This dinner was so long. Every second that Lilith sat there, she was on tenterhooks. Fortunately, the old man didn't bring up the topic of marriage again.
When she came out, Lilith hesitated for a moment. She definitely needed to talk to Jack. Then she drove directly to Jack's apartment.
She rang the doorbell. A moment later, she heard a woman's voice. To her surprise, it was Amy who opened the door.
"Is that you?" Amy's smile had been on her face, but it slowly faded when she saw it was Lilith.
She leaned against the doorframe, clearly not planning to let Lilith in. "Miss Lilith, often knocking on a single man's door so late? What do you want?"
Lilith felt a bit embarrassed. "Sorry, I'm disturbing you. I'm sorry." Lilith was about to turn and leave, but Amy wasn't going to let her go so easily.
"Lilith, the chairman called you two over tonight to talk about your marriage, right?" Amy ignored her apology, looked down at her nails, and then looked up at her with a half-smile. "I guess Jack refused again. You know, although you're engaged, he only loves me. He won't marry you."
Lilith looked at her in silence. She and Amy were actually classmates, both graduated from Verl University.
In the past, when they were at school, Amy and Lilith were good friends.
Once, during those innocent student days, Amy and Lilith were like two stars that leaned on each other, shining with each other's light. They were inseparable, whether in class, during breaks, or after school. You could always see them holding hands.
Back then, they were innocent and pure, their friendship was beautiful and nothing could separate them.
But later, when the chairman arranged for Lilith and Jack to get engaged, they were no longer sisters but enemies.
Amy was beautiful and had a good figure. Years of dancing had made her habitually raise her head slightly, like an elegant and proud swan.
Now, the swan looked her up and down with a contemptuous and mocking gaze. She laughed lightly, "These three years, how many times have you asked Jack to marry you? Hasn't he always refused you outright?"
"Lilith, don't you think you're a sl*t?"
Lilith said softly, "But Miss Amy, you don't even have the right to talk about marriage."
This was Amy's pain. She and Jack grew up together, childhood sweethearts. They should have been the most suitable couple to get married, but for some reason, Grandpa John wouldn't agree.
Even after she graduated from university, he offered to pay for her to study abroad.
But that wasn't to support her studies; it was clearly to force her to leave the country and be separated from Jack.
To leave Verl City and leave Jack!
The pride in Amy's eyes instantly vanished. Her gaze suddenly became sharp, and she shouted at Lilith, "You really are a sl*t! A shameless wh*r*!"
Before she could finish, footsteps were heard from inside. Amy turned her head and instantly regained a calm tone. "Dear, have you finished washing? Someone's looking for you."
Lilith looked up and saw Jack coming out of the room. He had just taken a bath, his hair still wet and sticking to his forehead. He was wearing a black T-shirt, looking more youthful than usual.
Jack approached, his eyes swept over Lilith quickly and then looked down at Amy, pulling her into the room. "Dear, go take a bath."
Lilith's eyelids quivered. Amy said to Lilith, "Sl*t."
Amy's face turned red from the words Lilith had just said.
Jack raised his eyes and asked, "What do you want? Is there something?"
"It's nothing important." Lilith said, nodding at them. "I'll go now."
Just as she turned around, the sound of the door closing was heard behind her. Lilith paused with her foot raised and turned to look back at the closed door.
Inside the room, Amy questioned Jack, "Jack, why is Lilith here to see you at this time?"
Jack only replied, "I don't know."
"Are you two up to something?" Amy's tone suddenly rose, "If you two have nothing going on, how could she come to see you at this time!"
"Jack, do you know how hard it was for me to fly back from Milan to Verdo? I only have two days off, and I spent over twenty hours on the plane just to see you!"
"I said there's nothing, no relationship at all," Jack loudly interrupted Amy.
Amy bit her lip and looked at him with red eyes: "Jack, I love you, you know that."
Jack was silent for a moment, but eventually softened his tone. He gently held Amy's cheeks and said tenderly, "I know, Amy. I love you too. Listen, go take a bath and get some rest. I'll take you to the airport tomorrow morning."
