CHAPTER 27A GAGGED MAN
Barry moved away from Judge Chaney in a line parallel with the front of the house, as though intending to circle around it; but the moment he was well on his way he angled off that line and sprinted at full speed back to the spot where he had left Tom Willow.
The latter was in the saddle as his chief came up. “Are they on the way?” demanded Tom in a shaken voice.
“Get out of the saddle!” said Barry. “We haven’t much time. I’ve been swapping lies with the Judge. His lies were a little bigger than mine, but I think that I may be able to do a little better guessing than he can do, in the wind-up.”
Willow stood beside him. “You gotta remember, chief,” said he, “that when a rub comes and there’s any galloping, this here mule ain’t as fast as a horse.”
