Chapter 2 – The Night in Vrindavan

325 Words
After leaving, I thought freedom would taste sweet. I moved to Vrindavan it a city in Uttar Pradesh, India where I found a job as a receptionist in a small hotel. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was mine. For the first time, I paid my own rent, cooked my own meals, and returned every night to a tiny 1BHK flat that felt more like home than the house I grew up in. Every evening, after finishing work, I walked past the temple, letting the sound of bells calm the storm inside me. Life was simple, ordinary, and I thought maybe—just maybe—I could start over. But fate had other plans. One night, as I returned from work, the air felt heavier than usual. The streets were dim, quiet, almost too quiet. Then, out of nowhere, a gunshot pierced the silence. I froze. My heart hammered in my chest as the echo bounced off the narrow lanes. A few seconds later, I saw them—cars speeding past, their headlights slicing through the darkness. The men inside wore black coats, their faces hard and unreadable. My breath caught in my throat. And then I saw him. Not one of them—but someone left behind. A man standing in the shadows, his sharp eyes locked directly on me. His stare was intense, unblinking, like he could see right through me. Fear rooted me to the spot. For a moment, I couldn’t move, couldn’t think. His gaze was too strong, too dangerous. My pulse roared in my ears. Then instinct took over. I turned and ran, my footsteps echoing against the empty street, not stopping until I reached my flat and slammed the door shut behind me. But even in the safety of my little home, I couldn’t shake the feeling. His eyes followed me into my dreams. And deep inside, I knew—that night in Vrindavan was only the beginning.
