Chapter Two – A Dangerous Line

1066 Words
************Maya's POV*********** I got home, tired and angry. The two brothers, Ethan and Adrian, had me so frustrated. How was I supposed to handle their war? A text from Adrian popped up on my phone. "I'm sorry, Elara. I'm sorry about the whole drama with Ethan." I read it but didn't answer. I just wanted a break from the Alden boys' war. I was trying to sleep when my friend, Maya, called. "Hey, are you home?" she asked. "Yeah," I said. "So, how was dinner with the Alden family?" "Ugh, Maya, you wouldn't believe it. It was a total mess. Adrian and Ethan's war never ends." "I really don't know what to do about this, Maya." "Let me ask you something," Maya said. "Who do you really want out of the two of them?" "I don't know, Maya, I'm so confused. I have to go, I'll talk to you tomorrow," I said. "Alright, goodnight." Sleep didn't come easy. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Ethan’s smirk, Adrian’s tight fists, and the way they both looked at me like I was a prize to be won. It wasn't supposed to be like this. I had just gone to dinner. I didn’t think I'd get stuck in the middle of a war that had been going on long before I showed up. By morning, I almost told myself I was overreacting. Maybe I had made it all up in my head. But when I got to work at King's Enterprises, reality hit me hard. Ethan and Adrian were not done. The office was busy as usual. People walked past me with files and coffee. But as soon as I walked in, I heard whispers. People stared at me with curious eyes and gave each other little smirks. I didn't need to ask why. Ethan was waiting by the elevators, tall and sharp in his expensive suit. When he saw me, he smiled. It wasn't a friendly smile; it was one that meant trouble. "Good morning, Elara," he said in a smooth voice, as if nothing had happened last night. Before I could answer, Adrian came from the other hallway. His face was tight, his voice sharp. "Ethan, don't you have a meeting to get ready for?" Ethan's smirk got wider. "Don't you?" Their eyes locked. You could feel the unspoken words between them. People around us slowed down, watching and pretending not to. I hated the attention. My job was supposed to be simple and professional. But with both of them circling me like they were hungry, "normal" didn't exist anymore. By the middle of the day, the tension broke. I was in the conference room getting files ready when Ethan walked in. He didn't knock. His confidence filled the room. "You know," he said in a calm voice, leaning on the table, "you shouldn't waste your time with Adrian. He's... complicated." I looked at him sharply. "And you're not?" He laughed, not bothered by what I said. "At least with me, you know what you're getting. No fake smiles. No games." Before I could say anything, the door flew open. Adrian stomped in, his voice rough. "What are you doing here, Ethan?" Ethan tilted his head, still smiling. "Talking." "Stay away from her." Adrian’s voice was low and dangerous. "You don't tell me what to do, Adrian," Ethan shot back. "Let her speak for herself. She doesn't need you to protect her." The room went silent. My heart hammered in my chest as I looked between them. I suddenly understood something I hadn't before. This wasn't just a rivalry. This was real hate. And I was the line neither of them wanted the other to cross. "Ethan, get out of her office now!" Adrian yelled. "Oh, Adrian, the big boss. What are you going to do if I don't leave?" Ethan replied with a dark smile. "I think you're the one who needs to leave." I couldn't take it anymore. My heart was beating so fast. "Stop it, both of you!" I yelled. "Can't I get one peaceful moment? Why is it always a war?" "Please, I need to focus here, and I can only do that when you're both gone. Please, go back to your offices." Ethan left with a smile aimed at Adrian. "I'm sorry, Elara," Adrian said, trying to apologize. "Please, just go, Adrian. I want to be left alone." They had messed up my day again. The Trap That evening, as I was getting ready to leave, Ethan showed up again. This time, he wasn't playing games. His face was sharp and serious. "Elara," he said softly, "come with me tonight. Just one drink. Let me show you I'm not the monster he says I am." I froze. My mind was spinning. Before I could answer, Adrian appeared out of nowhere in the hallway. His voice was firm and cut through the air. "She's not going anywhere with you." Ethan's jaw tightened. His charm turned into something darker. "You don't get to decide that, Adrian. She does." Both men looked at me, waiting. My breath caught, and their stares felt heavy and suffocating. If I said yes to Ethan, I'd betray Adrian's trust. If I said no, Ethan would just try harder. For the first time, I wondered if any choice I made would not end in disaster. I swallowed hard and made myself speak. "I... I think I should just go home." Adrian let out a sigh of relief. But Ethan's face got hard. "Fine," Ethan said, his voice clipped. "But remember this, Elara—when you finally see Adrian for who he really is, don't say I didn't warn you." He walked past us. His cologne stayed in the air, and his words felt like poison inside me. I turned to Adrian, looking for him to make me feel better. But what I saw wasn't relief. It was fear. "Elara," he whispered, his hand touching mine. "Please, I just want to go home," I said, cutting him off. "Elara," he said again. "You don't understand. Ethan isn't just dangerous. He breaks everything he touches. And if you let him in..." His voice trailed off, and his jaw tightened. "...you might lose yourself." I froze. My heart was racing. Was Adrian protecting me, or was he hiding something? And more importantly... Who was the real danger—Ethan, or Adrian?
