Chapter Three – The Battleground Becomes My Home

1405 Words
*********Elara's POV******* I got home, and all I could think about was Ethan and Adrian. My mind was spinning. My night was filled with thoughts, and I barely slept. How could I stop their war? A message popped up on my phone. It was Adrian. "Tomorrow is the weekend. Why don't we hang out together?" Another one came from Ethan: "Hey, Elara. How are you holding up? How about we get a drink tomorrow, just me and you?" I need a break, I told myself, and switched off my phone. The next day, the morning light felt new and hopeful. I woke up with the simple plan of staying home and enjoying some quiet time. But the quiet didn't last long. My phone started to buzz. I checked it and saw four missed calls. All from Adrian and Ethan. I didn't call them back. I just put my phone down. I cleaned up my house, trying to keep my mind busy. After a quick breakfast, I just wanted to relax on the couch for a bit before Maya came over. Suddenly, I heard a knock on my door. "Oh, she's already here," I said to myself, surprised. I opened the door, but it wasn't Maya. It was Ethan. He stood there, looking perfect in a simple black t-shirt and jeans, a small, hopeful smile on his face. "Hey, Elara," he said. I froze in shock. "Hey, Ethan. What a surprise visit." "You weren't picking up, so I figured I'd just…" he started to explain, his voice trailing off. A voice from behind him interrupted. "What are you doing here, Ethan?" It was Adrian. He stood on my porch, looking just as good as Ethan, but with a hard, angry look in his eyes. He had on a dark blue shirt, which made his eyes look even more intense. "Ethan smiled and who are you to tell me where to be, Adrian?" "Not here!" I shouted. My heart hammered in my chest. "You both can't show up at my door fighting and arguing. I didn't ask either of you to come here." "Ethan, you better get the hell out of here and stop causing trouble," Adrian said, stepping closer to my door. "Who showed up making trouble?" Ethan shot back, standing his ground. "I was here first." "You both don't want to stop fighting, do you?" My voice was strained. I felt a wave of anger wash over me. I closed my door, leaving both of them on my porch, and leaned against it, breathing hard. Just then, I heard another knock. "Hey, Elara, open up, it's me, Maya." I opened the door and pulled her inside quickly, not wanting her to get caught in the middle. Ethan and Adrian were still waiting outside, looking at each other with daggers in their eyes. "Hey, Maya, you're welcome," I said, my voice shaky. "What is going on, Elara?" Maya asked, her eyes wide. "What do you think?" I said, sighing. "They both just showed up at my house, fighting and arguing. Can't I have just one small moment of peace? What did I do wrong?" Maya put her hand on my shoulder. "I understand, Elara. Just let them in." "What? No way," I said. "Look at them. They'll just turn my living room into a battlefield." "They're not going to leave," she said quietly, nodding towards the door. "It's better to deal with it now. Just lay down the rules." I took a deep breath. Maya was right. They weren't going anywhere. I slowly opened the door again. "You both can come in on one condition," I said, looking from Ethan to Adrian. "You have to promise me there will be no fighting and no arguing. Especially now that my friend is here." They both looked at me, then at each other. They said "promise" at the same time, but their voices were cold. It was the best I was going to get. I let them in, and they stood in my living room, two storms pretending to be calm. The peace lasted for about five minutes. Maya tried to break the ice. "So, how have you two been? It’s been a while." "We've been fine," Adrian said, his eyes on Ethan. "Just working a lot." "Yeah," Ethan added, his eyes also on Adrian. "Trying to keep the family business from falling apart." Adrian’s jaw tightened. "The business is just fine." "I wouldn't be too sure about that," Ethan said, giving him a fake smile. "Our father seems to think the numbers could be better." I saw Adrian clench his fists. "My numbers are exactly where they need to be." I stood up. "That's enough," I said. "You promised." They both looked at me, their faces still hard. The air in my living room was thick with their anger. Maya was just standing there, looking from one brother to the other, not knowing what to say. The silence was broken by the sound of a notification on Ethan’s phone. He looked at it, and his smile turned into a smirk. "Speaking of work, Adrian, you might want to check your phone." Adrian ignored him. "I'm not doing this." "Suit yourself," Ethan said with a shrug, putting his phone away. "But when our mother calls, don't say I didn't warn you." A few seconds later, Adrian’s phone rang. The name "Mom" showed up on the screen. He looked at it, then at Ethan, his face turning pale. He walked out of the room to take the call, but not before I saw the worry in his eyes. Ethan's grin grew wider. "Looks like someone is in trouble." I stared at him, angry. "What did you do?" He just laughed. "Nothing. Just gave Mom an update on some new projects. A few... changes. Nothing to worry about." But I knew it wasn't "nothing." Ethan had done something to get Adrian in trouble. He used his mother against him. I realized then that Ethan wasn't just a playful rival. He was a ruthless player who would use anyone and anything to win. A Cold Threat Adrian came back a few minutes later. His face was a mask of cold rage. He didn’t look at me or Maya. He just looked at Ethan, his eyes as cold as ice. "You're a disgrace," Adrian said, his voice low and tight. "You're welcome," Ethan replied, not even a bit sorry. Adrian walked right up to Ethan. Maya took a step back, looking scared. "You want to play games?" Adrian whispered. "Fine. But you're playing with fire. And you're going to get burned." I couldn't stand it anymore. "This is not what we agreed on!" I yelled. "Get out. Both of you. Get out of my house right now!" Adrian looked at me, and the anger on his face was replaced by a look of hurt and shock. Ethan just watched, a satisfied look on his face. "Elara," Adrian said, his voice soft. "I'm sorry. I just..." "No," I cut him off. "I'm done. I'm not a toy. I'm not a prize. This isn't a game, and you both need to stop treating me like I am." "Fine," Ethan said, picking up his keys. He walked to the door, a final, cold smile on his face. "But just remember what I said, Elara. When you figure out who the real monster is, I'll be waiting." He left, the door closing with a quiet click. The silence he left behind was heavy. Adrian stood in the middle of my living room, looking lost. "Elara, please. It's not what you think. I can explain." I shook my head. "Just go, Adrian. I don't want to hear it right now." He nodded, defeated. "I'll go. But I'll be back. I'll make you see what's really happening." He turned and left, closing the door behind him. Maya came up to me and hugged me. "Are you okay?" she asked softly. I leaned against her, exhausted. "I don't know, Maya. I don't know." Later that night, as I was getting ready for bed, I looked out my window. Across the street, in a car parked under a street lamp, I saw a familiar face. Adrian was still there, just sitting, watching my house. A sudden, chilling thought crossed my mind. Was he staying because he was protective, or was he watching me because he was obsessed? Was I trapped?
