned in slightly.
Close enough that I could feel his presence.
Close enough that I stopped breathing.
“Or you’ll find out why it was closed in the first place.”
A chill ran down my spine.
Before I could respond, he stepped back.
Just like that.
The moment was gone.
“Go back to your room,” he said.
I didn’t argue this time.
I turned and walked away, trying to ignore the way my heart was still racing.
But even as I left…
I could feel it.
That door.
Pulling at me.
Calling to me.
And deep down…
I knew one thing for certain.
Sooner or later—
I was going to open it.
