Chapter 2: The First Companion and a Dungeon's Call
Lyra’s emerald eyes were narrowed, not with hostility, but with a deep, probing curiosity. The ambient noise of the market seemed to fade away under her intense gaze. Kaito’s mind raced. Explain? How do I explain a cosmic cheat code that reincarnated me into a stabbed orphan’s body?
The System, ever helpful, provided a prompt.
[Suggestion: Partial Truth is the best currency. Attribute your actions to a ‘unique magic’ or a ‘divine blessing’. The bond she feels is real; you need not fabricate it, only frame it.]
Kaito took a steadying breath, channeling a confidence he didn’t fully feel. “My name is Kaito,” he said, deciding to shed the old identity of ‘Kaelan’ entirely. “And I think… I think I have a talent for being in the right place at the right time. Or perhaps fate puts me there. It’s a power I’m still learning to understand. It must have been what guided me to help this man,” he gestured to Gregor, “and it seems it’s what called you here.”
It was vague, mystical, and hopefully enough to satisfy an elf who lived in a world of magic.
Lyra studied him for a long moment, her ears twitching slightly. She glanced at the two thugs still struggling on the ground, one still trying to pry his glued eyelids apart. A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched her lips.
“A ‘talent for being in the right place’ is a convenient power for a human to have,” she remarked, her tone dry. “Yet, the pull I felt was undeniable. It was a beacon, cutting through the mundane world. I am Lyra of the Silverwood, though… I am exiled from my kin. I follow my own path now. It seems that path has, for the moment, intersected with yours.”
[Lyra’s Loyalty has increased from ‘Neutral’ to ‘Inquisitive’.]
Progress.
“An exile?” Kaito asked, gently probing.
Her expression tightened. “A story for another time. For now, you have coin, and I have questions that require answers. I propose a temporary partnership. I will accompany you until I understand this connection. In return, my bow and my knowledge of this land are at your disposal.”
**[New Quest Generated: ‘Forge a True Bond’!**

**Reward:** 500 EXP, ‘Sylvan Archery’ Skill Book (User can learn), Lyra’s personal questline unlocked.
**Failure:** Lyra leaves. Harem Roster remains empty. A sad and lonely path awaits.]
Kaito didn’t need the system’s warning. The thought of this fierce, beautiful elf walking away was motivation enough. “A partnership sounds perfect,” he agreed. “I could use a guide. And a friend.”
He offered her a genuine smile, one that seemed to surprise her. Elves, he guessed, weren’t big on casual friendliness.
“First,” Kaito said, turning practical, “we need supplies. And maybe a place to stay that doesn’t involve alleyways.”
With Gregor’s generous reward of fifty gold coins, they were far from wealthy, but no longer destitute. Lyra, true to her word, proved an invaluable guide. She led him to a modest but clean inn called The Wandering Wisp, where a few silver coins secured them two small rooms for the week. She then helped him barter for essentials: a sturdy traveler’s tunic and trousers, a worn but serviceable shortsword, a waterskin, and a pack to carry it all.
As they walked, Kaito couldn’t resist pulling up his status screen. He’d gained a level!
Name: Kaito Race:Human Level:1 (12/200 EXP) Title:The Zero (-50% Reputation gain) —> Slightly Less of a Zero (-25% Reputation gain)
Health: 50/50 Mana:20/20
Attributes: Strength:5 Agility:6 Vitality:5 Intelligence:9 Wisdom:6 Luck:2
The increase was small, but he felt it. The world seemed clearer, his movements more sure. The ‘Slightly Less of a Zero’ title was still insulting, but it was an improvement he’d take.
Back in the common room of the inn, sharing a simple meal of stew and bread, Lyra finally asked the question he knew was coming. “So, Kaito-with-a-unique-talent. What is your goal? Now that you are not being stabbed in an alley, what do you intend to do?”
