Chapter 47

Mark basked in the attention of the crowd, took a sip of his wine, and began, "Tomorrow night, there will be a special banquet at the government reception hall in Yonderville. It's an event for all the families and companies partnering with the Apex Group. I heard a dignitary would show up. The elite class of Yonderville is talking about it." "What? A banquet hosted by the Yonderville military with a dignitary? Who could it be?" "Mr. Newton, please tell us. Who is this dignitary?" "It's said to be the newly-promoted five-star general, who commands the Navy Secret Special Forces and thousands of elite soldiers. I'd only ever read about him in the newspapers. I never imagined he'd come to Yonderville." Mark inhaled deeply, his face full of pride and satisfaction. He felt it was a great honor just to know this news. Upon hearing that, everyone was stunned, and their eyes widened in shock. Even Samuel, who was in his seventies, was filled with astonishment and admiration. The twenty-five year old five-star general was the epitome of achievement in Novaria and a hero in everyone's eyes. He could never be surpassed; he could only be revered. "The five-star general is one of the highest-ranking figures in the Novaria military. Is he coming to Yonderville?" The array of reactions from the Harrison family filled Mark with unparalleled pride. After all, the news he possessed was beyond their reach. He boasted with even greater confidence, "My family has some connections with this five-star general. When my father and I were in Havencrest, D.N. (District of Novaria), capital of Novaria, we had dinner with him once." "My goodness! Mr. Newton, you've dined with a five-star general!" "Incredible!" "Mr. Newton, here's to you!" No one in the Harrison family questioned the truth of Mark's words. They were all in awe of him and toasted endlessly. Samuel's face lit up. Mark would soon become his grandson-in-law, and it would give the Harrison family a significant boost towards becoming a top-tier family. However, Jagger's family looked grim. Compared to Mark, Jonathan, who was holding Ruby, seemed so mediocre. They had once thought Olivia had landed on a wealthy man, but it was all a lie. Jonathan was merely a squatter in a friend's villa. "All you do is eat, you glutton. Why don't you just eat yourself to death?" Sally insulted Jonathan. Olivia bowed her head in shame, but she believed Jonathan wouldn't stay like this forever. He had more potential than anyone realized. Jonathan initially didn't plan to respond, but seeing Olivia's distress, he couldn't help but retort, "When did I have dinner with you in Havencrest? I don't remember that." The hall fell silent. Everyone's admiring whispers stopped abruptly, and all eyes were on Jonathan. "What do you mean by that?" Mark glared at Jonathan. He hadn't taught Jonathan a lesson for their last confrontation, and now Jonathan tried to steal his thunder. Did he really think he was a five-star general or something? The Harrison family members shouted in anger, "Jonathan! Who do you think you are? You don't get to speak here!" "Apologize to Mr. Newton right now. He knows the five-star general. If he gets mad, we could suffer." "Such a fool! Olivia, why did you have to bring him back?" Sophia lashed out, "Jonathan, what do you think you're doing? Look at yourself. You’re just a retired bum kicked out by the military. Do you think you could ever get close to a five-star general?" Declan and Maeve interjected, "Jagger, he's unreliable. If he becomes your son-in-law, the disaster from five years ago will repeat itself. If the Stewart family finds out, we'll be in big trouble." "Jagger, you'd better find a way to get rid of this jinx." Jagger felt both embarrassed and angry. He didn't believe Jonathan was a five-star general either. All he could do was smile and nod. "You're right. He's just a worthless liar." Then he glared at Jonathan, his eyes blazing with fury. He still remembered what happened five years ago. Olivia was once the belle of Yonderville, but she was defiled by this loser and gave birth to that little bastard. Olivia hated seeing Jonathan humiliated and cursed, but she couldn't defend him directly. She discreetly squeezed his hand under the table to signal her unwavering support and whispered, "Jonathan, please don't say anything more. This is the Harrison Villa. Let's just eat quietly, okay?" Jonathan glanced at Olivia and nodded. However, Mark wasn't about to let it slide. Being interrupted by Jonathan was an insult. He shouted, "Wait! What do you mean by that? Are you saying you're a five-star general?" Jonathan frowned but, seeing Olivia's pleading eyes, he remained silent. "Haha, how ridiculous!" Mark burst into laughter and then slammed his wine glass on the table. "You loser, how dare you impersonate a five-star general? If the military finds out, you'll lose your head, and the Harrison family will be wiped out." Hearing this, the Harrison family shuddered and breathed deeply. Their hatred for Jonathan grew. "Mr. Newton, this has nothing to do with us. It's all Jonathan's fault!" "Yes, blame that i***t!" Samuel forced a laugh, "Mr. Newton, please don't take it personally. That bum knows nothing." Satisfied with their support, Mark calmed down. He reached into his pocket, pulled out five invitation cards, and slapped them on the table. "These are for tomorrow night's banquet. Without my military connections, none of you would even get a glimpse of them! Doesn't this prove my connection with the five-star general?"
