The Newton family had spent a significant amount to secure an opportunity to cooperate with the Apex Group, and in the process, they obtained a few invitation cards. Originally, there were only two, but Mark shelled out an additional 300,000 dollars to buy three more.
When the Harrison family members saw the five invitation cards, their eyes lit up with excitement.
These were invitations to the special banquet in Yonderville, and countless big shots would attend it. Moreover, it was personally hosted by Colonel Elliott Wellington. Just these facts were enough to drive countless people crazy. What's more, tomorrow night, a five-star general would be attending in person. This banquet had already surpassed a mere social event, and the invitation cards had become symbols of power and prestige in the upper class of Yonderville.
Many people would do anything to catch a glimpse of the five-star general. After all, this was classified information in Novaria. Besides the news reports about the existence of such a general, no one knew what he looked like.
Actually, Jonathan, the five-star general they admired so much, was sitting right behind them at the small table.
However, Jonathan remained silent. He found an inexplicable sense of calm in the warm touch of Olivia's hand.
"Mr. Newton, these invitation cards..." Samuel's eyes brightened considerably when he saw the cards.
Mark smiled and said, "Mr. Samuel Harrison, this is for you."
He handed one of the invitation cards to Samuel.
Samuel received it with both hands, his face flushed with excitement. "Really? This is wonderful. Thank you, Mr. Newton."
Mark waved it off casually. "Don't mention it. I'm going to marry Sophia soon, so we'll be family."
Hearing this, Samuel was overjoyed. "Yes, we're family. Mr. Newton, let's sit and have a few drinks."
Mark nodded and followed Samuel to the most prominent seat in the hall. The Harrison family members stared at the four remaining cards eagerly.
"Mr. Newton, is there one for me?" Sophia practically threw herself into Mark's arms. She pressed her chest against his arm, her neckline pulled low to reveal an enticing view. Mark blushed and felt quite tempted.
"Of course, darling." Mark handed a card to Sophia. She took it happily and flaunted it in front of Olivia as if saying, "Jonathan is no match for Mark. He's just a liar and a loser."
Then, Mark took out two more cards and handed them to Declan and Maeve. "And these are for you."
"Wow, really? Thank you. You're too kind." Maeve quickly took the cards, her face glowing with pride and arrogance. Declan, keeping his composure, smiled and toasted with Mark.
Now, there was only one card naturally reserved for Mark himself left.
The other Harrison family members watched with envy.
Maeve, with a smug and proud look, deliberately taunted Sally, "Oh, I'm sorry, but we'll be attending the banquet tomorrow night. Life is so unpredictable. Guess it's all in God's hands. Lucky me to have such a capable future son-in-law, unlike some losers who can't do anything but spin tales."
"Come on. It's just a banquet. It means nothing to me," Sally snapped, gritting her teeth.
She then turned angrily to Jonathan and scolded, "It's all your fault, you loser. Mr. Newton got invitation cards to the banquet. And you? All you do is eat!"
Jonathan frowned, glanced at the flaunting family, and casually said, "It's just a few invitation cards. I can get as many as you want with one phone call. If you want, I can have a box of them delivered right now."
The hall fell silent.
Everyone looked at Jonathan with disbelief and then burst into laughter.
"What did he say? He can get a box of invitation cards?"
"Jonathan, are you kidding me? Do you know how stupid you sound right now?"
"How did Olivia bring back such a braggart?"
Maeve sneered, "Oh my, did I hear that right? Sally, your amazing son-in-law said he can get a box of invitation cards with one phone call. How about you ask him to make the call right now? We're so looking forward to it."
Maeve almost laughed herself breathless. Jonathan was such an i***t. How could he always lie?
Sophia held her stomach, laughing. "Jonathan, you're shameless. Do you know how stupid you sound? Only a fool would think they can casually connect with a five-star general."
She then looked disdainfully at Olivia, "Olivia, your husband is an i***t! Hahaha!"
Samuel, concerned that this might embarrass Mark, said sternly, "Enough! If you can get a box of invitation cards, I'll immediately acknowledge you as my grandson-in-law."
Mark kept chuckling in disdain. He took a sip of his wine and said sarcastically, "People really should know their place. Here you are, with absolutely nothing to your name, yet you still put on airs as if you're someone important."
Facing the mockery and humiliation from everyone, Olivia lowered her head. Tears welled up in her eyes. She slowly pulled her hand away from Jonathan's and sobbed, "Jonathan, please stop. It's too embarrassing."
