Zara barely slept that night.
The old photograph lay on her bedside table, its edges worn with age. She had studied every face until dawn, hoping to find a clue she had somehow missed.
Her father.
Damian.
Three unfamiliar men.
One serpent-and-dagger symbol.
None of it made sense.
"Why would Dad hide something like this from me?" she whispered into the silence.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand.
It was Sofia.
Good morning! Don't forget Professor Lorenzo wants everyone at the studio by eight.
Zara glanced at the time and sighed.
For a moment, she considered staying home to search for answers. But she knew hiding wouldn't solve anything.
She slipped the photograph into her handbag before leaving for the academy.
The design studio buzzed with excitement as students worked tirelessly on their competition pieces.
Rolls of silk, lace, and satin covered every table.
Professor Lorenzo walked around the room, quietly observing each student's progress.
When he reached Zara's workstation, his eyes lingered on the sketch before him.
The gown had changed.
The once graceful design now carried sharper lines and darker shades, reflecting the confusion in Zara's heart.
"You've changed your concept," he said gently.
Zara nodded.
"I couldn't stop thinking."
"The mind is noisy."
He smiled kindly.
"But fashion listens to the heart."
She looked down at her sketchbook.
"I don't know what my heart is saying anymore."
Professor Lorenzo placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"Sometimes the answers we seek don't come when we chase them."
"They come when we're ready to face them."
His words stayed with her long after he walked away.
Across the room, Bianca watched the exchange with narrowed eyes.
Everyone admired Zara.
Everyone praised her designs.
It made Bianca furious.
She quietly stepped outside and dialed a familiar number.
"I need more information," she said coldly.
"I don't care how you get it."
"I want every secret Zara Williams is hiding."
Meanwhile...
A private jet landed at Milan Malpensa Airport.
Damian Kingsley stepped onto the runway wearing a charcoal suit and dark sunglasses.
Ethan followed closely behind.
"Our local team has been watching Zara around the clock," Ethan reported.
"No unusual movements?"
"They've noticed the same man near the academy twice."
Damian's expression darkened.
"They're getting bolder."
A black luxury SUV pulled up beside them.
As Damian climbed inside, his phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
You're too late.
Attached was a photograph taken only minutes earlier.
It showed Zara standing inside the academy's design studio.
Someone had been watching her...
From inside the building.
Damian's jaw tightened.
"They have someone at the academy."
Ethan looked at the screen.
"Should we remove her immediately?"
Damian stared at Zara's smiling face in the photograph.
"No."
"If we pull her out now, she'll never trust me."
He slipped the phone into his pocket.
"But whoever is hiding among those students..."
His voice became cold.
"...I'm going to find them before they reach her."
At that very moment, Zara felt an odd sensation.
As if someone was staring directly at her.
She slowly turned toward the studio door.
A man wearing a maintenance uniform stood there, pushing a cleaning cart.
The instant their eyes met...
He smiled.
It wasn't a friendly smile.
It was the smile of someone who already knew exactly who she was.
Zara's smile disappeared.
The maintenance worker held her gaze for only a second before lowering his head and pushing the cleaning cart farther down the hallway.
"Zara?"
Sofia nudged her arm.
"What are you looking at?"
She blinked.
"The cleaner."
Sofia turned toward the hallway.
"What cleaner?"
The corridor was empty.
Zara frowned.
"He was just there."
"You've been under so much stress lately," Sofia said softly. "Maybe you're imagining things."
"No," Zara replied firmly. "I know what I saw."
Before Sofia could respond, Professor Lorenzo clapped his hands to get everyone's attention.
"Everyone, gather around."
The students formed a circle.
"I have an important announcement. Tomorrow, each of you will present your designs before a panel of guest judges. Your presentation will determine who advances to the next stage of the competition."
Excited whispers filled the room.
Bianca smiled confidently.
Zara, however, felt another chill crawl down her spine.
She couldn't shake the feeling that someone wanted more than her failure in the competition.
Someone wanted her distracted.
Across the city, Damian's SUV came to a stop outside the academy.
He remained inside the vehicle, watching students leave the building.
Then he saw her.
Zara laughed at something Sofia said, her smile brighter than he remembered.
For a brief moment, the weight on his heart lifted.
"Five years," he whispered.
"And she's still the most beautiful woman I've ever known."
Ethan glanced at him.
"Do you want to speak to her?"
Damian slowly shook his head.
"Not yet."
"If she sees me now, she'll only remember the man who broke her heart."
His eyes never left Zara.
"But I'll protect her... even if she never knows."
Just then, Damian noticed a man in a maintenance uniform step out of a side entrance.
The man's eyes briefly met his before he disappeared into a waiting van.
Damian's instincts flared.
"Follow that van!"
The driver accelerated immediately.
The van sped through Milan's narrow streets, weaving through traffic.
Inside, the mysterious man removed his cap and smiled into a phone.
"She noticed me."
A distorted voice replied, "Excellent."
"And Damian?"
"He's here."
A pause.
"Good. Everything is happening exactly as planned."
The call ended.
The man looked through the rearview mirror and saw the black SUV following him.
He smiled.
"Come after me, Damian."
"I'll lead you exactly where we want you."
Unaware of the chase unfolding across the city, Zara reached her apartment building.
As she searched her handbag for her keys, she noticed a small package resting against her door.
Her heartbeat quickened.
Another message.
Inside the box was an antique key with a small metal tag attached.
Only three words were engraved on it.
Warehouse 17. Midnight.
Zara stared at the key, her pulse racing.
Was this finally the clue she'd been waiting for...
Or the trap that would change her life forever?