Kaito looked into his bowl. His goal? Survive? Get powerful? Build a harem of beautiful companions like in the stories? It sounded ridiculous to say out loud.
The System pinged.
[Primary Overarching Questline: ‘Ascend to Divinity’ has been generated!] [Current Chapter: ‘The Seed of Power’] [Objective:** Prove your worth by cleansing the ‘Mossfang Caverns’ of the corrupt creatures within. The dungeon is located one day’s travel east of here.

**Bonus Objective:** Complete the dungeon with Lyra’s Loyalty at ‘Trusted’.
**Bonus Reward:** ‘Harem Roster’ Function Unlocked.]
A dungeon. A real, honest-to-god dungeon crawl. A thrill of excitement and fear shot through him. This was it. This was the classic isekai adventure.
He looked up, meeting Lyra’s gaze. “My goal is to get stronger. To understand this power I have. And I’ve just learned that the first step to doing that is east of here. There’s a place called Mossfang Caverns. It’s… calling to me. It’s overrun with monsters, and I feel compelled to clear it out.”
Lyra’s eyebrows rose. “Mossfang Caverns? That is no place for a novice. Foul, twisted creatures dwell there, corrupted by a lingering dark magic. Goblins, giant venomous spiders… perhaps worse.”
“I know it’s dangerous,” Kaito said, his voice firm. “But I have to go. Will you… will you come with me?”
He held his breath. This was the real test.
Lyra was silent, swirling the water in her cup. “A fool’s errand,” she stated flatly. Then she sighed. “But the pull I feel towards you is strongest when you speak of this. It resonates with purpose. Very well. I will accompany you to these caverns. My bow will give you a fighting chance. But know this, human—if you prove to be merely a fool rushing to his death, I will not die with you. I will leave you to your fate.”
[Lyra’s Loyalty has increased to ‘Cautiously Optimistic’.] [New Quest Accepted: ‘The Seed of Power’!]
It was the best he could have hoped for.
The next day, they set out at dawn. The journey was spent with Lyra giving him a crash course in this new world—Eldoria, its kingdoms, the basics of magic (which he, with his Intelligence 9, grasped frighteningly quickly), and the types of monsters they might face.
As they walked, Kaito practiced with the System.
“System, can I learn skills?”
[Skills can be acquired in three ways:**
**1. Training: Practicing a skill repeatedly may unlock it.**
**2. Instruction: Being taught by a skilled individual may unlock it.**
**3. Skill Books: Consuming a Skill Book grants immediate proficiency.]
“Show me my available quests.”
[Current Active Quests:**
**- The Seed of Power (Primary)**
**- Forge a True Bond (Companion)**
**- Daily Quest: ‘Physical Conditioning’ – Jog for 1 hour. Reward: 10 EXP, +0.1 to Strength or Agility.]
He immediately started jogging in place beside a bemused Lyra until the System pinged its completion. The +0.1 to Agility was miniscule, but it was free stats.
By the time the jagged entrance of Mossfang Caverns yawned before them like a dark mouth, hidden within a misty grove, Kaito felt more prepared. He was Level 1, slightly less of a zero, and had a gorgeous elven archer at his side.
The air grew cold and damp. The cheerful sounds of the forest died away, replaced by an eerie dripping and a faint, chittering noise from the darkness within.
Lyra nocked an arrow to her bowstring, her expression grim. “This is it. The corruption is strong here. Stay behind me, and do exactly as I say.”
Kaito drew his shortsword, its weight unfamiliar in his hand. His heart hammered, but it was not just fear. It was anticipation.
“Ready?” Lyra whispered.
[Dungeon Instance: Mossfang Caverns entered.] [Objective: Clear the caverns of all hostile entities.]
Kaito took a deep breath. “Ready.”
Together, they stepped into the darkness. The System’s glow was the only light guiding them forward, illuminating the first steps of his reckoning. Somewhere in the deep, something scuttled in the shadows, hungry and waiting. The first test had begun.
