Chapter 7: The Hidden Truth

1116 Words
The cold evening breeze swept through the streets of Milan as Zara slipped the silver pendant into her coat pocket. The serpent coiled around the dagger felt heavier than its size suggested, as though it carried secrets waiting to be uncovered. Beside her, Sofia glanced at the pendant one last time before looking at Zara. "Let's get inside," she said gently. "Standing in the middle of the street isn't exactly the safest idea after everything that's happened." Zara nodded, but her eyes wandered to the rooftop across the road. The strange feeling of being watched hadn't disappeared. Whoever had dropped the pendant wanted her to find it. But why? The two women entered the cozy café just around the corner from the academy. The warm aroma of freshly baked pastries and roasted coffee wrapped around them, momentarily easing the tension in Zara's chest. They chose a quiet table near the window. As the waiter walked away to prepare their order, Sofia folded her arms across the table. "Now tell me the truth." Zara looked up. "What truth?" "You're frightened." "I'm not frightened." Sofia gave her a knowing look. "You've barely spoken since that motorcycle rode past us." Zara sighed. "I don't understand what's happening anymore." She carefully placed the pendant on the table. "It started with anonymous letters." She paused. "Then someone began watching my apartment." She swallowed hard. "And now this." Sofia picked up the pendant. Under the café lights, the silver gleamed beautifully. "It's old," she murmured. "Very old." She turned it over. Her eyebrows lifted. "There's something engraved here." Zara leaned closer. Tiny letters had been carved into the metal. LV-27. "What does that mean?" Sofia whispered. "I've never seen it before." Before either of them could continue, an elderly waiter approached carrying two cups of cappuccino and a plate of pastries. He placed them on the table with a warm smile. But the instant his eyes landed on the pendant... His smile vanished. His hands trembled. "You..." He stopped himself. Zara noticed the sudden change. "Do you know this symbol?" The old man quickly looked around the café as though checking whether anyone was listening. "I've said too much already." He took a step backward. "You should leave it alone." "Wait." Zara stood. "What do you know?" The man lowered his voice. "Some symbols should never be searched for." Before Zara could ask another question, the café manager called his name from the counter. The old waiter hurried away without another word. Sofia stared after him. "That wasn't fear." "What was it?" "Guilt." Zara looked back at the pendant. Whoever created this symbol had frightened even a man old enough to have seen half the world. Silence settled between them. Neither woman touched her coffee. Outside, rain began falling softly against the café windows. Thousands of miles away... Damian Kingsley stood inside the underground security division beneath Kingsley Group Headquarters. The massive steel doors closed behind him with a heavy clang. Only two people were allowed inside. Damian. And Ethan. The room was lined with locked cabinets containing decades of confidential files. Damian walked straight to the oldest cabinet. His fingerprint unlocked the reinforced drawer. Inside rested a weathered black folder. Stamped across the cover... was the same silver serpent wrapped around a dagger. Ethan's face became serious. "I was hoping we'd never open that file again." "So was I." Damian slowly opened it. The first page contained faded newspaper clippings from over twenty years ago. Disappearances. Business scandals. Unsolved murders. Every headline carried one thing in common. None of the cases had ever been solved. Ethan looked over Damian's shoulder. "They've stayed hidden all these years." "They've been waiting." Damian turned another page. Old photographs filled the file. Businessmen. Government officials. Judges. Powerful people from around the world. Then one particular photograph caught his attention. His breathing stopped. Standing together were five young men. One was Damian's father. Another... was Zara's father. Ethan's eyes widened. "I didn't know they knew each other." Damian's expression darkened. "They were more than acquaintances." "They were brothers in everything except blood." "And then?" Damian slowly closed the file. "Someone betrayed them." His phone suddenly vibrated inside his jacket. Unknown Number. He answered immediately. Neither man spoke. Then a distorted voice echoed through the speaker. "Good evening, Mr. Kingsley." Damian's jaw tightened. "I've been expecting your call." A low laugh answered him. "I know." The voice on the other end was calm, almost amused. "You've done well protecting Zara all these years, Damian. But every secret has its expiration date." Damian's grip tightened around the phone. "If you come anywhere near her, I swear you'll regret it." A soft chuckle echoed through the speaker. "You still think you can stop us? She already has the pendant. Soon, she'll start asking questions you can't answer." The call ended. Damian lowered the phone, his expression grim. "Ethan," he said firmly, "book the first flight to Milan. I won't risk losing her again." Without another word, Ethan nodded and hurried out. Meanwhile, Zara and Sofia stepped out of the café. The rain had stopped, leaving the streets glistening beneath the city lights. As they approached Zara's apartment building, she froze. A cream-colored envelope rested neatly against her door. No stamp. No address. Only her name written in elegant handwriting. With trembling hands, she opened it. Inside was an old photograph. Her breath caught. A younger Damian stood beside her father, both smiling as if they had been close friends. Behind them stood three other men, one of whom wore a bracelet engraved with the same serpent-and-dagger symbol. On the back of the photograph, someone had written six chilling words. The truth died on your wedding day. Zara's heartbeat thundered in her ears. Her father had known Damian all along. Why had no one ever told her? And what really happened on the day that destroyed her life? Across the street, a shadowy figure watched from inside a parked car. He lifted a phone to his ear. "She's beginning to remember." A cold voice replied, "Good. Let her chase the truth." The car slowly pulled away into the darkness, leaving Zara standing at her doorway, unaware that every answer she uncovered would bring her one step closer to a deadly conspiracy—and one step closer to Damian. Tears welled in Zara's eyes as memories of her wedding day came rushing back. Damian's silent apology. The accusing stares. The crushing humiliation. She had spent five years convincing herself she knew the truth, but now doubt crept into her heart. What if everything she believed had been carefully orchestrated? What if Damian had been hiding something far more dangerous than betrayal?
