Chapter 40

1055 Words
"I am Bryce Kingsley, the representative of the Apex Group for the negotiations and bidding of the Roberts family's project. Listen carefully, anyone who brings gifts will not be considered for cooperation with the Apex Group. Those who didn't bring any gifts, please step forward," Bryce announced loudly. In an instant, everyone at the door, except for Jonathan and Olivia, was stunned. They never expected that because of their meticulously prepared gifts, they would be denied entry and cooperation right at the entrance. "What? Did we come all this way for nothing?" "Mr. Kingsley, please, we need to see Colonel Wellington. We are from the Horizon Group. We had an appointment." "I'm the heir of the Moore family. My father contacted you before. I need to see Colonel Wellington." Watching the commotion, Mark panicked. His family was quite wealthy, and he had brought a lot of gifts. Maybe he would be the first to be excluded. But before he could make a move, the ones at the front demanding to see Elliott were struck down by four soldiers with their rifle butts. They were knocked out on the spot. "Do you think you deserve to see Colonel Wellington? Colonel Wellington despises those who rely on connections. What's the point of such bidding and cooperation? Anyone who causes trouble will be detained and sent to the police station!" Bryce coldly snorted and shouted at the crowd. At these words, the crowd fell silent. They knew that they couldn't offend the Yonderville military. Sophia's face was grim. She clutched Mark's arm and stomped her foot in panic. "Mark, what do we do now? Without this cooperation, we'll lose millions." Mark wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, nervously stepped forward, and handed out his business card. He smiled obsequiously, "Hello, Mr. Kingsley. I'm Mark Newton, the heir of the Newton Group. My father, Quentin Newton, knows Colonel Wellington. Could you let me in to see Colonel Wellington?" "Yes, my boyfriend is the heir of the Newton Group," Sophia added. However, Bryce glanced coldly at Mark's business card, tore it up, and said sternly, "What do you take Colonel Wellington for? Colonel Wellington values integrity, fairness, and justice above all. I just said he doesn't like people who rely on connections. And now you ask me if I can let you in? Are you ignoring me? Guards, detain him." "What? No, I didn't!" Mark panicked. In an instant, he was kicked away by a soldier, pressed hard to the ground, and handcuffed. "Please have mercy! I was wrong. I won't give gifts or take shortcuts again. Please let me go!" Mark was almost in tears. He begged constantly for mercy on the ground. Sophia was scared. She stood trembling, not knowing what to do. Bryce continued, "Those who didn't bring gifts, come forward." Jonathan patted the stunned Olivia and said, "You go." "What? Me? I'm a bit scared." Olivia still didn't understand what was happening. But with Jonathan's encouragement, she mustered the courage to step forward, still looking very nervous. In an instant, she became the focus of the entire scene because she was the only one who didn't bring gifts. Those who had brought gifts remembered what Jonathan had said earlier, but they didn't think Jonathan was smart. Instead, they resented Jonathan and Olivia deeply. "What's your name?" Bryce asked with a smile. He had received orders from Elliott earlier and spotted Jonathan from afar. "Olivia Harrison," Olivia replied weakly, trembling all over. "Olivia Harrison? Which company are you from?" Bryce pressed further. Olivia was at a loss. She didn't have a company. She didn't even know what to do after winning the project. How would she negotiate? She quickly turned to Jonathan for help. But before Jonathan could speak, Chad and Sally raised their hands and rushed over excitedly. Sally loudly proclaimed, "She's from the Harrison Group. She's my daughter." "Yes, she's my sister. I'm Chad Harrison. Here's my business card," Chad added with an obsequious smile and quickly handed over his business card. Sally and Chad were completely unaware of how shameless they were. Instead, they felt thrilled inside. They didn't expect that Elliott would reject gifts, turn down those families and enterprises that sent gifts, and choose the only one who didn't bring a gift, Olivia. This was an opportunity for Chad. And it was also their chance to climb higher in the Harrison family. Jonathan frowned and snorted coldly, "Is she your daughter? Your sister? That's not what I heard yesterday." "Jonathan, this is none of your business. Shut up!" Sally frowned and cursed. She didn't want Jonathan to ruin their plan. "Jonathan, you haven't secured the project, and Grandpa hasn't acknowledged you yet. You have no right to meddle in the Harrison family's affairs," Chad retorted furiously. Bryce frowned in confusion. Yesterday, Elliott asked him to assign the project to Olivia. Who were these two people? "Ms. Harrison, are you sure you belong to the Harrison Group? Are they your mother and brother?" he asked. He couldn't help but glance at Jonathan in the distance. Olivia hesitated and stammered, "I..." "Olivia, I'm your mother, and he's your brother. You belong to the Harrison family!" Sally said coldly. She was afraid Olivia would say the wrong thing. Though she was just Olivia's stepmother, she was ready to do everything to connect with Olivia at that moment. Chad glared at Olivia fiercely. "Olivia, think before you speak. Or you won't be allowed back home." They were still threatening Olivia. "Jagger, come here and say something. Isn’t she your daughter?" Sally, seeing Olivia hesitate, immediately pulled Jagger over. Jagger could only say, "Olivia, Dad's here." Olivia was emotionally agitated. She never expected Jagger to suddenly acknowledge her as his daughter. Even Sally and Chad were eager to claim her. She had waited five years, and now it was about to come true. Jonathan naturally couldn't allow this to happen. He suddenly said to Olivia, "Olivia, think about how they treated you before. Now they want to use you to secure cooperation with the Apex Group. I'm afraid they'll discard you once they get the project." Olivia trembled and looked at Jonathan with red eyes. "But they are my family. Jonathan, I've waited five years. I really want to go home. Will they really deceive me?"
