Skylar POV.
I arrived at the driveway of my home to find that the party was mostly held inside. Before I could even get to the door, I could hear the house bustling with noise from the party. From the number of cars in the driveway, it looked like Rain had invited most of her friends from school. This only made me even more anxious not to be seen here. Rain loves humiliating me in front of our classmates, which made me wonder if I should walk in through the front door. I made it up to the doorsteps and paused for a moment. I really don't want to open this door. Could it be possible to have a panic attack just by doing one gesture-one act? I was genuinely afraid to go inside, and I would rather be outside or literally anywhere but here. I reached for the nob and turned it slowly as the booming of the music inside continued. Perhaps everyone will be so busy that they won't know I'm here. I slipped into a crowd of people eating, drinking, and socializing, hoping my presence was unknown. Keeping my eyes near the floor, I caught a glimpse of the party area. Most of it was out back on the patio, but a good number of people were in the living room and kitchen that led out to the patio. The living room was decorated with all kinds of pink decorations and balloons. There were two balloon numbers (18) in the back of the room, along with a mountain of presents that were for, no doubt, Rain. All this for their perfect little angel who only got grades because I did her homework, who only has friends because she bullies others, and because she thinks she is a princess. I shook my head silently as I struggled to get through, heading toward the basement. I could only hope that Jennifer was here so I could get something to eat this time. I often didn't eat on my birthday because my stepmom or my dad would lock me in the basement until the next morning. Rain would always complain to them that I was jealous of her friends and was afraid that I would do something and, with sad batted eyelashes, she got what she wanted: me out of the way. Oh, but don't worry, she was never done with me on her special day. Rain was never really satisfied until she mocked and flaunted the love of her parents in my face. She would often come downstairs to the laundry room in the basement only for one thing: to rub it in my face. I dared not show any aggression or defiance in my attitude, or I would be beaten badly.
I arrived at the driveway of my home to find that the party was mostly held inside. Before I could even get to the door, I could hear "Is that you, Skylar," that voice that sounded like nails on a chalkboard caused me to wince. It was Rain, rushing over to meet up with me. Oh no, this isn't good. Alice is coming with her too. Alice was Rain's minion. She did everything Rain told her to do like a good little b***h. I don't know if she hated me because I was less willing to do whatever Rain said or that I was Rain's half-sister. In my opinion, she could have her as a sister. From the moment I was born, she has been anything but a sister to me. However, Rain loves showing everyone that she is a good sister and only her close minions know the truth. I attempted to bypass the crowds in the dining and living rooms. She managed to run up to me and block my path to the hallway. Her long fake-blond hair reaching shoulder-length, was pushed behind her shoulders to show off her two-piece dress. She wore a rose-gold halter neckline top with a matching mini skirt. I rolled my eyes. She certainly didn't leave anything up to the imagination. She's only 18, but she looks like a slut at the nightclub. I guessed that Mr. Beyers hadn't seen Rain's outfit yet. I ignored her and tried to walk past her when Alice blocked my path.
Okay, I guess we're doing this then.
She smiled her fake innocent grin and attempted to hug me in front of her guests. Oh, she's good at acting. Instead of trying to pretend she is a genius daughter, she should be an actress. At least she won't fall flat on her ass once I leave. I sneered inside and bit my lip. Rain knew I was coming to work, so my clothes were not as clean as everyone else.
"Sister! How was work today? " Geez, you look a mess," Rain wrinkled up her nose at seeing my grease-stained uniform. I rolled my eyes. She was doing it again. I said nothing and stared at her, waiting for them to leave my way. They would only block my way if I attempted to go around again. If only I could escape this crazy area and go to my cot to rest. I honestly wasn't in the mood for Rain's antics today. Eleven years. That's how long it's been since Rain and her mother came into my life and sucked all the goodness dry. Eleven years of no birthdays, Christmases or vacations. Nothing and now she comes up to me like we have been buddies for a decade. I sighed heavily and rolled my eyes.
