“Drive him home and tell him to make sure he resumes work tomorrow or else it would mean he breached the contract and would have to take responsibility for the consequences of a contact breach” Morgan Informed the guard who had asked her what they were to do with Jason.
In less than an hour later, Jason was dumped on the front door of his wife’s parents house.
His mother and father in-law were at home but dared not to come outside for fear of the men in black suits dropping of a half dead man on their porch, so they stayed inside until the Rolce-roy was out of site.
They both opened the door to see the ghastly state of their live in son-in-law. Mrs stone spat in disgust.
“Look Oliver, someone’s got their ass what n trouble,” Mrs stone mocked.
“He looks very beat up, think he’ll make it?” Mr Oliver stone asked his wife who used her leg to nudge the unconscious Jason.
“His not moving” she confirmed, smiling slightly. She waved her hand across her face severally “Huff, what's that awful smell?
“I’ll drag him in, we don’t want the neighbors calling the cops on us”,Mr oliver said and dragged Jason’s battered body into the living room.
“I’ll check if he has some money on him, I need to get me that dress I saw on that fashion site, every penny counts.”Mrs stone said.
Mrs stone bent down and ransacked Jason’s shirt and pant in search of any money she can find.
“Help me,”a small whisper left Jason’s battered and blooded mouth.
Mrs Oliver was shocked and surprised as she had not expected him to speak.
She contained herself and replied.
“Where you paid any money from work today? It’s the end of the week, where you paid your allowance?”
Jason reached down to his inner pocket in his pants and retrieved fifty dollars, handing it over to her.
Her eyes lit up, she snatched the money from his bloodied hands and moved away from him.
“Please help” Jason muttered again.
“This will do, I'll buy more than just the dress with this.”Mrs stone said.
“What happened to you boy? I bet you were trying to steal from your boss, their guards brought you back home.” Mr stone accused in a nonchalant tone.
Jason shook his head from side to side wanting to let his father in law know that he had not stolen anything from his boss.
“You only got this job over a week ago, and now this, I knew it was too good to be true, the likes of you didn't even deserve to be given audience by the Hartfords, the almighty Hartford.”Mr stone said ignoring the fact that Jason had just denied his allegation.
“I hope our daughter sees you for what and who you truly are, not just a nobody but also a shameless thief.”Mrs stone cruely said.
They were about to leave him and go on about their way when Marilyn walked through the door. Her eyes lit up at the strange figure on the floor, she gasped at the sight before her and ran to her parents not recognising who it was at first.
“Who is that?”she asked in panic after her mother embraced her.
“That is your wretched husband,” her father replied.
On hearing that, Marilyn was shocked and ran swiftly to inspect her husband who she had thought was a total stranger.
“What happened to him?”She asked shooting accusing eyes at her parents.
Her mother knelt beside her, making sure she did not touch Jason even by mistake.
“Your husband has not just proven to be a worthless pauper but also a shameless thief, the Hartford guards dropped him off like a piece of garbage at our door step before they left, if he was not your husband, am sure Oliver would have helped them finish him off,”Mrs stone brutal words hurt both Jason and his wife who was no longer listening to them but calling 911 for aid.
“You'll be fine my love, an here now, hang in there.”Marylin whispered to her husband who was whizing from pain, his breath very haggard.
A few minutes later the ambulance arrived and Jason was transferred to the whitstone hospital, before they got there, he had lost consciousness again holding on to the only soothing words he had heard from his wife's lips. He would make sure to survive, if not for anyone, but for his Marilyn.
“He has sustained a serious head injury, am afraid we would have to resort to surgery as soon as possible,”The doctor informed Marilyn whoes eyes were red already from crying.
“Surgery? We don't have money for surgery,”she cried.
Is there nothing else that can be done?”She asked.
“No, the doctor replied, the surgery would cost you $80000 dollars. We will stabilize him the best we can to give you time to raise the money, if you can get half of the of the payment we can start treatment immediately.”
“I don't even have a quarter of that,”Marilyn wailed, flinging her hands in the air like it was the doctor’s fault that her husband was in this state.
The doctor excused himself, certified that she had gotten the information he wanted her to know.
Marilyn looked through the glass door of the room where Jason was being stabilized and tears streamed down her eyes. Where was she going to get such a large sum of money? She walked dogs and cared for people’s cat to make small change to support herself and her family.
Being a college dropout because of lack of funds as her parents had sworn that they didn’t have the money to continue sponsoring her dream to become a zoologist.
She left the hospital after a long stare at her half conscious husband, she took a taxi home.
She got home and pleaded with her parent to help her sort the bills and they rebooked her for having the guts to even suggest such a thing to them.
“You will not mention his name in this house ever again,Mrs stone began. With what you have just told us it means he won't make it if we don't intervene. Can't you see Marilyn that this is a god sent opportunity for you to do away with that bastard?”
“Please mummy, please daddy, if you truly love me, you will help me, please help me so Jason can live.”
“There was never a future for the both of you, can't you see that? Her father asked but didn’t wait for a reply before he and his wife walked out on her leaving her in a state of total helplessness.
Marilyn went to bed that night with a heavy heart, she did love Jason, but her hands were tied, she had no money, she too was broke because all the money she made went to her parents, they took it from her and her husband because they both lived with them.
She sobbed into the night and just as sh was about to fall asleep, a phoned dinged.
Ding. Ding.
Jason's phone lit up from the bed stand. Since he started work as a gardener at the Harfords home, he often left his phone behind because since it was stated in his contract that he was to bring no electrical device to work.
She knew the password his phone so she typed it in and opened the phone.
The message was from Jason’s boss.
It read “Make sure to resume work tomorrow, if you have the courage, I might be impressed and increase your salary.”
Marilyn knew this has to be Mrs Hartford as she was Jason's direct employer.
Marilyn understood the work of a gardener and was confident she would be able to replace her husband so she decided to visit the Hartford home tomorrow and explain that her husband was in no physical shape to resume work and discuss how she could replace her husband until he got better.
Maybe the woman would take pity and sort her husband’s medical bills, she thought, ignoring the allegations that her parents had accused Jason of.
Jason was a just man, he would never stoop low to steal so she hoped that whatever it was, they would at-least let her take his place until he got better, if he got better.
