CHAPTER 31FOX AND HOUNDS
It would have been a beautiful thing for a disinterested man to see the manner in which the leader organized his party. With half-a-dozen words he had the searchers organized; and presently the sound of the horses of two of the men was retreating through the woods. Jimmy was drawn back into the shadows among the trees by Jake and Gregg.
In the meantime the rest, organized as a search party, split into three sections and began to comb the woods from top to bottom, working in twisting spirals from the clearing and around the hill. Nothing escaped them. Bull’s-eye lanterns with each section of the search party sent probing shafts and knives of light gliding among the branches.
Where there was any doubt a man hastily climbed up and scanned the recesses of the trees.
