As usual, I was working at the reception desk. The hotel was unusually busy today — a wealthy NRI had booked almost all the rooms, and the entire staff was on their toes trying to keep everything perfect. The phone kept ringing, guests were coming in and out, and I was trying to stay composed, but my mind was still trapped in yesterday’s event… and those eyes.
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t stop replaying that moment in my head. It was as if those eyes had left an invisible mark on me — deep, mysterious, and unsettling.
While I was lost in thought, an elderly lady walked up to the reception. She looked graceful — dressed in a soft pastel saree, diamonds glinting faintly around her neck. Her eyes were kind, and her voice, gentle.
“Excuse me, dear,” she said softly. “Could you please tell me the way to the lobby?”
I quickly gathered myself and smiled. “Of course, ma’am. Just go straight from here and take the first left — you’ll see the lobby entrance there.”
She nodded gratefully and began walking in that direction. But then, her phone rang. She stopped midway and started talking to someone, completely unaware of her surroundings.
That’s when I noticed it — the large chandelier above her was hanging loosely, its hook half-broken. The frame swayed dangerously with every vibration from the nearby air conditioner. My heart skipped a beat.
“Ma’am! Please move aside!” I shouted, already rushing toward her.
She turned in surprise, but before she could react, I reached her and pulled her away just as the chandelier came crashing down. It hit the floor with a loud thud, scattering pieces of glass everywhere.
Pain shot up my leg — a sharp sting. I looked down and saw a thin line of blood where a glass shard had grazed me.
The lady gasped. “Oh dear! You’re hurt!”
I forced a small smile. “It’s okay, ma’am. You’re safe — that’s what matters.”
She looked at me with warmth and gratitude. For a moment, her expression softened in a way that reminded me of someone… but I couldn’t quite place who.
Little did I know — this small act of saving her would soon change everything that was about to unfold in my life.
