Chapter 9: Warehouse 17

The antique key lay in Zara's trembling palm. Its bronze surface was worn with age, and the tiny metal tag attached to it bore only three words. Warehouse 17. Midnight. She read the message again, hoping it would somehow change. It didn't. Sofia stared at the key, her face pale. "I don't like this." "Neither do I." "Then don't go." Zara remained silent. For the past few weeks, someone had been leaving anonymous letters, watching her apartment, sending strange symbols, and now... inviting her to an abandoned warehouse. It was obviously dangerous. Yet deep inside, she felt this key wasn't just another threat. It was an answer. She slipped it into her handbag. "I have to know who's behind all this." Sofia immediately grabbed her wrist. "No." "You don't understand." "I understand perfectly." Sofia's voice shook. "Every clue you've received has pulled you deeper into something you know nothing about." "What if this is my only chance to learn the truth?" "What if it's your last chance to stay alive?" The question hung heavily between them. Across Milan, Damian's black SUV screeched around another corner. The white delivery van remained only a few cars ahead. "Don't lose him," Damian ordered. The driver pressed harder on the accelerator. For several tense minutes, the chase continued through the city's narrow streets. Then, without warning, the van entered an underground parking garage. Damian's vehicle followed. The garage was eerily quiet. Concrete pillars stretched endlessly beneath flickering fluorescent lights. The van stood abandoned. Its engine was still running. Ethan cautiously stepped out. "They couldn't have gone far." Damian scanned the area. His instincts screamed that something was wrong. "Be careful." The rear doors of the van slowly swung open. Inside... Nothing. Except a small wooden box. Ethan frowned. "Should I open it?" Damian nodded once. Inside the box rested another silver pendant bearing the serpent wrapped around a dagger. Beneath it lay a folded note. Damian unfolded the paper. His expression instantly darkened. "What does it say?" Ethan asked. Damian handed him the note. Only one sentence had been written in black ink. Midnight. Warehouse 17. Come alone... or bury her. Meanwhile, Zara couldn't concentrate during the afternoon design session. Professor Lorenzo noticed immediately. "You've erased the same sketch three times." "I'm sorry, Professor." "Your hands are designing." He looked into her eyes. "But your mind is somewhere else." She forced a smile. "I'll do better." He nodded kindly before moving to the next student. Across the room, Bianca quietly watched everything. The more she investigated Zara, the stranger her past became. A ruined wedding. Five years of disappearance. An unexpected rise to success. And now... People seemed to be following her. Bianca wasn't jealous anymore. She was curious. As class ended, she secretly slipped into Zara's workspace. A folded newspaper clipping peeked out from Zara's sketchbook. Bianca unfolded it. Her eyes widened. The headline read: BILLIONAIRE WEDDING ENDS IN SCANDAL. BRIDE DISAPPEARS. The accompanying photograph showed Zara in a white wedding dress. Standing beside her... was Damian Kingsley. "So that's who you are," Bianca whispered. Just then, footsteps echoed behind her. She quickly shoved the clipping back into the sketchbook and turned around. Zara stood in the doorway. Their eyes met. For one long moment, neither woman spoke. Then Zara noticed her sketchbook lying open. A flicker of suspicion crossed her face. "What are you doing here, Bianca?" Bianca forced a smile and quickly stepped away from Zara's workstation. "I was looking for Professor Lorenzo," she lied smoothly. "I thought he might be here." Zara's eyes drifted to her open sketchbook before returning to Bianca's face. "This is my workstation." "I know." For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. Then Bianca shrugged casually. "I guess I walked into the wrong area." She brushed past Zara and left the studio without another word. Zara frowned. Something felt off. She walked over to her desk and picked up her sketchbook. As she flipped through the pages, she noticed the folded newspaper clipping wasn't where she had left it. Someone had touched it. Her heart skipped a beat. "Bianca..." she whispered. Night fell over Milan. Heavy clouds covered the moon as Zara stood by her apartment window, the antique key resting in her hand. The clock on the wall read 11:15 p.m. She remembered Sofia's warning. "Don't go." She remembered the message on the photograph. "The truth died on your wedding day." If Warehouse 17 held the answers, could she really ignore it? After several minutes of silence, she made her decision. She slipped the key into her pocket, grabbed her coat, and quietly left the apartment. Several streets away, Damian sat inside his SUV outside an abandoned industrial district. His eyes remained fixed on the entrance of Warehouse 17. "It feels too quiet," Ethan muttered. Damian nodded. "They want us here." His phone vibrated. A security officer spoke urgently through the earpiece. "Sir... we've just seen Zara leave her apartment." Damian's expression changed instantly. "Where is she going?" "Based on her route..." A brief pause followed. "...she's heading toward Warehouse 17." "No..." Damian's heartbeat quickened. "Drive. Now!" The SUV roared to life, speeding through the empty streets. Zara reached the old warehouse minutes later. The rusted building stood alone beside the river, its broken windows reflecting flashes of lightning. She looked around. No one. Only silence. With trembling fingers, she slid the antique key into the old padlock. Click. The door slowly creaked open. Cold air rushed out from the darkness inside. She took one cautious step forward. Then another. Suddenly... The warehouse lights snapped on all at once. Zara froze. In the center of the room stood a single chair. Resting on it was a black envelope with her name written across the front. Before she could move, the heavy warehouse door slammed shut behind her. Bang! She spun around and pulled desperately at the handle. It wouldn't open. A familiar male voice echoed from somewhere inside the warehouse. "Zara... don't touch the envelope!" Her entire body stiffened. She knew that voice. The voice she had tried to forget for five long years. "Damian...?" Zara's voice came out as little more than a whisper. Her heart pounded violently against her ribs as she searched the darkness for him. Every emotion she had buried over the past five years came rushing back at once—love, anger, confusion, and heartbreak. She took one hesitant step forward, her fingers tightening around the black envelope. Before she could speak again, the warehouse lights flickered violently, and a loud metallic clang echoed through the building, sending a chill down her spine.
