Old Enemies

992 Words
After Cynthia leaves, Ms.Slyard dismisses Alice and brings me into her office. I'm going to get an earful for this, I already know it. "I don't know what happened between you and Cynthia, but I suggest you make amends as quickly as possible. She is going to be our new luna soon, and you don't want to keep her as an enemy." She says, but one part keeps replaying in my mind. New luna, she is going to be my new luna. I'm dead or worse. She is going to torture me just like Eric and Scarlett did. I can not go back to the dungeons. I have to plan my escape. I go back to my room and wash up for dinner. I report back to Ms.Slyard at 5 pm sharp with the rest of the staff. Alice and I will be assisting with after dinner duties so we get to eat while dinner is being served upstairs. When we sit down, everyone else starts whispering about me. "She tried to kill her nephew. Stabbed her own sister in the stomach, barely missed."She is already on Cynthia's s**t list." "Causing trouble on her first day. That's not a suprise." "She thinks we are beneath her." I tune them out and focus on my soup. They don't even know me. Not this me. I thought I could start over, how stupid I was. This is what I deserve. I put on a mask of indifference, and luckily, by the time I finish, it is time to clean up the upstairs. Alice shows me to the servants' stairs, and we walk into the pack kitchen where we are to wash up the dishes. Some of the plates are only half eaten, and it makes me so mad. How could they waste so much food? But then I remember that I used to be like Cynthia, sticking my nose up if it wasn't absolutely perfect. Causing so much grief for our servants. I really did think I was above them. Isn't life ironic? I start scraping food into the trash while Alice begins the washing. When I know she isn't looking, I grab a piece of half eaten prime rib and shove it greedily into my mouth. I almost moan at the flavor. How could I have taken so much for granted? I finish scraping the plates and start drying the dishes for her. I'm in my own thoughts when I realize Alice said something I didn't catch. "Lillian, you need to be more careful. If they caught you eating that, you won't have any food for a week, maybe longer with you and Cynthia's...umm, history." "I'm sorry, I just hate to see so much wasted. I won't do it again." As we are finishing up, Cynthia slides into the kitchen and stops right in front of me. "Do you think you can just come here and work and not repay your debt to me? I'm having you moved to be my personal maid." She says as she grabs a plate and smashes it on the ground. "Clean that up." She barks. I hurry to grab a broom and dust pan, keeping my head down the whole time. She watches, clearly amused. " We are going to have a lot of fun, you and I." She motions for Alice to leave. I lean my head down, signaling that I will be okay. Alice hurries out and away from Cynthia's rage. "If you think you can come here and steal my man like you did your sister, then you have another thing coming." She says before smashing several more plates to the ground. I hurry and clean them up as quickly as I can, not daring to look up. After I dump them in the trash can, she yanks me back by my hair, and it takes all my willpower not to throw her to the ground. I'm much stronger than her, and she is belittling me like I'm some omega. I promised not to cause problems or get into trouble, but trouble ran right up to me. Beta Carson burst into the room as I finished up sweeping up the dishes. " This girl is a clumsy and bad servant. She broke several of the dishes I just had imported. I expect her to pay with her wages." And with that, Cynthia stomps out of the room. Beta Carson looks confused, but then his confusion turns to anger. " It's your first day here, and you are already causing problems. Keep this up, and you will return to a dungeon much like the one you were taken out of. Do not mistake me for a pushover of a man." I speak up and say, "Sir, I am so sorry, I got really nervous when Cynthia came in, and I dropped several dishes. I will not let it happen again. Please feel free to take my wages until the China I broke is replaced." He stands there for a minute, trying to decide if he should believe me. It's better to take the fall. He would never believe that she set me up, and I know because I have pulled this same stunt to countless people. He decides I'm telling the truth, and in a softer tone, he says, "It's OK, it's your first day, I understand you are nervous, but don't let it happen again. Head down and get some rest. " With that, I race down to the servants' quarters and into my room. I take deep breaths until I am finally calm. "You handled that pretty well for a useless human." Sierra says in the back of my mind. She's back! Oh, how I missed my borderline abusive wolf. "Sierra? I thought I had lost you." I say out loud. " A strong wolf like me? Never. I'm much too strong for something as simple as wolfsbane to kill me." She purrs.
