CHAPTER 6: BETWEEN WORDS AND GLANCES

727 Words
The first bell rang, echoing through the hallways like a familiar rhythm. I tucked my notebook under my arm, trying to act casual, but my heart was anything but steady. Every step toward the classroom felt heavier, as if gravity had suddenly learned about him too. He was already there, leaning against the windowsill, sketchbook in hand, eyes scanning the students who filtered in. The sunlight caught the edges of his hair, making it look almost golden. My chest tightened, and I reminded myself to breathe. During the lecture, I tried to focus on the notes the teacher was dictating, but my mind wandered endlessly. How many times had our hands brushed in the past few days? How many glances lingered just a little too long? I felt my fingers twitch, remembering the warmth of his hand against mine on the rooftop yesterday. Beside me, my friend nudged me, whispering, “Stop staring at him, you’re going red.” I blinked rapidly and muttered, “I’m… not.” But my cheeks were already burning. Lunch came too soon. The group gathered under the familiar oak tree, sandwiches and drinks in hand. The new girl from school was there again, laughing near him. I swallowed hard, trying to keep the lump of jealousy at bay. “Are you okay?” he asked suddenly, sitting beside me. I blinked, startled. “Uh… yeah. I’m fine.” He tilted his head, studying me. “You don’t seem fine.” I shook my head quickly, forcing a laugh. “I’m just… hungry.” He smirked knowingly, and I felt a flutter in my stomach I couldn’t explain. After lunch, a few of us wandered toward the school garden. The flowers swayed gently in the breeze, the soft hum of bees creating a quiet background. He walked beside me, close enough that I could feel his shoulder brush mine occasionally. “Do you remember the dares we used to do here?” he asked, glancing at me. I laughed softly. “Yeah… you always managed to scare me into doing them anyway.” He grinned. “I didn’t scare you. I was… encouraging.” I frowned playfully. “Encouraging or manipulating?” He laughed, and my heart did a little flip. We paused near the fountain, watching the water sparkle. He picked up a small stone and tossed it in with a flick of his wrist. “Sometimes, I wonder… if we were brave enough, would things have been different?” I stared at him, unsure what he meant. “Different how?” He shrugged. “You know… us. Everything.” The silence between us grew heavy, but not uncomfortable. It was the kind of silence that made my heart ache and race at the same time. Later, we joined a quiet study session in the library. The scent of old books and the hush of pages turning wrapped around us like a cocoon. I focused on my notes, but I couldn’t help glancing at him, watching the subtle movements of his hand as he doodled. “Hey,” he whispered, leaning slightly toward me. “Do you… think we’ve changed?” I paused, my pen hovering over the page. “I don’t know… maybe. But… some things haven’t.” He smiled softly, and my chest fluttered. “Like what?” I looked down, trying to hide my racing heart. “Like… friendship.” “Or more,” he murmured, eyes catching mine. The final bell rang, and some classmates suggested going to the rooftop to watch the sunset. I followed, my stomach a knot of nerves and anticipation. The sky was painted in streaks of pink and gold. He stood beside me, the wind teasing his hair. “It’s beautiful,” he murmured. I nodded, trying to focus on the colors, not the way my heart seemed to beat just for him. He glanced at me, and I could see something unspoken flicker in his eyes. I wanted to speak, to say everything, but my voice stuck in my throat. Finally, he reached over, brushing his hand against mine. “Hey… it’s just us,” he said softly. I let a small smile escape, feeling warmth spread through me. Yet, even in this fragile moment, I knew the real words, the real feelings, were still waiting somewhere between our hearts, unsaid.
