Chapter 54

The US took no time in leading the board with the most medals in the first week of the Olympic Games. With defeating New Zealand 2-0, taking down France 1-0, then knocking Columbia out 2-1, it was once again time to face Sweden. The rivalry between these two countries had become the topic of soccer discussion. Sweden found themselves playing a game of sink or swim against a team they had yet to beat since January of 2015. "This rivalry is one of the many reasons we love the game." "It really is! I love absolutely love watching these two teams play one another!" "You know, I'm a little worried about the Americans because it looks like Jill has gone with youth over experience and with a team like Sweden that's a big no no." The United States was up 1-0 when Massy came back in, but the game was still very much touch-and-go and Sweden had mad worthy attempts at scoring goals. Jill's plan to go youth over experience had changed by the second half. With Abby Wambach retired Massy was officially Jill's go to forward. At the 86th mark of the game US needed to seal the deal, at this moment a tie game was unacceptable. She caught the ball on a breakaway and suddenly the must-win match was placed on her shoulders. With two minutes remaining she looked to her left and right, the only people that surrounded her wore bright yellow uniforms. The decision came easy and before she could possibly understand what she did, America was 2-0 with one minute left Massy pushed her team to the semifinals with her first Olympic goal. Practice and meetings forced Odell to watch the Olympic Games when he could, updates at Massy's every moment were sent directly to his phone, along with txt messages and live footage of the game from his mother. Conference room A at the Quest Diagnostic Center had been turned from a quarterback and wide receiver meeting to full on watching USA vs Sweden, even Eli found himself distracted and paying more attention to the game. With an advancement to the finals would come another week of separation, but that eagerness to have Massy back by his side eased, seeing her reaction to winning and competing on a different platform warmed his heart, seeing her at her best out him at his best only wanting to match her success. The Waldorf Towers filled with conversation famous magician David Blaine had brought his amazing show to New York for two nights, people spoke at their own tables as they ate dinner. The city that never sleeps had a way of bringing celebrities that you'd never thought to see under the same roof. "You just gone spend your whole twenties engaged?" Brad frowned as he asked Odell the question. Odell placed his glass back on the table, then ran his hand through his blonde curls. "I don't know, it's up to her, I know plenty of people that stay engaged for years." He shrugged his shoulder. "As long as I'm with her I'm happy." "She going to be your baby mother before she's your wife." Brad laughed Odell smiled as well, the thought of Massy having his kids and the sound of Brad's Australian accent mixed with the struggle of getting use to speaking with braces was comedy. Odell was silent for a moment, he shrugged again. "I don't see the pr..." "Hey stranger." A petite voice interrupted Odell mid sentence Brad looked behind Odell his eyes widened in surprise. "Aww shit." He said under his breath. Odell's nostrils flared at the sound of the women's voice, his eyes nearly rolled to the back of his head, just the thought of her standing behind him as close as she was gave him a headache. "Mind if I sit down?" Her voice hit Odell's ears again, he picked up his glass of water and took a sip taking his time to answer, he looked over at Brad as he slightly shifted in his seat uncomfortably. "Yea, I do mind." Odell said back placing his glass back on the table. "I gotta go to the bathroom." Brad lied just to finding any excuse to leave the awkward situation. "Nah, don't!" Odell quickly said. "I might need you as a witness, just in case NOTHING happens." He said looking at Sophie out the corner of his eyes, his nostrils still flared and his lips pressed together. Brad looked down trying to hide his grin from the shady comment Odell made. "Seriously, we're still on that? I said I was sorry and I took all the false charges as well as payed to make sure you remained with a clean record. I did you a favor." She said scowling down at him. Odell could feel his anger boiling over just that quick, the nerve, the audacity, the boldness of her. This was not the Sophie he once knew and dated and broke up with three years ago, the quiet timid victim act had some how been knocked out her head and replaced by a overstepping b***h. Either way Sophie was great at poking and pushing people's buttons no matter what role she played. "ME A FAV....." He stopped realizing his voice was louder than he'd like it to be. He looked forward and picked up the glass again taking another sip to calm himself. He swallowed and sighed. "What are you doing here? why are you over here? Why are you this close to me?" Sophie walked around the table and sat down on the other side of Odell. "Well I do play for a New York team therefore causing me to live in New York, but anyway, I'm here with a friend and I saw you so I thought I'd come over and tell you congratulations on your engagement! You're a really lucky guy, you know getting to play on a team with Ace I've really gotten to know her, she's a great girl." Odell rolled his eyes and finally looked over at Sophie, even looking at her along with hearing her voice made his skin crawl. "Thank you..." He said not knowing what else to say, the table fell in silence as Brad and Odell waited for her to leave. "Was there something else you needed Sophie? Are you done?" She took a sigh and straightened her posture. She looked down at Odell's left hand. "You ever wonder why when people get engaged the woman has to wear the ring while her man is ringless, giving off the illusion that he's not engaged." Sophie ran her index finger along his left ring finger. "Sophie get up from my table." He snatched his hand from under her's and leaned back, looking forward no longer giving her his attention. "Still the same asshole. Some things never change. I just hope you and Ace's long distance relationship works better than ours did." She said giving the most genuine smile she could muster up. Odell frowned scrunching up his face in confusion. "Her and I aren't in that kind of relationship." "Oh! You haven't heard the great news!?" Even her laugh was annoying. Odell sat up straight turning his attention back to Sophie. His frown showed her he wanted to know more, even Brad looked confused giving Sophie his attention. "Your fiancé is getting traded! To Kansas!" She had a grin comparable to the Jokers. "You enjoy the show and your evening babe, it was good seeing you again Brad." She stood up from the table, and hugged Odell from the side, he was too much in shook to push her off, and Brad was in too much shook to say bye let alone realize she was leaving.
