Chapter 10

974 Words
Odell had one of two decisions to make. Either have the vet put Tzar down or let the cancer take him naturally, but then he would have to see his dog suffer and deteriorate from malignant lymphoma, a type of skin cancer that had formed a large tumor on his lymph nodes.  Heather leaned over the couch arm and laid her head on Tzar's. The room was quiet, only muffled voices from random people as they shuffled past the private room. Massy did the same, curling her petite body on the couch around his. Odell hesitantly opened the door poking his head in not wanting to see his dog in the current situation. Heather stood up and pulled him into a hug but like Koba and Dre, Massy didn't budge not even to greet Odell, she remained curled around him her face next to his and her eyes closed. Tzar wasn't her's but he had grown to be hers. Heather said nothing allowing Odell to step passed her. The closer he got to Massy he could see her shoulders raise up and down realizing she was crying.  Massy felt his large hand slide up the middle of her back, he leaned over and placed one hand on the back of the couch and hovered over his fiancée and dog. Odell knew the decisions he had to make, but he wasn't willing to make any of them, neither decision was what he wanted to hear. Massy stood up and wrapped her arms around Odell's waist.  "I know you don't want to." Massy whispered leaning into him. Odell covered his face with his hand, hiding the tears that began running down his face.  "I can't." He said back to her shaking his head.  "I know you don't want to, but you can't let him suffer." She said back. Odell burrowed his face in Massy's neck shaking his head harder.  "I can't! I can't do that Ace! I can't" Odell lifted his head. Massy could tell he was beginning to panic, his breathing got shallow and sped up as if he was trying to catch his breath. His hands began shaking and grew clammy. Odell felt as if the walls were closing in on him, he knew he had to put his dog down but he couldn't handle the pressure. Heather stepped back towards the door allowing Massy to take over, as hard as it was, as bad as she wanted to hold her son, it was Heather's way of letting her take on her new role. Odell's other half, his better half. Heather would always be his mother and she had and will have her time, but it was Massy's turn to handle situations.  "Hey! Hey!" Massy grabbed his hand and placed it on her chest, she grabbed the back of his neck and pulled his head down to her pressing his forehead to hers. Both their eyes closed Massy did what she had to do to calm him down. "Odell! Slow down. Breathe with me, calm down and breathe in and out." Odell's hand rested on her chest, her hand on his, feeling how her breathing was long and steady. "Follow my breathing." Tears still dripped from his eyes but his breathing began to mimic hers.  Massy released her hand from the back of his neck and reached for Heather's hand. She locked her hand with hers and, she took her hand from Odell's and reached over placing it on Tzar's stomach. Odell didn't move, his hand still on her chest and the other on her hip, his forehead still pressed to hers and his eyes closed completely obviously to what Massy was about to do, Heather slightly smiled and closed her eyes already knowing. "Our Heavenly Father, I come to you asking that you take Tzar into your hands and continue to shower him with the unconditional love that we once showed. That you take him with you where he is healthy, where he no longer suffers, where he is no longer weak. Father we know you will never put more on us than we can bare, but I come to you in this time of need to ask you for your strength. My Odell is weary, and I ask that you give him your strength, I ask that you continue to guide him to wake up every morning and smile, guide him to continue to love, to continue to learn, to not give up. I ask that you take the hurt and pain from both my boys and replace it with your light and pure love. In Jesus name I pray. Amen."   Odell opened his eyes and raised his head from hers in shock, he frowned looking down at her as if he had never seen her before. He had never heard her so much as even say the word pray let alone give a prayer. Massy and Odell may have been similar but they were also very different at the same time. Heather had raised Odell with a strong belief in God and all thanks was to him. Odell had never been scared to show his belief in God, his many posts on i********: reflected his beliefs. Massy wasn't, she wasn't raised with that strong of a belief. The only time her family ever prayed was during large family functions as they blessed the food. Massy knew Odell's upbringing and although it wasn't the same as hers, she respected it.  Another layer to Massy had been pulled away. A less detached Massy, not as cold or as emotionless. The serious and  sentimental side, understanding. She had calmed him down the same way he calmed her down before the pressure of a World Cup Game. Although the situations weren't the same, but no matter what the situation was they had each others backs.
