Secret Between Them

848 Words
The rainstorm had passed, leaving Willow Creek washed clean beneath a bright blue sky. Emma stood outside the bookstore, arranging a display of discounted novels on a small table near the entrance. Business had been better over the past week, and for the first time in months, she felt optimistic. Not that she would admit one of the reasons for her improved mood. That reason had dark hair, blue eyes, and an annoying habit of making her smile. As if summoned by her thoughts, Adam Blake appeared at the end of the street. Emma immediately looked away. Unfortunately, her smile appeared before she could stop it. Aiden noticed. And his own smile followed. "Good morning." "You're late." He raised an eyebrow. "We had a schedule?" "You've shown up every morning this week." "Fair point." Emma laughed. The sound made his chest tighten pleasantly. It was becoming a problem. The more time he spent with Emma, the harder it became to remember why he had come to Willow Creek in the first place. He had wanted a fresh start. A break from his complicated life. Instead, he had found someone who made him want to stay. Someone who made the truth harder to hide. Before either could continue the conversation, a black luxury SUV turned onto Main Street. Aiden froze. His heart immediately sank. There was no mistaking that vehicle. He knew exactly who had arrived. The SUV pulled to the curb. The driver's door opened. Marcus Reed stepped out. Emma noticed the sudden tension in Aiden's posture. "You okay?" Aiden forced a smile. "Yeah." But he wasn't. Not even close. Marcus walked toward them wearing a dark suit that looked completely out of place in the small coastal town. Emma glanced between the two men. "You know him?" Aiden sighed. "Unfortunately." Marcus stopped in front of them. "Aren't you going to answer your phone?" "Good morning to you too." Marcus ignored the comment. "We need to talk." Emma sensed immediately that something was wrong. "I can give you some privacy." "No," Aiden said quickly. Then he realized how desperate he sounded. Emma looked surprised. Marcus looked amused. Aiden cleared his throat. "What do you need?" Marcus lowered his voice. "The board meeting is next week." "I know." "Investors are asking questions." "I know." "You've been gone for almost a month." "I know." Marcus crossed his arms. "Then maybe you should start acting like it." Emma watched the exchange carefully. The conversation sounded unusually serious for two ordinary friends. Aiden noticed her expression. Dangerous territory. Very dangerous. He couldn't let Marcus reveal anything. Not here. Not now. "Let's take a walk," Aiden said firmly. Marcus immediately understood. "Fine." Aiden turned toward Emma. "I'll be back later." She nodded. "Take your time." For some reason, disappointment flickered in her eyes. Aiden hated seeing it. As he followed Marcus down the street, he felt Emma's gaze on his back. The feeling remained long after they disappeared around the corner. "What are you doing?" Marcus asked the moment they were alone. Aiden sighed. "Living." "You're hiding." "I'm taking a break." Marcus laughed. "A month ago, you were running a billion-dollar company." "And now?" "Now you're drinking coffee and flirting with a bookstore owner." Aiden stopped walking. Marcus immediately regretted the comment. Because Aiden didn't deny it. Instead, he looked away. That alone answered the question. "Oh no," Marcus muttered. "What?" "You actually like her." Aiden remained silent. Marcus groaned. "This is bad." "Why?" "Because eventually you're going to tell her who you are." The words landed heavily. Because Marcus was right. Eventually, the truth would come out. And when it did, Emma would learn that every conversation, every coffee, every moment between them had been built on a lie. Not a malicious lie. But a lie nonetheless. For the first time, Aiden wondered if he was being selfish. Emma deserved honesty. Yet he wasn't ready to risk losing her. Not yet. Later that afternoon, Aiden returned to the bookstore. Emma was shelving books when she saw him enter. "Everything okay?" He smiled. "Yeah." The answer came too quickly. Emma noticed. And for the first time since meeting him, she felt a small seed of doubt. Adam Blake was kind. Funny. Thoughtful. But there were moments when he seemed to carry the weight of an entire world on his shoulders. Moments when his answers felt carefully chosen. Moments when he looked like a man hiding something. She didn't know what it was. And honestly, it wasn't her business. Yet curiosity tugged at her. Aiden approached the counter. "I'm sorry about earlier." "You don't have to apologize." "Still." Emma studied him. "You know, you're mysterious." Aiden laughed nervously. "Is that a compliment?" "I haven't decided." Their eyes met. For a second, neither spoke. Then Emma smiled. And just like that, the tension disappeared. But neither realized that secrets had a way of surfacing. No matter how deeply they were buried. And the closer Aiden and Emma became, the closer they moved toward a truth that could either bring them together forever... Or destroy everything.
