Chapter 5Family Feast

864 Words
The party went on very late and everyone went home separately. Lilith went straight to bed when she got home. Lilith didn't know how long she had slept. It was with great difficulty that she got up. Her mind was blank and her body felt weak as if her soul had been drained away. She didn't even remember how she had come back last night. Checking her phone, it was already 10 a.m. Lilith went to the kitchen and grabbed some bread and milk at random. After having something to eat, she felt much more energetic. Just as Lilith was lost in thought, a ringtone from her phone interrupted her. Lilith picked up the phone. It was Grandpa John calling to invite her to dinner at his home that night. Lilith knew that it might be about the matter of having Jack marry her. Before going to Grandpa John's house, Lilith specially went to choose a gift for Grandpa John. She is a grateful person. We have been kind to her for so many years, and she has shown us great respect in return. What she didn't expect was that Jack was there too. Jack was sitting on the sofa. He wore a black shirt today, with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His complexion was naturally pale and cool, which contrasted sharply with the black, accentuating a lazy and ascetic look. He wore a small black rubber band on his right wrist, with a little rabbit charm hanging from it. That tiny rabbit hair elastic looks extremely out of place and even a bit comical with his ascetic outfit. Lilith raised her eyebrows slightly and drew her gaze back. She remembers there was a saying online that to tell if a guy is single, just check if he has a small rubber band on his hand. "Chairman, did you call me for something?" Lilith glanced at her phone. "I've already prepared the contract and sent it to your email. As for the specific details, I'll submit the materials to your secretary on Monday." Grandpa John waved his hand. "Let's not talk about that. Today is a family dinner. No business talk. Here, don't call me Chairman. Call me Grandpa John. Lily, come on, sit down." He always had a kind look when he was with Lily. Lilith found a seat and sat down. She felt that something bad was going to happen. Lilith looked at Jack. Jack also put down his chopsticks and looked at Lilith. Grandpa John is over fifty, but the imposing air of a chairman for many years still remains. The current scale of the Green Group is all due to his painstaking efforts. He glanced at Jack. "Don't think I don't know about your dirty deeds." Jack leaned back in his chair. "What's wrong with me?" Did you go to Milan last week? "Yes." Jack nodded. "My going to Milan didn't cause any trouble to anyone, did it?" It takes over ten hours for a one-way flight from Ville to Milan. Jack really made an effort to see Amy. "Didn't bother anyone? You're already engaged to Lilith, yet you still went to see that Amy." Grandpa John looked at Jack with some anger and said, "I've told you, Jack. As long as I'm alive, I won't allow Amy to step into our home. You'd better give up that idea!" Besides, you've been engaged to Lilith for so long. When are you going to get married? Then I'll be at ease. Lilith lowered her eyes and remained silent. Such a situation would occur once or twice every year, and the outcome was always an unhappy parting. Whether she spoke or not, she was bound to be blamed by Jack. At first, she would still follow up and try to persuade Grandpa John, but after being told several times by Jack that it was insincere, she stopped speaking up. In Jack's eyes, Lilith's appearance was a sin anyway. "Why? I don't agree. I won't marry her." Jack threw this sentence and got up to leave. Looking at his back, he angrily slapped the table, "You, get out! You'll regret it sooner or later!" Jack could leave without hesitation, but Lilith couldn't. She had to stay and face Grandpa John's rage. "Jack being a jerk is one thing, but how come you don't have the slightest clue? That night, things were so intense, how could he still be thinking of Amy?" "Do you still remember how you promised me back then!" Grandpa John was so angry that he scolded a lot, but Lillith's attention was all drawn to one sentence. She asked in disbelief, "You mean that night, in that wine... you put the drug?" Grandpa John snorted, "Do you think anyone's so bold as to try anything on me?" Lilith suppressed the terror in her heart. Her respected grandfather had actually drugged her... She took a breath, "…Why did you do this? Why?" Grandpa John's sharp gaze swept over her. The warmth and kindness at the dinner table vanished, replaced by estrangement and scrutiny. With a cold expression, he said, "I hope you won't disappoint me again. Otherwise, it's over!"
