The following morning she called the hospital to confirm if Jason was still alive and after they confirmed that he was breathing but his condition could worsen if there was no intervention. She explained that she would reach them about the surgery money as soon as she could.
She took a cab to the Harford home, the top five richest people in the city.
The Hartfords were deathly and filthy rich with there numerous rumors about their ruthlessness.
She was anxious but above all she was desperate. In less than an hour time, Marylins cab stopped at the gate that would lead to the Hartford home, it looked like an estate from the outside, somehow felt illegal for one family to own such a large dispersed property.
She could not even make it past the gates, the security man there threatened to shoot her of she came any closer than where she stood.
“I'm the wife of Jason, the gardener, please let me in so I can explain myself,”She shouted off the top of her lungs.
“I'll count to five the guard shouted through a small microphone. If you don't turn and start walking in the opposite direction, i will shoot.”
“But….
One. Two. Three.
Marilyn began to pick up pace and run in the opposite direction from the mansion. Just then a large convoy of expensive cars where coming towards her at a fast speed, she was dumbfounded for a second like a deer caught in the headlights before she gained courage to know that she was the one in the driveway for the cars, she dashed away to the walk way, throwing herself unto the walkway that she had not noticed.
The moving vehicle stoped and two large men in black shades and suit came out and forged towards her.
Before she knew what was happening, the two guards bundled her up and threw her in the back seat of one of the cars, blindfolded.
……….
“What is this Mark? You promised not to bring any of your play things to our married home,”Mrs Hartford complain to her husband for the unannounced guest in their home.
“Who is she? She asked.
“You tell me, she claims to be the gardeners wife,”Mr Hartford replied.
Morgans eyes widened. Was he dead? She thought to her self.
“Remove the blindfold,” she commanded one of the guards.
“Speak young lady.
“My, my husband is in a critical situation,”Marylin began, shaking from fear.
“He came home all beat up and bleeding yesterday, he is in the hospital and needs surgery. Since his contract says he has to be at work every day, I want to stand in for him until I can get enough money to treat him.”
“Ahh, a poor wife caring for her poor husband, one of the many things that rich and poor people don't have in common,”Mr Hartford said, ignoring his wife's blank expression.
“You may leave, Morgan began knowing she was the cause of jasons predicament. “The contract is dissolved, you and your husband need not worry about getting sued.”
“But I don't mind, I can do the job,” Marilyn tried to persuade her.
“What is it with you? Did you not hear me the first time? Guards, kick her out , she stinks like my cat’s poo.”
The guards were about to bundle Marilyn out when Mr Hartford spoke.
“Leave her alone, I need a cleaner for my study, your husbands contract has been dissolved like my wife said, but ill draft another one for you, maybe then you will be able to help your husband,”Mr Hartford said, a devilish grin in his face.
“Yes please, I'll work,”She replied, quickly agreeing.
Mrs Hartford kept her mouth shot, she was a spiteful woman but she knew better than to question her husband.
“Work starts tomorrow. You may leave.”
Marilyn was seen out of the mansion after they gave her a card to bring with her when coming the following day.
………….
“Where have you been all day, I have been worried about you? Mrs stone embraced her daughter who seemed excited.
“I have great news,” she said with glee.
“Whatever could it be? Is the bastard dead? No news would make me happier.”
Marilyn frowned. “No he's not dead, at least I hope not.”
“Then what is it?”She asked.
“I got a job as a cleaner at the Hartford home. Can you imagine?”
With that information in the air, Mrs stone began to scheme ways to get her daughter to marry a billionaire from the mansion, she believed even the lowest guard at the mansion would be a hundred times better than who Jason could ever be.
“I hope you will be smart and use this opportunity to get yourself out of poverty,” was the first thing she said to her daughter.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean finding a rich man in that mansion, maybe even Hartford himself, divorcing your wretch of a husband and being happy for the rest of your life.”
Don’t you want to have a day go by in your life when you don't have to think of what you would eat? Or maybe dressing in expensive dresses like other girls who are not even half as beautiful as you are? I so much despise you for disobeying your father and I order to marry Frank, the second son of the Wilson family. When was the last time you had data to surf the internet?”
“I can't remember,” Marilyn replied.
Mrs stone scuffed, “let me update you, look, he has two boys now with his wife he married after you refused to marry him, his wife travels around the world for pass time, buys whatever she pleases, she is popularly known for spending money lavishly but you would rather rot with your nameless husband.”
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I hope you don't blow it and die a wretch”Mrs stone excused herself after giving Marilyn a small piece of her mind.
Marilyn sat staring at the phone screen her mother had handed to her. She scrolled through franks wife page which showcased how lavish her life was. Marilyn sighed, put the phone down and dialed the hospital.
There was no response, she dailed again and still no response.
For the first time in her life she hoped for Jason to be out of her life, she had to move on, however hard the decision to do so may be.
